A good used-petrol-car test drive is a structured inspection, not a five-minute spin around the block. Confirm that you are allowed and insured to drive, verify the car’s identity and history, inspect it while cold, then use a route that matches your normal driving. Pay attention to starting, idle quality, steering, braking, transmission, noises, warning lights, leaks and controls. Any unexplained symptom should be documented and checked by an independent mechanic before you commit.
Keep one important limit in mind: a road test and a statutory inspection are not a complete mechanical diagnosis. In the UK, the MOT test does not assess the condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox. Treat the drive as a way to find evidence and decide whether a professional pre-purchase inspection is justified.

1. Set up a legal, useful test drive
Confirm permission and insurance
Ask the seller for permission before moving the car and confirm that it is insured for your test drive. Do not drive if the seller, insurer or local rules do not permit it. If the seller insists on driving only, you can still inspect the car as a passenger, but you will not be able to assess controls and pedal feel yourself.

Arrange to view the car before it has been warmed up if possible, and ask the seller not to start it in advance. A cold start gives you a better chance to observe how readily it starts, how the idle settles and whether noises appear before the engine reaches operating temperature. This is a practical preference rather than a legal requirement; a seller may not be able to provide a genuinely cold car.

Plan a representative route
Choose a safe route with enough time for low-speed manoeuvres, ordinary urban driving and faster roads where legal. Include the road surfaces and traffic you normally encounter. Consumer.gov recommends test-driving in conditions similar to your usual use, so a commuter should not judge a car solely on an empty industrial estate. Do not create risk by attempting an emergency stop, excessive speed or an illegal manoeuvre.
2. Verify the car before you turn the key
Identity and records
Check the registration, vehicle identification number (VIN) and the paperwork against the actual car. For a UK purchase, the government’s used-vehicle checks include comparing the seller’s details and V5C log book with DVLA information, reviewing MOT history and recall status, and matching the VIN and engine number to the log book. A mismatch is a reason to stop and resolve the issue before driving or paying a deposit.
Ask for service records and ask directly whether any known faults, dashboard warnings or recent repairs exist. Consumer.gov’s buying guidance also recommends reviewing service records. Look for dated invoices or entries that identify the work rather than relying only on a verbal statement that the car has been “looked after.”

An MOT history can reveal recorded failures and advisories, but an MOT pass is not a guarantee of mechanical condition. The official description of what an MOT covers specifically excludes the condition of the engine, clutch and gearbox. Use the history as background information, then assess the car’s behavior and obtain an independent inspection if it remains a candidate.
3. Inspect the parked car
Exterior and tyres
Walk around the car in good light. Look for mismatched paint, uneven panel gaps, cracked lamps, damaged glass and signs that a panel has been repaired. These observations do not prove poor repair quality, but they give you questions to ask about previous damage.

Inspect each tyre for obvious damage and abnormal wear. Find the recommended pressures in the vehicle’s manual or pressure placard, then check them cold with a reliable gauge. The DVSA examiner guidance recommends using the vehicle’s specified figures and a reliable gauge. A gauge is a useful optional preparation item, but it cannot assess the car’s overall condition.
Fluids and visible leaks
With the car safely parked and cool where appropriate, look under the engine bay and beneath the vehicle for fresh wetness or drops. Do not put your hands near hot or moving parts. UK MOT guidance includes checks for leaks in the fuel system, the security and condition of pipes and hoses, and secure sealing of the fuel cap; the relevant fuel-system guidance explains those inspection points.
Check the engine-oil level using the dipstick or electronic indicator and the vehicle’s minimum and maximum marks, following the owner’s manual. The DVSA’s vehicle-safety guidance sets out the same principle. Do not infer a fault from a low reading alone; ask when the oil was last checked or changed and have unexplained loss investigated.
Warning-light self-check
Turn the ignition on without starting, if the car’s design allows it, and watch the normal self-check. Warning lamps should illuminate as part of the check and then behave according to that model’s instructions after the engine starts. Exact patterns differ between vehicles, so use the owner’s manual rather than assuming that every lamp should go out in the same way. Any lamp that remains on, flashes or appears unexpectedly needs an explanation and documentation.
4. Cold start and idle: what to listen for
Starting behavior
From cold, note whether the engine starts promptly or needs repeated attempts. Once running, watch whether the idle settles into a steady rhythm. A brief change in idle immediately after starting can be normal on some cars, so record what you observe instead of declaring a diagnosis.

Unusual sounds
With the bonnet closed and then, only if safe, from outside the car, listen for new rattling, knocking, squealing or uneven running. Sound alone cannot identify a failed component. Write down when the sound occurs—on start-up, at idle, during acceleration, when turning or over a bump—and ask a qualified mechanic to investigate.

Exhaust observations
Look at the exhaust as a general observation while the car starts and drives away. Do not treat a particular colour as proof of a specific petrol-engine fault: appearance changes with temperature, weather, engine design and operating condition. Persistent smoke, a strong unusual smell or a warning light is a reason to pause the purchase and obtain professional advice, not to self-diagnose from a colour chart.
5. What to check while driving
Engine response
Accelerate progressively in a safe, legal place. The engine should respond consistently to the throttle without unexplained hesitation, surging or a sudden loss of power. Repeat the observation at different speeds and in the gear you would normally use. A single stumble may have several causes; note the conditions and have the car scanned or inspected rather than naming a failed part.
Steering and straight-line tracking
On a suitable, level road, check whether the steering feels consistent and whether the car tracks straight without continuous correction. Keep both hands ready and follow the road’s camber; do not release the wheel or deliberately test a pull in traffic. A persistent drift, vibration or heavy spot should be investigated, as it can involve tyres, alignment, steering or suspension.
Ride, suspension and body noises
At low speed, pass over ordinary bumps and listen for clunks, knocks, scraping or other odd noises. New Zealand Consumer Protection advises listening for clunks and unusual noises during a test drive. Note whether the sound changes when turning, braking or carrying a passenger. Do not diagnose a worn component from the noise alone.

Brakes
In a quiet, safe area with no vehicle close behind, apply the brakes gently and progressively. The pedal should not feel spongy or slack, and the car should not pull to one side. These are points highlighted in the DVSA examiner guidance. Avoid an abrupt emergency-stop experiment on a public road. Any vibration, grinding, warning lamp or inconsistent pedal feel warrants a professional check.
Manual clutch and gear selection
If the car has a manual gearbox, select every gear you can safely use and notice whether the clutch engages predictably and the lever moves without unusual resistance or noise. If it is automatic, observe whether it selects drive or reverse smoothly and whether changes are accompanied by hesitation, jolts or unexpected engine flare. These are observations, not conclusive diagnoses. Because the MOT does not assess engine, clutch or gearbox condition, a satisfactory drive still does not replace an inspection.
Temperature, air conditioning and controls
Watch the temperature gauge or display throughout the drive and follow the owner’s manual for what is normal for that model. There is no universal warm-up time or single correct gauge position. Investigate warning indications, an overheating message or a gauge behavior that the manual does not describe as normal.
Operate the air conditioning, heater, demister, windows, mirrors, lights, wipers and other basic controls. Test them while parked or when a passenger can operate them so that attention stays on the road. Record any control that fails, works intermittently or produces an unusual smell or noise.
6. Checks immediately after the drive
Recheck for changes
Park safely, switch off and look underneath again for fresh leaks. Walk around the engine bay without touching hot or moving parts and note unusual smells, new warning lamps or a change in idle before the engine is shut down. A leak or smell that appears only after driving is important information for the mechanic.

Write an evidence-based note
Record exactly what happened, when it happened and under what conditions: for example, “a clunk over the second speed bump while turning left,” rather than “suspension bad.” Photograph warning messages or fluid spots when safe and permitted. Ask the seller for an explanation and supporting documentation, but do not treat reassurance as a substitute for an inspection.
7. Decide whether to proceed
Reasons to pause the purchase
- VIN, engine number, registration or ownership paperwork does not match the car.
- The seller will not allow a lawful, insured test drive or refuses reasonable questions about records and known warnings.
- A warning lamp remains on or a message appears without a documented explanation.
- You find a fresh leak, fuel-system concern, damaged tyre or unsafe control.
- The brakes feel spongy or slack, the car pulls while braking, or steering and tracking are inconsistent.
- You hear persistent rattling, knocking, squealing, clunks or scraping, or feel repeated hesitation, vibration or harsh gear changes.
None of these observations identifies a particular failed part by itself. They do establish that you need evidence, a repair estimate or a professional opinion before committing money.
Arrange an independent inspection
If the car remains a candidate, arrange a pre-purchase inspection with a mechanic you choose, rather than relying solely on the seller’s workshop. Consumer.gov recommends an inspection by a trusted mechanic, and New Zealand Consumer Protection says a basic check is not a substitute for a professional inspection. Give the mechanic your written observations so the inspection can target the symptoms you experienced.
8. Compare several cars consistently
When two or more cars are still in contention, use the same route and the same observation sheet where practical. This creates a useful comparison without pretending to rank model reliability.
| Comparison point | What to record for each car |
|---|---|
| Start and idle | Cold-start promptness, idle stability and any repeatable sounds |
| Engine and road behavior | Throttle response, hesitation, vibrations and noises on the same surfaces |
| Steering and tracking | Consistency of steering and whether the car needs correction on a suitable level road |
| Braking | Pedal firmness, straight-line behavior and any vibration or warning indication |
| Transmission | Manual clutch and gear selection, or automatic engagement and shift smoothness |
| Records and condition | Service documentation, warning lights, visible leaks and tyre condition |
| Suitability | How the car performs in the traffic, speeds and road surfaces you actually use |
Choose the car with the clearest history and fewest unexplained symptoms only after an independent inspection confirms that the remaining risks and repair costs are acceptable to you.
