A sound used Mahindra TUV300 inspection combines a cold visual check, fluid and tyre checks, a controlled road test, and verification of maintenance records. Use this checklist to identify evidence that needs professional diagnosis—not to certify a vehicle yourself. Confirm the exact model year, variant and transmission, then use the matching TUV300 owner’s manual because equipment and schedules can vary.
1. Prepare before you see the vehicle
Collect the car’s identity and paperwork
- Ask for the registration details, exact model year, variant, transmission type and current odometer reading.
- Request invoices, service-book entries, inspection reports and records of major repairs. Photographs of work are useful, but dated invoices are stronger evidence.
- Check which equipment is actually fitted to that variant before operating it. Do not assume every TUV300 has the same lamps, controls, safety equipment or wheel specification.
- Arrange to see the vehicle with the engine cold if possible. A warm engine can hide difficult starting, smoke or a temporary noise.
- Choose daylight and a level, dry surface. Carry a torch, clean cloth, tyre-pressure gauge, tread-depth gauge if available, phone camera and paper for recording observations.
The maintenance intervals in the manual are guidance for the applicable vehicle version. They show what should have been done, not proof that it was done. Reconcile every claimed service with the odometer and date.

2. Engine bay and fluid inspection
Look for leaks before touching anything
With the vehicle parked, inspect the engine compartment, the ground underneath and visible underbody areas for wet patches, drips, stains or fresh residue. Mahindra’s manual states: “Check the engine compartment and the underbody of the vehicle for any leaks.” A clean engine is not proof of good condition—recent washing can remove evidence—so look for damp joints, trails and deposits around hoses, pipes, seals and the radiator area.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFuel smell or visible fuel leakage is a safety issue. Mahindra’s care guidance says the cause of a leak or fuel vapour should be found and corrected immediately. Do not continue a road test when fuel is leaking or the cabin or engine bay has a strong fuel smell; have the vehicle recovered for qualified inspection.

Check engine oil correctly
- Park on level ground and switch the engine off.
- Allow the oil to settle as specified in the manual.
- Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it fully and remove it again.
- Confirm the oil mark lies between the dipstick’s minimum and maximum marks.
- Record a low, overfull, very dirty or milky-looking result for a mechanic. Do not blindly add oil before documenting the level and asking why it is abnormal.
Do not reach near hot or moving components. Oil level alone cannot establish engine health; starting quality, smoke, noises, warning lamps and the service record must be considered together.
Inspect accessible reservoirs and hardware
From a safe position, note the apparent level and condition of the coolant, brake/clutch fluid and power-steering fluid reservoirs. Look for cracked tanks, damaged caps, stained areas, deteriorated hoses, loose joints, corroded pipes and a weak or damaged battery. Never open a hot cooling system. Fluid contamination, an empty reservoir or a level below its marked range calls for professional assessment rather than a quick top-up.
The owner’s manual includes leaks, hoses, joints, pipes, battery, coolant, brake/clutch fluid, oil and power-steering fluid among general checks. During startup and idle, record unusual knocking, grinding, hissing, smoke, warning lights or a smell of burning fluid. These observations are symptoms to report, not diagnoses.

3. Suspension, steering, wheels and tyres
Inspect without creating a safety hazard
Look through the wheel openings and around accessible suspension and underbody parts for bent components, fluid leakage, torn rubber, corrosion, loose fasteners or impact damage. Do not crawl under a TUV300 supported only by its own jack. A workshop with proper lifting equipment is required for a meaningful underside examination.

The scheduled-maintenance chart calls for suspension-bush and suspension-arm/link inspection at 10,000 km and then every 20,000 km. It also lists under-chassis bolt checks at 3,000 km, 20,000 km and every 20,000 km thereafter. These intervals are references for checking the records; they do not replace inspection of the individual car.
Examine each tyre
- Check tread across the full width and compare left and right sides.
- Inspect sidewalls for cuts, bulges, cracking, exposed cord or impact marks.
- Look for uneven shoulder, centre or patch wear. It can justify questions about alignment, suspension, inflation or tyre history, but it does not prove one particular fault.
- Check the spare wheel, jack and wheel-brace condition if those items are included with the car.
- Measure inflation with a pressure gauge when the tyres are cold and compare the readings with the vehicle’s specified pressure.
Mahindra’s manual and current care guidance both call for checking tyre condition and pressure. A seller’s statement that the tyres were recently inflated is not a substitute for a gauge reading.
Check steering at rest
With the engine running, turn the steering gradually in a safe open area. Note excessive free play, abnormal effort, grinding, a steering warning lamp or fluid leakage. Do not hold the steering at full lock for longer than necessary. Any uncertainty about steering control warrants a workshop inspection before purchase.
4. Road-test procedure
Choose a safe route
Use a legal route that includes a smooth surface, modest bumps, a low-speed turn, normal acceleration and a controlled stop. Buckle up and ask the seller to disclose any known warning. Stop immediately if the vehicle feels unsafe.

- Low-speed manoeuvring: In an empty area, check clutch take-up or automatic engagement (as applicable), steering response, brake-pedal feel and parking-brake operation.
- Acceleration and cruising: Listen for new mechanical noises, hesitation or vibration. Check that the vehicle tracks predictably and that the transmission selects gears normally for its type.
- Bumps and uneven surfaces: Listen for clunks or repeated knocking. Note excessive bouncing or a corner that sits lower than the others.
- Braking: Brake progressively in a safe location. Pulling, pulsation, grinding, a sinking pedal or a brake warning lamp requires investigation.
- After the drive: Park on a clean surface, switch off and look again for fresh drips, smells or new warning messages.
The manual directs owners to investigate unusual noise, leakage, smell or vibration or take the vehicle to an authorised dealer or qualified shop. Treat the road test as a way to capture symptoms for that assessment, not as a test that proves a component is sound.
5. Body, glass and exterior checks
Read the body for repair clues
Walk around the TUV300 in good light and view each panel from several angles. Check the bonnet, roof, doors, fenders, tailgate, bumpers and visible underbody edges for dents, deep scratches, rust, ripples, overspray, colour mismatch and inconsistent gloss. Compare panel gaps and fasteners on opposite sides. A single replaced panel is not automatically a problem, but uneven gaps, disturbed bolts or several mismatched panels justify a professional accident-repair inspection.
Mahindra’s care page specifically advises: “Inspect the body for deep scratches that could lead to rusting.” Photograph every affected area and ask whether it was repaired, when and by whom. Surface appearance cannot establish structural integrity; hidden chassis or crumple-zone damage requires qualified examination.

Operate closures and check visibility equipment
- Open and close every door, the tailgate and the bonnet. Confirm that hinges are secure and latches engage without excessive force.
- Check the hood prop or support, door seals and signs of water entry in carpets, the boot and spare-wheel well.
- Inspect the windscreen and other glass for cracks, chips, delamination and signs of replacement.
- Test exterior lamps, indicators, brake lamps, reverse lamps, rear fog lamp if fitted, wipers and washers.
- Look for condensation inside lamp units, broken mounts or lights that sit unevenly.
The owner’s manual includes exterior lamps and door and hood latches among checks. Equipment that is absent because of the variant should be recorded as “not fitted,” not treated as a defect.

6. Match maintenance records to the schedule
Write the odometer and date beside every invoice, then compare the pattern with the applicable manual. The following figures come from Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.’s TUV300 scheduled-maintenance chart; verify the exact manual version for the car you are buying.
| Item | Manual schedule reference | What to verify in records |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil and oil filter | Replace at 3,000 km, 10,000 km, then every 10,000 km | Invoice date, odometer, oil/filter description and any explanation for missed intervals |
| Brake and clutch fluid | Replace every 40,000 km or two years | Date and mileage of fluid replacement; inspect current level and condition separately |
| Suspension bushes and suspension arms/links | Inspect at 10,000 km, then every 20,000 km | Inspection findings, replaced parts and invoices where wear was found |
| Under-chassis bolts | Check at 3,000 km, 20,000 km, then every 20,000 km | Evidence of scheduled checks and any tightening or replacement work |
| Coolant, fuel filter, brakes, steering-fluid leaks, tyres and exhaust mountings | Listed in the maintenance chart at their applicable service points | Completed service entries, parts fitted and notes about defects |
Mahindra says owners should retain records that prescribed maintenance was performed. Missing paperwork does not prove neglect, but it increases uncertainty. If the mileage sequence is inconsistent, ask for an explanation and have the vehicle independently inspected before making an offer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Compare two used TUV300s without inventing a score
The official material does not provide a TUV300-specific reliability ranking, failure rate or weighted buyer score. Compare the cars using the same route, lighting and recording method instead of relying on impressions.

8. Findings that should stop the purchase process
Pause negotiations and arrange a qualified independent inspection when you find fuel vapour or leakage, unexplained fluid loss, persistent unusual noise or vibration, steering or braking concerns, serious tyre or suspension damage, or body repairs that may involve structural areas. Use a local professional pre-purchase inspection service or a Mahindra-authorised workshop suited to the vehicle’s location; ask for a written report and an estimate of required work.

Do not let a seller’s promise to repair remove the need for evidence. If a repair is agreed, obtain the scope, parts, workshop details and a follow-up inspection. A vehicle that cannot be safely road-tested should be assessed at a workshop rather than driven on public roads.
9. Make the buying decision
Proceed only when the evidence is coherent
A sensible purchase decision requires consistent identity and mileage records, no unresolved safety symptom, acceptable tyre and body condition, and a professional opinion on anything the checklist cannot establish. Record defects separately as cosmetic, maintenance-related or safety-critical so that a low asking price does not disguise a high-risk fault.
Know what this checklist cannot prove
A walk-around cannot certify internal engine wear, transmission health, crash structure, electrical-system integrity or future reliability. The manufacturer’s documents provide inspection points and service intervals, not a used-car defect ranking or inspection outcome statistics. Those questions belong to an examination of the individual TUV300 by a qualified mechanic.
