Maruti Suzuki Swift vs Hyundai Grand i10 Nios: Which Used Hatchback Should You Buy?

There is no universal winner between a used Swift and Grand i10 Nios. Compare matching years and transmissions, verify the exact variant, inspect its history and equipment, and decide after checking local costs and driving both.

There is no automatic winner between a used Maruti Suzuki Swift and a used Hyundai Grand i10 Nios. Compare cars of the same registration year and transmission where possible, then choose based on the exact variant, condition, history, local price, fuel needs and your test drive. A model name alone cannot tell you which individual car is the better buy.

What should you compare first: the year, variant and transmission

Start with the registration year, generation, trim and powertrain of each car. Swift and Nios specifications and safety equipment have changed over time, so a current brochure or a review of a newer model may not describe the used car you are viewing. Ask the seller for the variant and verify it against the car’s documents and equipment.

Hyundai’s current Grand i10 NIOS lineup lists petrol manual, petrol AMT and petrol-CNG manual configurations. That is not proof that every older Nios was offered in the same combination; confirm availability for the specific year and variant. Hyundai’s current features page also shows that some stability-control equipment varies by trim and transmission: Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS features.

For context, CarDekho’s comparison published May 11, 2024 describes that generation’s Swift as a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol and the Nios as a 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol. It reports manual and AMT choices for the petrol cars and a manual-only CNG Nios in that comparison. These details describe the models compared then, not every used example: CarDekho’s 2024 specifications comparison.

Swift or Grand i10 Nios second hand: petrol, CNG or automatic?

Choose the fuel and gearbox that suit your actual routes, not a specification-sheet assumption. A petrol-CNG manual Nios may suit a buyer who wants that fuel option and is comfortable with a manual gearbox. If you need an automatic, check the exact car: the current NIOS lineup lists petrol AMT, while the current lineup information does not list a CNG automatic. Older model-year combinations may differ, so verify the individual car’s documents and variant.

The cited 2024 comparison describes the Swift as petrol-only for that model generation. Do not extend that statement to every Swift year without checking the particular listing. If comparing AMTs, test how each car responds in slow traffic, when moving off, and while reversing or parking; make the decision on the actual vehicles available.

What does the safety evidence say?

Crash-test ratings apply to the version and protocol tested, not to every car carrying the same model name. Global NCAP’s India results index lists separate Swift tests published in 2014, 2018 and 2022, and a Grand i10 Nios test published in 2020. Do not combine them into one timeless rating for either model: Global NCAP India results.

  • 2018 Swift: Global NCAP reported two stars for adult occupant protection and two for child occupant protection for the tested version. Its report also raised concerns about driver-chest protection and body structure: Global NCAP’s 2018 Swift report.
  • 2022 Swift: The fact sheet describes weak driver-chest protection in the frontal test, poor chest protection in the side test, an unstable footwell and bodyshell, and no standard ESC in the tested specification: Global NCAP’s 2022 Swift fact sheet.
  • 2020 Grand i10 Nios: The fact sheet reports two stars for adult occupant protection and two for child occupant protection for the tested version. It describes an unstable bodyshell and footwell, as well as occupant-protection limitations: Global NCAP’s 2020 Grand i10 Nios fact sheet.

These are test-specific findings, not a safety verdict on every year or trim and not an assessment of the used car in front of you. Check which airbags, restraints, brakes and stability equipment the exact variant has, and inspect the car for crash repairs. In the 2018 Swift report, Global NCAP Secretary General David Ward said, “The latest version of the Swift sold in India has improved and it is good to see dual airbags as standard.” That statement belongs to the report and period in which he made it.

How to compare the condition and history of two listings

A well-maintained example can be a better purchase than a newer or more highly specified car with uncertain history. Ask for service records and check ownership and accident or repair history. If possible, arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection.

  • Match the registration and variant details to the seller’s claims and available records.
  • Look for signs of accident repair, inconsistent paint or panel gaps, and evidence of water damage.
  • Check tyres, brakes, warning lights and the operation of the clutch or AMT. During the drive, note any unusual noise, vibration or hesitation.
  • Confirm that the documents are complete and that the car’s identity matches them.

These checks help assess the individual car; they do not establish a model-wide failure-rate ranking.

Which one is cheaper to maintain or more comfortable?

The available comparable evidence does not settle which used Swift or Nios costs less to own, needs fewer repairs, holds value better or has the more comfortable cabin. Those outcomes depend on the specific car, its condition and history, your location and how you use it. Avoid treating an asking price, an old mileage claim or a general reputation as a like-for-like ownership-cost comparison.

For each candidate, get local insurance and service estimates, compare the seller’s asking price with similar cars in your area, and consider likely fuel use on your own routes. Sit in both cars and drive them on roads similar to your usual journey; judge seating, visibility, ride and cabin noise for yourself.

How to make the final choice

  1. Shortlist comparable cars. Match registration year and transmission where possible, and record each car’s variant, fuel type and mileage.
  2. Verify the equipment. Use the relevant model-year information rather than assuming current specifications apply to an older car.
  3. Assess safety and condition. Check the equipment fitted to that variant, review available history, inspect for repairs and test the brakes and gearbox.
  4. Compare the real costs. Get local insurance and service estimates and compare asking prices for similar cars in your city.
  5. Drive both candidates. Choose the one that feels right for your routes and driving needs, provided its condition and paperwork check out.

If only one candidate has verifiable history, suitable equipment and a condition you can confirm, that evidence should outweigh a blanket preference for Swift or Nios. If both are equally convincing, let your fuel and gearbox needs, local price and test drive decide.
