Choose the Opel that fits the job, then buy the best-documented example you can find. Corsa suits urban driving, Astra is the broadest all-rounder, Mokka and Crossland provide small-SUV packaging, and Insignia gives more room for long journeys. None is automatically the most reliable: engine suitability, maintenance records, recall status, condition and ownership costs matter more than the badge or model reputation.
Start with how you will use the car
Opel models sold in the United Kingdom are often badged Vauxhall; the mechanical and servicing questions are broadly the same, but equipment, tax and warranty terms can vary by market. Decide your normal journey pattern, passenger and luggage needs, annual mileage and local emissions restrictions before looking at adverts.

These are packaging choices, not a reliability league table. Official guidance does not provide a comparable failure-rate ranking for the complete Opel range, so a well-maintained example of a less fashionable model is usually a safer purchase than a neglected car with a better reputation.
Choose petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric from your actual journeys
Vauxhall’s buyer guidance describes petrol as “Better for shorter journeys / town and city driving”, diesel as “Better for longer journeys / motorway driving”, and electric or hybrid vehicles as having “lower servicing and maintenance costs”. Those are use-case descriptions, not promises that one fuel type is universally cheaper or more dependable.

Petrol
Petrol is generally the straightforward choice for short trips, frequent cold starts and lower annual mileage. It avoids the diesel particulate-filter operating requirements that can become troublesome when a diesel is used mostly for short urban runs. Check the exact engine, because two cars carrying the same displacement badge can have different designs, software and maintenance schedules.
Diesel
Diesel can make sense when you regularly cover longer distances and want strong low-speed torque. Ask how the car was used, and investigate diesel-particulate-filter and emissions-system history if its previous life was mainly urban. A low odometer reading does not prove that a diesel was used in the conditions it needs.
Hybrid and electric
Lower routine servicing needs can be an advantage, but verify the system fitted to the particular car. For an electric Opel, request battery-health evidence, inspect the charging cable and confirm that the included connector matches your home or public-charging setup. Do not infer battery condition from age alone. For a hybrid, check that both the combustion and electric systems operate correctly and that warning lights remain off after a proper drive.
PureTech 1.0 and 1.2 petrol: the paperwork matters
Vauxhall announced extended coverage in March 2024 for previous-generation PureTech 1.0 and 1.2 engines. Subject to the policy conditions, it covers 100% of parts and labour for up to 10 years or 112,000 miles. The named concerns are excessive oil consumption and premature timing-belt degradation, which can lead to an oil-pressure problem.

Do not treat every 1.2 engine as identical or assume that every used car qualifies. Before paying a deposit:
- Record the engine code and confirm that it falls within the relevant generation and policy rules.
- Ask for complete invoices, not only stamped service-book entries.
- Check that the specified oil was used at the correct intervals.
- Look for documented timing-belt inspections, belt replacement and any oil-pressure investigation.
- Ask an authorised repairer to confirm eligibility against the car’s VIN and servicing history.
A seller who cannot explain the oil specification, belt history or warning-light history has left you carrying the risk. If the car is eligible for support, the conditions still apply; coverage is not an automatic repair guarantee after purchase.
1.5 BlueHDi diesel: check the special coverage and maintenance trail
Vauxhall states that vehicles built between October 2017 and January 2023 have special coverage of five years or 93,000 miles, subject to conditions including maintenance to the manufacturer’s schedule and use of approved oils. The build date, mileage, VIN and invoice history all matter.
For a candidate in this range, obtain the VIN before viewing and ask the manufacturer or an authorised repairer to confirm applicable support and outstanding campaigns. Inspect invoices for the required oil and scheduled work. Also check cold starting, exhaust smoke, warning lamps, diesel-particulate-filter behaviour and any emissions-system repairs. A car outside the time or mileage limit may still be sound, but you should price it without assuming support will pay for a future fault.

Other engines: buy evidence, not internet reputation
The available official guidance does not publish a dated, comparable failure-rate table for every Opel petrol, diesel and electric engine. That means it is not defensible to label one model “the most reliable Opel” from reputation alone. Prioritise the specific car’s maintenance, cold-start behaviour and inspection results.
- Cold start: arrange to see the car before it has been warmed. Listen for abnormal rattles, misfires or prolonged cranking.
- Fluids and leaks: inspect oil and coolant levels, residue around the engine and signs of fresh cleaning that could hide a leak.
- Exhaust: watch for persistent blue, white or heavy black smoke after start-up and under acceleration.
- Warning lamps: turn the ignition on before starting and confirm that the expected lamps illuminate, then go out after the engine runs.
- Transmission: test every gear, clutch take-up, reverse selection and automatic shifts at different speeds.
- Diesel systems: ask for DPF and emissions-system history when the car has had mostly short journeys.
- Electric systems: request battery-health information and test charging rather than relying on the displayed range.
Check the car’s identity and history before arranging a viewing
For UK cars, GOV.UK’s used-car guidance requires checks of registration details, MOT status and history, and outstanding recalls. Gather the registration number, make, model and MOT test number first; do not rely on a seller’s screenshot.
- Run the registration through the official vehicle and MOT services. Compare the recorded make, model, fuel type, engine details, dates, mileages and advisories with the advert.
- Check the MOT history for repeated corrosion, suspension, brake, tyre or lighting advisories. A clean MOT shows that the car met the test requirements on that date; it is not a mechanical reliability certificate.
- Check outstanding safety recalls by registration or VIN. Vauxhall says recall work is carried out free through an authorised repairer, but confirm completion for the individual car.
- Ask for the V5C log book and compare the registration, VIN, colour, engine details and keeper information with the car. The V5C is not proof of ownership, so also verify the seller’s identity and payment details.
- Write down the VIN and engine number from the vehicle and match them to the documents and invoices. Do not proceed while a mismatch is unexplained.
Recall status, tax, insurance, support eligibility and used prices change. Recheck them for the buyer’s country and the exact VIN immediately before purchase.

Inspect the car in a way that exposes expensive faults
Before the test drive
- View the car in daylight and, if possible, on a dry surface so paint differences, corrosion and fluid leaks are visible.
- Insist on a cold start. Feel the engine or ask when it was last run; a seller who refuses a cold inspection removes an important diagnostic opportunity.
- Check panel gaps, paint texture, glass markings and signs of accident repair. Uneven tyre wear can indicate alignment, suspension or accident damage.
- Inspect all four tyres for tread, cracking, matching specifications and legal condition. Budget for replacement if the set is mixed or near its limit.
- Operate lights, windows, mirrors, central locking, infotainment, parking sensors, driver-assistance features, heating and air-conditioning.
- Look under the bonnet and beneath the car for oil, coolant, fuel or brake-fluid leaks, damaged undertrays and corrosion.
During the drive
- Test clutch bite and gearbox selection from cold, including reverse. Automatic cars should pull away and change gear without flares, jolts or warning messages.
- Check steering for pull, vibration or excessive play, and listen for suspension knocks over controlled bumps.
- Brake progressively and firmly on a safe, legal road. Pulsation, grinding, pulling or a brake warning lamp requires investigation.
- Use the car at urban speeds and, where legal and safe, at motorway speed. Confirm that temperature remains stable and no warning lamp appears.
- After the drive, recheck for leaks, unusual smells, cooling-fan behaviour and smoke.
Pay for an independent inspection when the car is expensive, has incomplete records, shows a warning sign or the seller will not permit a cold start and road test. The inspection fee is small compared with an engine, gearbox or emissions-system repair.

Match maintenance to the exact engine and age
Vauxhall’s owner guidance says service intervals vary with age, mileage and use. Use the vehicle’s schedule for that engine rather than a generic internet interval. Ask for evidence of:
- timing-belt inspection or replacement, or timing-chain-related work where applicable;
- engine oil and filter changes using the specified grade;
- coolant and brake-fluid replacement;
- spark-plug replacement on petrol engines;
- diesel fuel-filter, DPF and emissions-system servicing where required;
- transmission-fluid work when specified for the gearbox;
- recall repairs and software updates.
Invoices should identify the vehicle, date, mileage, parts and oil specification. A service stamp without supporting detail is useful, but weaker than itemised records.

The purchase price is only one part of the decision. Vauxhall advises including insurance, road tax, fuel or charging, servicing and depreciation when budgeting for a used vehicle. Add tyres, MOT fees where applicable, unexpected repairs, breakdown cover and finance interest if relevant.

Higher trim can add useful safety, comfort and driver-assistance equipment, but it may also bring larger wheels, costlier tyres, higher insurance or more components to repair. Compare the total monthly and annual cost, not only the advertised price.

A practical buying decision
- Define the job: choose small hatchback, all-round hatchback, small SUV or long-distance car before browsing.
- Filter by powertrain: use petrol for predominantly short trips, diesel only when your use genuinely includes regular longer journeys, and evaluate electric or hybrid charging and battery evidence.
- Shortlist documented cars: reject adverts with missing VINs, contradictory mileages or no credible service invoices.
- Run history checks: verify MOT records, recalls, identity and engine details before travelling to view.
- Inspect cold and drive: test the mechanical, electrical and safety items, then commission an independent inspection if anything is uncertain.
- Price known work: obtain written estimates for tyres, belts, fluids, brakes, DPF or emissions repairs and other advisories.
- Confirm support: for PureTech and 1.5 BlueHDi candidates, check VIN-specific eligibility and conditions with an authorised repairer.
- Buy on condition: select the example with the clearest history, correct engine for your use and affordable total ownership cost, even if it is not the cheapest advert.
Warning signs that should change the deal
- The seller will not provide the registration or VIN for history and recall checks.
- The V5C, VIN, engine number, invoices or recorded mileage do not agree.
- The car is presented warm, the battery has been disconnected, or a cold start is refused.
- Oil-pressure, engine, emissions, ABS, airbag or charging warnings remain illuminated.
- There is fresh oil or coolant, unexplained smoke, severe tyre wear, corrosion or fluid contamination.
- The clutch slips, gears crunch, automatic shifts are harsh, or steering and braking feel unstable.
- The advert claims coverage but cannot show the engine code, servicing evidence or VIN confirmation required by the policy.
- The seller pressures you to pay before an inspection or will not allow a reasonable road test.
Walk away when identity, safety or mechanical condition cannot be established. A lower price is not compensation for an unknown engine or gearbox failure.
What a clean purchase file should contain
Keep copies of the advert, signed receipt or invoice, V5C details, MOT record, recall confirmation, service invoices, inspection report, warranty or support correspondence and both keys. Record the mileage and outstanding work at handover. This file helps with future maintenance, a support claim and resale; it also makes discrepancies easier to challenge while the seller is still available.
The bottom line
There is no evidence-based single “best” used Opel. Buy a Corsa for compact urban work, an Astra for balanced everyday use, a Mokka or Crossland when small-SUV access matters, and an Insignia when space and long-distance comfort are priorities. Select petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric according to journeys and charging reality. For PureTech 1.0/1.2 and 1.5 BlueHDi cars, verify the exact engine, dates, mileage, maintenance and VIN-specific support. Finally, let MOT and recall checks, a cold inspection, a road test and the full ownership budget decide whether the individual car is worth buying.
