Used Mercedes EQS Price Guide: When a Luxury EV Costs Like an Economy Car

Some used Mercedes EQS sedans have fallen below $50,000, but the real bargain depends on warranty, battery condition, charging, insurance, tires and total ownership cost.

Sometimes, yes—but only in a narrow, date- and market-specific sense. Edmunds reported in 2025 that some 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS sedans were selling below $50,000, with average pricing around $53,000, despite an original price above $100,000. That puts certain used examples in the same broad shopping territory as new mainstream cars, but there is no verified, current, region-specific comparison proving that every used EQS is cheaper than a particular new economy car. Treat the headline as a depreciation example, not a universal price rule.

The more useful question is whether a used EQS still makes financial sense after financing, insurance, tires, charging, warranty coverage and potential repairs. This guide shows how to evaluate that trade-off.

What a used EQS actually costs

The clearest dated evidence is the 2022 model year. In a 2025 report republished by AP, Edmunds said some 2022 EQS sedans could be found for less than $50,000 and put average pricing at about $53,000. Those cars originally occupied a market position above $100,000. The figures describe broad-market examples available when the article was published, not a guaranteed 2026 asking price in your area.

For a newer reference point, Kelley Blue Book listed a $63,200 fair purchase price for a 2025 EQS 450+ when its page was accessed in 2026. Its condition-dependent estimates were $54,600 to $61,500 for trade-in and $54,800 to $61,700 for private-party value. These are different valuation categories, so a private seller should not treat the trade-in number as an offer, or the fair purchase price as a mandatory transaction price. See the Kelley Blue Book used 2025 EQS 450+ page for the methodology and current adjustments.

2026 EQS 450 4MATIC, Mercedes-Benz USA $102,900 MSRP New all-wheel-drive sedan MSRP

The manufacturer lists the 2026 sedan prices on its EQS model page. Because the evidence does not pair a current local EQS listing with a specific new economy car, compare an actual out-the-door quote in your region before claiming one is cheaper than the other.

Why luxury EV depreciation can be so severe

The EQS is not unique in facing a changing electric-car market. The International Energy Agency reports that U.S. used-EV resale values reversed after 2022. It also points to new-car price cuts in 2023—particularly from a major high-volume EV maker—as a force that quickly pushed down used values, while newer battery technology and buyer concerns about battery health or major repairs affected demand for older electric cars. Those are market-level forces, not an EQS-specific depreciation percentage. The IEA analysis is available in Global EV Outlook 2026.

Luxury positioning adds another layer. A six-figure launch price includes expensive materials, technology and engineering that do not retain their original dollar value once the first owner absorbs the steepest depreciation. A used buyer can therefore obtain a quiet, high-specification sedan for far less than its new sticker price, while still facing luxury-car costs for tires, insurance, bodywork and specialized service.

Which EQS version fits your use?

EQS 450+

Edmunds describes the 450+ as the single-motor, range-oriented choice. Kelley Blue Book lists a 390-mile estimated range and a 14-hour estimated charge time on 240 volts for the 2025 EQS 450+ page. Those are model-page estimates; verify the exact model year, wheel package, battery software and charging equipment on the vehicle you are buying.

EQS 450 4MATIC

The 450 4MATIC uses dual motors and all-wheel drive. It is aimed at buyers who prioritize traction and power over the maximum range focus of the rear-drive 450+.

EQS 580 4MATIC

The 580 4MATIC is the higher-output dual-motor configuration. Its performance and equipment can make it attractive, but a more complex specification may also mean higher insurance, tire and out-of-warranty component costs. Compare equipment and service records rather than assuming a higher trim is automatically the better bargain.

Sticker price is not cost of ownership

Kelley Blue Book modeled a five-year cost to own of $135,203 for a new 2026 EQS 450+. That total included $70,655 in projected depreciation and $64,548 in other modeled out-of-pocket expenses, including fuel, insurance, financing, state fees, maintenance and repairs. It is a new-car estimate, not a forecast for a used EQS, but it demonstrates why a low purchase price does not answer the whole budget question. Details are on KBB’s new 2026 EQS 450+ cost-to-own page.

A used buyer should build a separate five-year worksheet. Start with the negotiated out-the-door price, sales tax, registration, financing interest and expected resale value. Add an insurance quote using the exact vehicle identification number, annual mileage and drivers. Then budget electricity at your local rate, home-charger installation if needed, tires, alignment, scheduled service and a reserve for uncovered repairs. Do not import the new-car model’s depreciation figure into that worksheet; the vehicle has already experienced a different part of its value curve.

Warranty and battery checks before you buy

Mercedes-Benz USA’s 2026 EQ warranty booklet lists an EQS high-voltage battery limited warranty of 10 years or 155,000 miles. It also lists a 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty. Coverage depends on the specific vehicle’s in-service date, mileage, history, geography and exclusions. Read the VIN-specific terms with a Mercedes-Benz retailer before relying on remaining coverage. The booklet is available as a 2026 EQ warranty and service PDF.

  1. Record the in-service date. The battery and basic-warranty clocks begin according to the vehicle’s warranty record, not simply the model-year label.
  2. Check mileage against both limits. A low-mileage car can still be close to the time limit; a heavily driven car may be close to the mileage limit first.
  3. Request service and repair documentation. Confirm software campaigns, charging-system work and any accident-related high-voltage inspection.
  4. Ask how battery condition is documented. A dealer or qualified EV technician can explain what diagnostic report is available for that VIN. Do not substitute a seller’s verbal assurance for written records.
  5. Read exclusions and transfer rules. Confirm that coverage transfers to you and understand conditions involving modifications, collision damage or non-approved repairs.

Mercedes-Benz’s launch newsroom says, “The battery warranty confirms a long service life of the high-voltage batteries.” That is the manufacturer’s characterization, not an independent battery-life test; use the actual warranty terms and vehicle records for your decision. The statement appears in its EQS launch announcement.

Inspection checklist for a bargain-priced EQS

Low pricing can reflect ordinary depreciation, but it can also signal mileage, accident history, cosmetic damage or an urgent sale. Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection by a technician familiar with high-voltage vehicles before sending a deposit.

  • Vehicle history: check title status, collision records, flood exposure, odometer consistency and the number of previous owners.
  • Battery and charging: test AC charging, inspect the charge port and confirm that the car reaches the expected charging state without repeated faults.
  • Tires and wheels: measure tread, look for uneven wear and price replacement tires in the correct load and speed rating. Large luxury-EV tires can be a major recurring expense.
  • Suspension and brakes: listen for noises, check ride-height operation if equipped and inspect brake surfaces. Regenerative braking does not eliminate wear items.
  • Software and connectivity: verify that the current owner can transfer the account, that navigation and smartphone functions work, and that any subscription-dependent features meet your needs.
  • Interior electronics: test displays, cameras, climate controls, seat functions, driver-assistance features and every key.
  • Body repairs: inspect panel alignment, paint thickness and underbody shields, especially after curb or crash damage.
  • Service access: identify a nearby qualified service location and obtain a written estimate for the next scheduled maintenance.

Charging and daily-use requirements

The 2025 EQS 450+ estimate of 14 hours on a 240-volt connection illustrates why charging access matters. Actual time depends on the circuit, onboard charger, battery state, temperature and vehicle settings. Confirm the car’s included cables, the connector standard used in your market and the electrical capacity of your home before buying an optional Level 2 setup. If you rent, rely on public charging or share a circuit, map dependable charging locations and prices first.

Do not compare range figures without matching model year, wheel size, drivetrain and test method. The 390-mile KBB estimate applies to the specified 2025 450+ listing, not every EQS trim.

How to compare the EQS with another used luxury EV

Use a like-for-like worksheet rather than choosing on badge or headline discount. Compare:

Decision axis Questions to answer
Price and mileage What is the out-the-door amount, mileage, equipment and condition of each car?
Warranty How many months and miles remain on the basic and battery coverage, and what exclusions apply?
Battery and charging Is there a documented battery-health assessment? Can your home and public charging routine support the car?
Range and drivetrain Do you want the 450+’s range emphasis or the 4MATIC trims’ all-wheel drive and power?
Running costs How do insurance, tire size, electricity, financing and local service availability differ?
Resale prospects What do current local listings and independent valuation tools show for the exact year and trim?

Kelley Blue Book’s 2026 Best Resale Value release gave its luxury electric-car award to the Porsche Taycan. An award is a resale-value signal for that model, not a direct price, reliability or ownership-cost comparison with an EQS. Treat it as a prompt to investigate another vehicle, not as proof that it will cost less. The release is at KBB’s 2026 Best Resale Value winners page.

A practical buying sequence

  1. Set a total budget. Include tax, registration, financing, insurance, charging, tires and a repair reserve before looking at listings.
  2. Filter by use case. Choose 450+, 450 4MATIC or 580 4MATIC based on range, traction and power needs, not only the discount from original MSRP.
  3. Shortlist comparable cars. Match model year, mileage, drivetrain, wheels, accident history and warranty status.
  4. Get real quotes. Ask sellers for an itemized out-the-door price and obtain an insurance quote on the exact VIN.
  5. Verify the warranty. Have a Mercedes-Benz retailer confirm in-service date, remaining battery coverage and open campaigns.
  6. Arrange inspection and charging tests. Pay for an independent EV inspection and confirm your home or public-charging plan.
  7. Negotiate on evidence. Use documented tire wear, upcoming service, missing equipment and comparable local valuations rather than the original six-figure MSRP.
  8. Walk away when records are incomplete. A slightly cheaper car with uncertain title, battery history or warranty can erase the apparent bargain.

So, is a used EQS a good deal?

It can be, when the price is supported by clean history, usable battery and basic warranty coverage, acceptable insurance and tire costs, and a charging routine that fits your life. The 2022 examples below $50,000 reported in 2025 show how far the model can fall from its original positioning. The 2025 450+ valuation around $63,200 shows that newer cars can still cost substantially less than a new EQS, while remaining well above many economy-car budgets.

There is no evidence here for a blanket claim that a used EQS is cheaper than every new economy car, nor for an EQS-specific retained-value percentage or used-owner five-year cost forecast. Make the comparison with dated local numbers and the complete ownership budget. If those checks work, depreciation has created a genuine luxury-EV opportunity; if they do not, a low sticker price is merely an expensive starting point.
