In Kelley Blue Book’s 2026 comparison, both seat up to seven and use a 110.8-inch wheelbase, but the Santa Fe’s listed gasoline configuration makes more power and tows more, while the Sorento uses less fuel and offers more cargo room behind the second row. Actual used-car condition, warranty eligibility and local price can outweigh those paper differences.
The figures below are tied to the specific configurations and model years identified by the sources. Hybrid, plug-in hybrid and other engines can have different output, economy, cargo layouts and towing ratings.

What the comparison can—and cannot—tell you
A used-car comparison is only useful when the vehicles are matched fairly. A 2026 Santa Fe with a turbocharged gasoline engine is not directly comparable with a 2022 Sorento hybrid, nor is a high-mileage base trim equivalent to a newer, well-maintained upper trim. Start with the listing’s model year, trim, engine, transmission and drivetrain, then verify the vehicle identification number (VIN), service history and recall status.
Kelley Blue Book’s 2026 comparison is a reference point rather than a specification sheet for every Sorento and Santa Fe. It presents popular powertrain examples and measurements for the configurations shown. The source also notes that used values vary with mileage, condition and location; it does not provide a universal used price or a reliability ranking.

At-a-glance: the 2026 gasoline configurations shown by Kelley Blue Book
The table uses the popular powertrain examples in Kelley Blue Book’s 2026 comparison. Do not apply these numbers to a hybrid, plug-in hybrid, different engine, different drivetrain or another model year without checking that vehicle’s own specifications.

Powertrain, towing and fuel economy
Santa Fe: more output in the cited gasoline example
The Santa Fe configuration listed by Kelley Blue Book uses a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 277 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. Its listed towing capacity is 3,500 pounds, and its fuel-economy figures are 20 mpg city, 29 highway and 24 combined. That combination may suit a buyer who regularly carries a full load or needs the higher published tow rating, provided the exact used vehicle has the same engine, drivetrain and factory equipment.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Sorento: lower output but better listed economy
The Sorento example uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder rated at 191 horsepower and 181 lb-ft. Kelley Blue Book lists 2,000 pounds of towing capacity and 23 city/31 highway/26 combined mpg for that configuration. The lower rating does not automatically make every Sorento unsuitable for towing; it means you must compare the vehicle’s exact tow rating with the trailer’s loaded weight, tongue weight and required equipment.
Do not transfer gasoline figures to electrified models
Both model lines have offered hybrid or plug-in-hybrid variants in some years and trims. Their engines, electric motors, transmissions, battery packaging, fuel economy and tow ratings can differ from the gasoline examples above. Confirm the exact powertrain on the window sticker, VIN record and owner’s manual before estimating fuel costs or towing ability.
Drivetrain matters as much as engine output
Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive can carry different ratings, economy figures and equipment requirements. When comparing two listings, record the drivetrain beside the engine and trim. A seller’s generic model description is not enough evidence for a towing or fuel-economy decision.

Transmission and recall checks for Santa Fe shoppers
The transmission detail is particularly year-specific. Kelley Blue Book says Hyundai replaced the 2026 Santa Fe’s standard-engine eight-speed dual-clutch transmission with an eight-speed torque-converter automatic. The same source reports that the earlier dual-clutch transmission led to a recall requiring new transmissions in certain Santa Fe vehicles.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This does not mean every Santa Fe had the defect or that every vehicle was recalled. Treat it as a VIN-level verification task:
- Write down the exact model year, engine and drivetrain from the listing and vehicle.
- Run the VIN through the manufacturer’s recall lookup and obtain a current vehicle-history report.
- Ask the seller for the recall notice, repair order or dealer invoice showing what was done and when.
- Confirm that any replacement transmission, software update or related repair is marked complete rather than merely scheduled.
- During a test drive, note delayed engagement, harsh shifts, warning lights or limp-mode behavior, and have a qualified technician scan the vehicle before purchase.
A clean-looking vehicle with no dashboard warning can still have an open campaign, while a completed repair can make the recall history materially different from an unrepaired example. Keep the paperwork with the purchase records.
Passenger space and cargo: choose for how your family actually travels
Seven seats do not guarantee seven-adult comfort
Both vehicles are listed for up to seven passengers in the cited comparison. The Santa Fe has slightly more measured third-row legroom, but the difference on paper should be tested with the people who will use the row. Check whether adults can sit without knees against the second-row seat, whether children can climb through the access opening and whether a child seat blocks the route.
When the third row is occupied
The Santa Fe is listed with 14.6 cubic feet behind the last row, compared with 12.6 cubic feet for the Sorento. Two cubic feet can determine whether a stroller, grocery load or weekend bags fit without stacking above the seatback. Bring the largest everyday items and measure the opening, not just the floor.
When the third row is folded
Behind the second row, the Sorento is listed with 45.0 cubic feet versus 40.5 cubic feet for the Santa Fe. That makes the Sorento the stronger paper fit for buyers who normally carry five people and use the third row only occasionally. Fold and unfold every section during the visit; verify that head restraints, cargo covers and seat belts store correctly.

Practical fit checks
- Install the actual child seats, including front-seat clearance for rear-facing seats.
- Measure the liftgate opening for coolers, mobility equipment or large boxes.
- Check whether the third-row seats split in the way your cargo routine requires.
- Look for a usable under-floor compartment and confirm whether a spare tire occupies it.
- Test second-row slide and tilt functions with the third row occupied.
Warranty coverage on a used vehicle
Hyundai’s 2025 comparison with the Sorento explains an important ownership distinction: the 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty applies to the original owner. Subsequent owners receive powertrain coverage under the five-year/60,000-mile new-vehicle limited warranty, subject to exclusions. The relevant clock generally depends on the vehicle’s in-service date and mileage, so a used buyer should not assume the headline 10-year term transfers.
For any Santa Fe, request the warranty booklet, in-service date, odometer reading and VIN-based eligibility decision. Ask a Hyundai dealer to document what remains, including any exclusions or maintenance requirements.
The material used for this comparison does not establish Kia’s transfer terms for every used Sorento, trim or model year. Do not assume that a new-car warranty headline remains intact after a change of ownership. Obtain Kia’s written, VIN-specific answer and compare it with the vehicle’s service records.
How to compare used asking prices without a misleading bargain
No single price applies to all used Sorentos or Santa Fes. Kelley Blue Book notes that values vary with mileage, condition and location, and the comparison’s displayed new-car prices are not used-vehicle valuations. Build a local comparison using vehicles that match on:
- Model year and trim level
- Gasoline, hybrid or plug-in-hybrid powertrain
- Front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive
- Mileage band and number of previous owners
- Accident, flood, salvage and title history
- Maintenance documentation and tire/brake condition
- Open or completed recalls
- Dealer, private-party or certified program status
Use listings available in your area on the same date, then budget for an independent inspection, taxes, registration, financing and immediate maintenance. A lower sticker price can disappear if the vehicle needs tires, brakes, fluids or a transmission repair. Conversely, a higher-priced example with complete records and a documented recall repair may present less immediate uncertainty, but that judgment requires inspecting the specific vehicle.
A buyer’s step-by-step process
1. Define the job
Write down the number of passengers, frequency of third-row use, typical cargo, trailer weight, winter-road needs and acceptable fuel economy. This prevents a published horsepower or cargo figure from dominating a decision that is really about seat access or luggage.

2. Build a like-for-like shortlist
Collect at least three local listings with the same model year, trim, engine and drivetrain. Record VIN, mileage, asking price, title status, service records and advertised equipment. Separate gasoline and electrified vehicles into different groups.

Use the VIN, window sticker and owner’s manual to confirm engine, transmission, drivetrain, seating configuration and towing rating. Resolve any conflict between the seller’s description and the vehicle documentation before arranging a purchase inspection.
4. Check recalls and warranty
Run the VIN through the relevant manufacturer system, request proof of completed campaigns and obtain written warranty eligibility. For a Santa Fe potentially affected by the earlier dual-clutch issue, require documentation rather than relying on a seller’s verbal assurance.
5. Inspect and drive
Have an independent technician inspect the engine, transmission, cooling system, suspension, brakes, tires, underbody, electronics and evidence of water damage. Test cold start, highway merging, stop-and-go operation, reversing, seat mechanisms, climate controls and all warning-light behavior.
6. Recalculate the total cost
Add purchase taxes and fees, insurance, inspection, near-term maintenance and any accessories required for your use. Compare that total with other verified examples, not with a national average that may describe a different year or condition.

Which one fits common buyer priorities?
Choose the Santa Fe configuration when towing and loaded performance lead
In the cited 2026 gasoline comparison, the Santa Fe has 277 hp, 311 lb-ft and a 3,500-pound listed tow rating versus the Sorento example’s 191 hp, 181 lb-ft and 2,000 pounds. That numerical advantage matters only if the candidate vehicle has the same powertrain and its tow rating covers your fully loaded trailer. Confirm hitch, wiring, brakes and payload requirements separately.
Choose the Sorento configuration when second-row cargo volume and economy lead
The cited Sorento example is listed at 26 combined mpg versus 24 for the Santa Fe and offers 45.0 cubic feet behind the second row versus 40.5. Buyers who usually carry five passengers and gear may value that layout more than maximum third-row cargo.
Prioritize the Santa Fe when third-row access is the deciding factor
The comparison gives the Santa Fe slightly more third-row legroom and 14.6 cubic feet behind the last row. Test with your actual passengers because measured differences do not capture seat cushioning, step-in height or the movement required to reach the row.
Let condition and documentation break a close tie
If two vehicles meet your space and performance needs, favor the one with a verifiable maintenance trail, clean title, completed recalls, consistent mileage records and a satisfactory independent inspection. The available sources do not support declaring either model inherently more reliable or cheaper to own.
Inspection checklist for either SUV
- Identity: VIN on the dashboard, door label, title and service invoices must match.
- Powertrain: Confirm the engine and transmission code, inspect for leaks and scan for stored diagnostic trouble codes.
- Transmission: Check engagement, shift quality and warning messages; demand Santa Fe recall documentation when applicable.
- Maintenance: Look for dated oil, coolant, brake, tire and scheduled-service records rather than an undated “serviced” claim.
- Structure: Inspect panel gaps, paint overspray, underbody damage and signs of flood exposure.
- Safety: Test airbags indicators, seat belts, cameras, sensors, adaptive systems and child-seat anchors.
- Interior: Operate every seat, latch, window, climate zone, infotainment control and liftgate.
- Road test: Drive from cold start through city, highway and parking maneuvers; note vibration, pulling, noise and overheating.
- Documents: Obtain title, buyer’s order, recall result, warranty decision and inspection report before paying.
Questions to ask the seller
- What are the exact model year, trim, engine and drivetrain?
- Can I see the VIN and the service invoices?
- Has the vehicle had any transmission replacement, software update or recall repair?
- How many owners has it had, and was it used for towing, ride-hailing or commercial work?
- Are there warning lights, known leaks, modified wiring or missing factory parts?
- Will you allow an independent pre-purchase inspection?
- Which warranty coverage is confirmed in writing for this VIN and in-service date?
Bottom line for a used Sorento-versus-Santa Fe decision
The Santa Fe is the stronger paper choice in the cited 2026 gasoline configurations for horsepower, torque, listed towing and third-row cargo, while the Sorento is listed with better fuel economy and more cargo room behind the second row. Those advantages are not universal across model years, trims or electrified versions. Match the exact vehicle to your passenger, cargo and towing needs, verify recalls and transferable warranty coverage by VIN, and let an independent inspection and local, like-for-like pricing determine which used SUV is the safer purchase.
