The S-Class and BMW 7 Series are full-size luxury sedans with complex suspension, powertrains, electronics and comfort equipment. Their original prices, options and depreciation make used examples look tempting, but two cars wearing the same badge can have very different ownership prospects.

The available iSeeCars comparison is useful for direction, not certainty. It rates the Mercedes-Benz S-Class at 7.7/10 for reliability and the BMW 7 Series at 7.3/10. Those are publisher-level comparative ratings; they do not diagnose an individual listing, predict a particular repair or replace a professional inspection.
Price also depends heavily on year, mileage, engine, drivetrain, trim, options, location and condition. A low-priced 7 Series may simply be older, higher-mileage or less equipped than the S-Class beside it. Compare matched cars rather than asking which emblem is intrinsically better.

The 6.8-percentage-point depreciation difference favors the S-Class in that calculation, even though its 2022 used-price range is higher. A seller’s asking price, a vehicle’s condition and the cost of bringing it up to standard can easily outweigh a model-level average.
Choose the right generation before comparing badges
Mercedes-Benz S-Class W222 (2013–2020)
Auto Express identifies the W222 as a 2013–2020 generation. It went on sale in the United Kingdom in June 2013, received a facelift in July 2017 with engine changes, and was replaced by the W223 in 2020. The range included multiple engines and hybrid variants, so “W222 S-Class” is not a single mechanical specification.
The United Kingdom guide discusses diesel Euro 6 compliance and Clean Air Zones. Those rules are market-specific; do not apply them to a U.S. or other-market car without checking local regulations. A facelift-year car may also have different equipment and powertrain details from an earlier example.

BMW 7 Series model matching
For the BMW, identify the exact model year, engine, drivetrain and trim in the listing and vehicle records. A short-wheelbase and long-wheelbase car, a six-cylinder and a V8, or a rear-drive and all-wheel-drive version can differ materially in purchase price, fuel use, tire costs and repair exposure. Do not use the 2022 figures as a proxy for an older or newer 7 Series.
Why year and powertrain come first
Two cars can share a model name while using different engines, transmissions, suspension hardware, software and safety systems. Before comparing prices, record the VIN, model year, engine designation, drivetrain, wheelbase, trim, option packages, mileage and country of first registration. This prevents an apparently cheaper car from being compared with a newer or more powerful specification.

How to compare two actual listings
- Build a matched pair. Keep model year or generation, mileage, engine, drivetrain, wheelbase, trim and major options as close as possible.
- Normalize the price. Add sales tax, registration, transport, dealer fees, a pre-purchase inspection and immediate maintenance to the advertised price.
- Verify ownership records. Look for regular oil and filter service, brake and tire replacement, suspension work, software updates and documented transmission maintenance where applicable.
- Check title and usage. Confirm accident, flood, salvage, rental, fleet and import history. A clean title does not prove that a complex component has been maintained.
- Run a VIN recall search. In the United States, use the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s VIN lookup, then ask the manufacturer or dealer to confirm campaign completion for that market.
- Commission an independent inspection. Use a shop experienced with the specific brand and systems, not only a generic quick-lube inspection.
- Price the risks. Obtain written estimates for every defect and decide whether the total still fits your purchase and repair budget.
Use the same checklist and inspection standard on both cars. Otherwise, the better-documented vehicle can appear more expensive simply because its defects are known.
S-Class inspection checklist
The detailed used-car guidance available for the S-Class emphasizes expensive systems that are easy to overlook during a short test drive. Treat these as inspection prompts, not evidence that every car will fail.
Air suspension and leveling systems
- Leave the car parked on a level surface and compare ride height at all four corners.
- Check whether the vehicle sinks after sitting, rises promptly when commanded and remains level overnight.
- Listen for a compressor that runs unusually long or repeatedly.
- Inspect struts, lines and connections for leaks and ask for invoices for prior Airmatic or ABC work.
A warning-free dashboard does not prove that a slow leak or weak compressor is absent. The inspector should scan the control modules and test the system through its operating range.
Engine, cooling and transmission
- Inspect for oil and coolant leaks around the engine, hoses, reservoirs and undertrays.
- Check coolant condition and level when the engine is cold; unexplained loss requires diagnosis.
- Confirm a smooth cold start, stable idle and clean acceleration without warning lights.
- During the road test, verify smooth engagement, shifts, kickdown and reverse operation.
- Request transmission-fluid and service history where the manufacturer’s schedule or specialist advice calls for it.
Verdict’s July 15, 2026 guide specifically flags V8 coolant leaks and, on some high-mileage V8 cars, timing-chain guides as items to investigate. Those are prompts for a qualified diagnosis, not failure rates or a reason to reject every V8.
Rust and structural areas
Inspect the rear subframe, jack points, wheel arches, suspension mounting areas and the underside. Rust on Northeast U.S. cars can be particularly important because corrosion may affect both structure and the ability to remove suspension fasteners. A clean body panel does not rule out concealed underside corrosion.

Electronics and comfort equipment
Operate every seat adjustment, memory function, window, sunroof, climate zone, camera, parking sensor, audio function, keyless feature and driver-assistance setting. Verify that the COMAND screen and controls boot correctly and do not reboot. The guide calls out early W221 COMAND and screen-electronics concerns; if you are considering an older S-Class, test those functions repeatedly rather than accepting a seller’s assurance.
Brakes, tires and road behavior
Measure brake-disc and pad condition, inspect for vibration and confirm that the parking brake releases correctly. Check rear-tire tread as well as the fronts; Auto Express specifically advises checking brake wear and rear tire condition on W222 examples. Uneven wear can indicate alignment, suspension or accident issues.
What to inspect on a BMW 7 Series
The cited detailed checklist is S-Class-specific, so it should not be presented as a BMW failure-rate study. The BMW still deserves the same disciplined process because it uses similarly expensive luxury systems.
- Scan all control modules for stored, pending and history faults, not just the engine computer.
- Check the cooling system, oil leaks, exhaust, turbocharging hardware where fitted and engine-bay wiring.
- Test the transmission from cold through normal, sport and reverse operation.
- Inspect suspension components, adaptive dampers, air-suspension equipment where fitted, steering and wheel bearings.
- Operate the complete infotainment, instrument, seat, climate, camera and driver-assistance package.
- Measure tire tread and brake thickness and look for uneven wear or mismatched brands.
- Examine the underside for collision repairs, corrosion, fluid residue and damaged undertrays.
Ask the BMW specialist to identify known service campaigns for the exact VIN and engine. A generic “no fault codes” printout is not equivalent to a complete mechanical inspection.
Reliability, depreciation and ownership risk
The model-level reliability edge belongs to the S-Class in the cited comparison, but the difference is small enough that condition can dominate. A meticulously maintained 7 Series with complete records can be a safer purchase than an neglected S-Class with missing history. Conversely, an inexpensive S-Class with deferred air-suspension or electronic repairs can consume the apparent savings quickly.

The depreciation figures also favor the S-Class in the cited five-year calculation: 59.5% versus 66.4% for the 7 Series. Because the figures are publisher calculations, use them to understand a broad tendency rather than to predict your resale price. Local supply, mileage, specification, accident history and season affect what a buyer will actually pay.
Luxury-sedan ownership risk comes from complexity as much as from engine reliability. Air suspension, active safety sensors, powered seats, rear-seat controls, climate systems and large wheels can each create a significant bill. Set aside a repair reserve before purchase; do not spend the entire budget on the car itself.
Understanding the 2022 price gap
For 2022 used examples, iSeeCars lists BMW 7 Series asking prices from $37,483 to $79,375 and Mercedes-Benz S-Class asking prices from $60,995 to $108,393. These are ranges from that comparison, not guaranteed current prices, transaction values or estimates for another year.
The broad overlap is limited, and the ranges themselves are wide. A $37,000 BMW may differ from a $79,000 BMW in mileage, engine, wheelbase, accident history and equipment. Compare each car’s total cost after inspection and immediate service, not the lowest number in a search result.

Before the appointment
- Request the VIN, title status, maintenance invoices and both key fobs.
- Ask whether the car has been modified, tuned, tracked, flooded or used commercially.
- Confirm that the seller permits an independent inspection and a cold start.
- Check tire dates, recent battery replacement and any dashboard warnings in photographs.
At the specialist’s shop
- Have the technician scan all modules and save the report.
- Put the car on a lift for leaks, corrosion, subframe condition, suspension play and underbody damage.
- Measure brakes and tires instead of describing them as merely “good.”
- Perform a cold start and extended road test with climate control, infotainment and assistance systems operating.
- Request written estimates separating safety defects, imminent repairs and cosmetic recommendations.
VIN recall verification
NHTSA’s U.S. lookup can show unrepaired safety recalls for a VIN. The agency warns that the tool may not show recalls already repaired, some very recent campaigns before all VINs are identified, recalls older than 15 years and international recalls. After checking NHTSA, contact the relevant manufacturer or an authorized dealer for the vehicle’s country and ask for campaign completion and outstanding work.

How to decide when the cars are close

Common buying mistakes
Shopping by badge or monthly payment
A payment can hide a high purchase price, long loan term and no reserve for repairs. Compare the cash-equivalent price, taxes, fees, insurance and maintenance plan.
Assuming a newer car is automatically safer

A dealer inspection may be useful, but an independent specialist gives you a less conflicted assessment and can focus on the exact systems that are expensive to repair.
Skipping a cold start
Starting the car warm can conceal slow suspension settling, hard starting, smoke, rough idle or cooling-system behavior. Arrange to see it cold.
Treating a history report as proof of health
History reports supplement, but do not replace, a lift inspection, module scan and road test. Unreported accidents and deferred maintenance can still exist.
Which sedan is the better buy for you?
Choose the S-Class when
- You value the cited model-level reliability and depreciation results and can afford its generally higher asking prices.
- The specific car has complete records, a clean specialist inspection and no unresolved suspension, leak, rust or electronics concerns.
- You want a particular S-Class generation, engine or rear-seat configuration and have verified its local regulations and parts support.
Choose the 7 Series when
- A comparable BMW is substantially less expensive after accounting for mileage, equipment and fees.

Bottom-line buying method
Use the model statistics to create a shortlist, not to choose a car sight unseen. Match the year and powertrain, compare the complete purchase cost, verify recalls by VIN, inspect the expensive systems and keep money in reserve. On the available evidence, the S-Class is the better directional buy for reliability and value retention, while the 7 Series can be the better financial decision when its lower price reflects a genuinely well-maintained example rather than deferred work.
