Used Maruti Suzuki Swift Petrol vs Diesel: Which Is Better for Your Driving?

A used Swift’s better fuel type depends on its generation and condition, your routes and annual distance, fuel prices, ownership plans, and registration-area rules.

Neither a used Maruti Suzuki Swift petrol nor diesel is automatically the better buy. Choose based on the exact model year and condition, how and how far you drive, the price gap, local fuel costs, expected ownership period, and rules where the car is registered. Diesel may suit buyers who value stronger torque and regularly cover longer distances; petrol may make more sense for lower annual use or where age-based diesel restrictions could limit ownership.

Start with the exact Swift, not the fuel label

Swift specifications changed across generations, so compare cars from the same period and check each vehicle’s year, generation, variant, transmission, emissions standard, and documents. A 2011 petrol-versus-diesel comparison is not interchangeable with a 2018 comparison, and figures for the current Swift do not describe older used cars.

Maruti Suzuki’s current Swift information describes petrol and petrol-CNG configurations. Used Swift diesels are older model-year vehicles, so assess them against the specifications and rules for their specific year and registration location. Maruti Suzuki’s 2024 launch release quotes efficiency of up to 25.75 km/l for that then-new petrol model; that is not a figure to apply to an older used Swift.

What the published specifications show

The paired examples below illustrate differences within particular releases—not a universal comparison for every Swift. The mileage figures are manufacturer-published, certified claims for those releases, not promises of real-world fuel economy from a used car.

Sources: Maruti Suzuki’s 2011 release and 2018 release. In both cited examples, diesel has the higher stated torque. In the 2011 release, petrol has the higher stated power. These specifications alone do not establish which used car is quicker, cheaper to own, or in better condition.

Which fuel fits your driving?

Petrol may fit better if

  • Your annual distance is relatively low, making a higher purchase price or potential running-cost difference harder to offset.
  • Your driving is mostly short urban trips, or you value avoiding a diesel vehicle that may face tighter age-based restrictions in your registration area.
  • The petrol example is better maintained, better documented, or priced more attractively than the diesel alternative you are considering.

Diesel may fit better if

  • You regularly make longer drives and value the stronger torque shown in the cited 2011 and 2018 specifications.
  • The specific diesel car has a sound service and ownership record, passes an independent inspection, and its purchase price and likely upkeep fit your budget.
  • You have checked that the car’s age and registration location allow the ownership period you expect.

These are decision factors, not guarantees of fuel savings or reliability. A poorly maintained diesel can be a worse buy than a well-kept petrol Swift, and annual distance alone cannot determine a break-even point.

Calculate ownership cost using your own numbers

Do not use a generic mileage threshold to decide when diesel “pays back.” First compare similar cars and write down the purchase-price difference, your expected annual distance, current petrol and diesel prices where you refuel, likely maintenance and repair costs based on inspection, and how long you expect to keep the car. Then estimate fuel spending for each option using a realistic consumption estimate for the individual car, not the release’s certified mileage claim.

  • Purchase: compare asking prices for similar years, variants, transmissions, and condition.
  • Fuel: use local pump prices and a defensible estimate for your routes and the car’s condition.
  • Upkeep: factor in service records and inspection findings; do not assume one fuel type always costs less to maintain.
  • Time horizon: consider how many years you can legally and practically use the vehicle where it is registered.

Without those inputs, a single break-even distance would be false precision.

Check fuel requirements and emissions documents

Fuel specifications can differ by model year and market. For the 2018 Swift, Maruti Suzuki’s owner’s manual specifies petrol with an octane number (RON) of 91 or higher. For diesel, it specifies cetane number higher than 51 and sulfur below 50 ppm, and recommends diesel conforming to EN590. These are instructions for that manual, not a substitute for checking the manual that matches the particular car. Find Maruti Suzuki owner’s manuals.

Also verify the specific vehicle’s emissions standard from its documents. Maruti Suzuki announced BS6 petrol Swift variants in 2019 ahead of the implementation deadline; that does not mean every petrol Swift is BS6. The year and exact variant matter. Maruti Suzuki’s 2019 announcement describes that introduction.

Check age restrictions for the registration location

Vehicle age can change the practical value of a used Swift. Government of India releases have described Delhi-NCR restrictions under which petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10 years shall not be registered or ply, respectively. Court orders and local implementation can affect the current position, so this cited material is not a complete, up-to-date legal check. Before buying, confirm the specific vehicle’s eligibility and the current rules with the relevant transport authority. Press Information Bureau release (2020) and Press Information Bureau release (2023).

Use a vehicle-by-vehicle buying checklist

  1. Match the comparison: record each car’s year, generation, variant, transmission, emissions standard, registration location, and asking price.
  2. Review its history: ask for service records, ownership and odometer history, and accident information; check that the documents are consistent.
  3. Arrange an independent inspection: have a mechanic or used-car inspection service assess the individual vehicle and identify repair concerns before you commit.
  4. Check local use constraints: verify current registration and age rules for the specific car and where it will be used.
  5. Run your cost comparison: use the actual price gap, local fuel prices, annual distance, likely upkeep, realistic economy, and expected holding period.
  6. Read the matching manual: confirm fuel requirements for the specific year and market.

Verdict: choose the better example for your routes and location

For regular longer journeys, a well-documented diesel Swift can be attractive if its condition, price, and permitted ownership period make sense. For lower annual use—or where diesel age restrictions are a concern—a petrol Swift may be the more practical choice. In either case, condition and paperwork can outweigh the fuel label: compare specific cars, verify local rules, and base the decision on your own costs rather than historic certified mileage.
