Used Petrol vs Used CNG Cars in India: Running Costs and Trade-Offs

CNG can cost less per kilometre, but a used petrol car may be cheaper overall when annual mileage is low or a conversion is poorly documented. Calculate local fuel costs, payback, range, compliance and condition before buying.

There is no universal per-kilometre winner. For a used car in India, the cheaper choice depends on your city’s current pump prices, the exact car’s condition-adjusted fuel economy, annual distance, purchase-price gap, access to CNG, and the quality and legality of any conversion. Calculate fuel cost for the specific petrol and CNG cars you are considering, then add acquisition and inspection risks before deciding.

Use these two calculations:

  • Petrol cost per kilometre = local petrol price per litre ÷ realistic kilometres per litre.
  • CNG cost per kilometre = local CNG price per kilogram ÷ realistic kilometres per kilogram.

Multiply the difference by your expected annual kilometres. Compare that saving with the used-car price difference, conversion-related work, and any repairs identified during inspection. Petrol remains the simpler choice for buyers with limited annual running, uncertain CNG access, or a questionable retrofit. A sound, compliant CNG car can make financial sense for high-mileage use when refuelling is convenient and the purchase premium is recovered.

What “used CNG” means in this comparison

In India, a used CNG car may be either a manufacturer-built bi-fuel vehicle or a petrol car later fitted with an approved CNG kit. Do not treat those configurations as interchangeable. A factory-fitted car has a design, calibration and documentation specific to that model. A converted car retains its petrol system and is intended to run on either fuel, but the quality of the kit, installation, maintenance and registration record determine whether that particular example is a sensible purchase.

The official material used for this guide is India-specific. Fuel prices are not fixed national figures: the Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell (PPAC) says petrol prices are market-determined by public-sector oil marketing companies in line with international market prices and other conditions. Any comparison that does not state a city, pump price and date is only a formula, not a current cost claim.

Calculate the running cost for the exact cars

1. Fix the comparison before collecting numbers

  1. Identify the exact petrol car and the exact CNG car, including model year, engine, transmission, body style and whether the CNG system is factory-fitted or retrofitted.
  2. Use the same city and, where practical, the same fuel stations for the price check. Write down the pump price, unit (litre or kilogram), locality and date.
  3. Estimate economy from the car’s actual condition and your route. A used car’s result can differ substantially from a brochure figure because of traffic, air-conditioning use, tyre pressure, driving style, load and maintenance.
  4. Record the annual distance you genuinely expect to drive, separating commuting from occasional long trips.

2. Put the inputs in one table

Input Petrol car CNG car What to record
Fuel price Petrol price per litre CNG price per kilogram Local station, date and unit
Realistic economy Observed km/l for this car Observed km/kg for this car Trip-log result or a clearly labelled owner report; do not present a brochure claim as a used-car guarantee
Fuel cost per kilometre Price per litre ÷ km/l Price per kilogram ÷ km/kg Use the same route and driving conditions where possible
Annual distance Your expected kilometres per year Use a realistic average, not an aspirational maximum
Annual fuel spend Cost/km × annual kilometres Keep purchase, inspection and repair costs separate

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) gives an approximate passenger-car CNG mileage range of 25–35 km/kg. That is broad FAQ guidance without a model-year test protocol, so it is a sense check rather than a substitute for measuring the used car you are buying.

3. Measure economy instead of trusting one dashboard number

For a candidate car, fill the same fuel type, reset the trip meter, drive a representative route, refill and divide kilometres by the quantity added. Repeat on more than one occasion if possible. For CNG, dispenser pressure affects how much gas enters the cylinder, so a single fill can make the apparent km/kg look unusually good or poor. Keep the route, traffic, load and air-conditioning conditions with each result.

Break-even: when does CNG recover its extra cost?

CNG’s fuel advantage matters only after it has paid back the price premium of the car or the cost of a proper conversion. Let:

  • S = petrol cost per kilometre minus CNG cost per kilometre.
  • K = your annual kilometres.
  • P = the CNG car’s extra purchase price plus immediate, documented CNG-related work compared with the petrol alternative.

Annual fuel saving is S × K. A simple payback estimate is P ÷ (S × K) years. If S is zero or negative at your local prices and realistic economy, there is no fuel-only payback. If the CNG candidate needs a major repair, use the inspected repair estimate in P rather than assuming the fuel saving will cover it.

Why annual distance changes the answer

Driving pattern What usually matters most Decision implication
Low annual mileage Purchase price, age, condition and convenience dominate because fuel savings accumulate slowly. A well-priced petrol car can be the lower-risk choice even if CNG is cheaper per kilometre.
Regular medium-distance use Local price spread, dependable CNG access and the car’s actual economy determine payback. Calculate a dated payback rather than relying on a generic “CNG is cheaper” claim.
High annual mileage Fuel cost per kilometre and downtime become large ownership costs. A sound, compliant CNG car may justify a premium, provided range and refuelling fit the route.

This is a fuel-payback model, not a prediction of resale value or future prices. Petrol prices are market-sensitive, and CNG tariffs and availability vary by locality. Recalculate when prices, routes or the vehicle’s condition change.

Range and refuelling: the practical CNG trade-off

CNG is stored as a gas, and PPAC notes that onboard storage is comparatively less than petrol. The amount dispensed also depends on station pressure. The result is a shorter or less predictable usable range than the petrol tank may provide, especially when traffic, air-conditioning and load increase consumption.

Propane LPG Gas Conversion Kits for V5/V8 6/8Cylinder Sequential Injection Petrol Cars (6cyl Kits of Round Plug)
  • The kits here is for 6/8cylinder sequential injection EFI petrol cars convert to use propane lpg gas.
  • It's a bi-fuel kits, with it installed your car can run on either petrol or lpg gas. You can switch between two fuels freely.
  • Application: For 5/6 Cylinder electronically controlled Gasoline fuel injected vehicle
  • Compatibility: Suitable to both V type and in line engines. Suitable to both sequential as well as semi-sequential injection engines. Suitable to both turbo or non-turbo engines.
  • Not suitable for direct injection/FSI (fuel straight injection) engines--those which petrol fuel is directly injected into egnine to mix with air in cylinder, other than mixed with air in intake manifold;Neither carburetor engines.

Check the route, not just the tank

  • Map the stations you can use on commuting and common inter-city routes.
  • Ask the owner how far this exact car travels between fills in your normal traffic conditions.
  • Confirm that the car starts, idles and drives correctly on petrol as well as CNG; a converted bi-fuel car should retain petrol operation, but the actual vehicle must be tested.
  • Consider what happens if a station is closed or your route changes. A low-fuel warning should not leave you dependent on one distant pump.

Do not convert a theoretical CNG range into a guaranteed distance. Cylinder pressure, temperature, dispenser calibration, traffic and mechanical condition all affect the result.

Boot space, weight and payload

A CNG cylinder is fitted in the luggage area, so the usable boot shape and floor height change. Inspect the actual car with the cylinder installed rather than assuming the published boot volume still applies.

PNGRB’s general FAQ example for a 50-litre-water-capacity cylinder gives approximately 48 kg empty weight and about 9 kg of CNG capacity. These are illustrative estimates, not specifications for every cylinder or model. The added mass can reduce available payload, so check how the car sits and drives with passengers and luggage. A cylinder that leaves no practical room for your normal load can erase the convenience gained from lower fuel cost.

Factory-fitted versus aftermarket CNG

Factory-fitted bi-fuel car

  • Usually has model-specific integration of the engine calibration, fuel switching and cylinder packaging.
  • Still requires inspection for age, accident damage, neglected servicing and cylinder or valve condition.
  • May have less boot space and a different payload rating than the petrol version.

Retrofitted petrol car

  • Quality depends on the kit, installer, calibration, maintenance and the condition of the underlying petrol engine.
  • Petrol operation should remain available, but verify both modes during a cold start, warm driving and acceleration.
  • Ask for the kit make and model, installation invoice, service history, emission documentation and every registration entry associated with the conversion.

PNGRB gives an approximate historical conversion-cost range of ₹25,000–₹55,000 depending on vehicle type and make. It is not a current quotation. Treat any seller’s “cheap conversion” claim as incomplete until a qualified CNG workshop confirms compatibility, parts and paperwork.

Legal and paperwork checks in India

A CNG conversion is not approved merely because the engine runs on gas. The vehicle, kit, installation and registration must comply with the applicable rules for its emission standard and weight category.

A Press Information Bureau release from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways dated 23 August 2022 referred to G.S.R. 625(E), notified on 11 August 2022. It stated that retrofitment of CNG and LPG kits was notified for BS-VI gasoline vehicles below 3.5 tonnes and that retrofitment for BS-IV vehicles was already permissible. The release is not a complete vehicle-specific legal check. Rules and local procedures can change, so verify the exact car, approved kit, installer and registration record with the relevant transport authority and a qualified CNG workshop.

Documents to match before paying

  • Registration certificate entries showing the permitted fuel configuration.
  • Vehicle identification number, engine number and ownership history matching the documents.
  • Kit and installation documentation, including approval details where applicable.
  • Service, repair and inspection records for both the petrol system and CNG system.
  • Insurance disclosure and any transfer or endorsement required after conversion.

Walk away from a seller who cannot explain a fuel entry, presents mismatched identification numbers, or asks you to “update the papers later.” The cost and risk of correcting an undocumented conversion belong in your decision before purchase.

Used CNG inspection checklist

Before the road test

  1. Start the engine cold. Listen for uneven idle, hard starting, warning lights or an unexplained petrol-only warm-up. Ask what the car normally does rather than accepting a pre-warmed engine.
  2. Inspect the cylinder area. Look for impact damage, corrosion, bent mounting hardware, damaged lines, disturbed seals and water or dirt entering the boot. Do not remove valves or loosen fittings yourself.
  3. Check usable boot space and payload. Put the luggage you actually carry into the car and inspect clearance around the cylinder and fittings.
  4. Test both fuels. Confirm that the selector, indicators and changeover work without hesitation. Drive gently and under load on each fuel, watching for misfire, loss of power, stalling or warning lights.
  5. Check the petrol system too. A bi-fuel car that has been run almost exclusively on CNG still depends on its petrol tank, pump, injectors and lines for starting and backup range.
  6. Request a qualified CNG inspection. PPAC says technical suitability should be determined by a workshop or service station familiar with CNG kit fitment. Ask for a written assessment of the engine, reducer, injectors, lines, shut-off components, cylinder and mounting.

After the road test

  • Compare the workshop report with the seller’s claims and the registration documents.
  • Price every immediate repair, tyre replacement, service and documentation correction before calculating payback.
  • Do not buy hardware online and treat self-installation as a shortcut. CNG fitment is vehicle-specific and should be assessed and carried out by qualified personnel.

Safety: fuel properties are not a condition guarantee

PPAC states: Natural gas is lighter than air. In the event of a leak it will rise and disperse in the atmosphere and not form puddles (as in petrol) or spread (as in LPG). IndianOil likewise describes natural gas as having a high auto-ignition temperature and dispersing upward. These are general fuel properties, not a guarantee about a particular used car, cylinder, valve, installation or maintenance history.

Safety depends on an intact, correctly mounted cylinder; approved components; leak-free lines and connections; proper servicing; and compliance with applicable inspection requirements. Never ignore a gas smell, hissing sound, damaged mounting or warning light. Stop using the vehicle and have it checked by a qualified CNG professional.

Ownership cost beyond fuel

The cheapest fuel bill can be overwhelmed by a poor purchase. Compare the complete first-year and expected ownership cost:

  • Purchase price and financing difference, if any.
  • Immediate mechanical, tyre, suspension and air-conditioning work found during inspection.
  • CNG-specific inspection, repair or documentation costs.
  • Time and fuel spent reaching a suitable refuelling station.
  • Boot-space and payload compromises that affect how you use the car.

NITI Aayog published an illustrative five-year comparison in which listed running costs were approximately ₹10 lakh for a Tata Tigor EV, ₹16 lakh for a Tata Nexon EV, ₹12 lakh for a petrol Ford Ecosport, ₹12 lakh for a diesel Ford Ecosport and ₹9 lakh for a CNG Maruti Suzuki Ertiga Vxi. The page excerpt does not establish the report year or a current used-car methodology. These figures describe specific examples and assumptions; they cannot be transferred to your vehicle, city or purchase decision.

Which buyer should choose petrol?

  • You drive relatively few kilometres each year, so fuel savings would take a long time to recover any price premium.
  • CNG stations are inconvenient, unreliable for your route or absent where you regularly travel.
  • The petrol car is materially cheaper, newer or better maintained than the CNG alternative.
  • The CNG car has missing conversion records, a questionable registration entry or unresolved engine and cylinder issues.
  • You need maximum boot flexibility or frequent long-distance travel without planned refuelling.

Which buyer should choose CNG?

  • You have a high and predictable annual distance and a clearly lower calculated CNG cost per kilometre.
  • Reliable stations are on your daily and regular long-distance routes.
  • The candidate has documented compliance, a sound cylinder installation and a qualified inspection report.
  • The purchase-price premium and immediate repairs are small enough to be recovered within your intended ownership period.
  • You accept reduced boot space and plan for the car’s actual range rather than a brochure estimate.

A decision worksheet you can complete in one viewing

  1. Write down the exact petrol and CNG candidates, their prices, odometer readings and fuel configurations.
  2. Record dated local petrol and CNG prices and calculate each cost per kilometre from realistic economy.
  3. Multiply the difference by your annual kilometres to obtain annual fuel saving.
  4. Add the CNG car’s purchase premium, conversion-related work and every inspection estimate; divide by annual saving for a simple payback period.
  5. Verify range, station access, boot usability and both-fuel operation on the actual car.
  6. Have a qualified CNG-aware workshop inspect the vehicle and reconcile its report with the registration and kit documents.
  7. Choose the car whose total risk and cost fit your ownership period—not the car with the lowest advertised fuel figure.

For an India-based used-car buyer, the defensible answer is conditional: CNG can deliver lower running cost per kilometre, but only when local prices, real economy, annual distance, access, legal records and vehicle condition all support the calculation. Petrol is often the safer financial choice when running is limited or the CNG system’s history is uncertain.
