For U.S.-market cars, give special attention to the 2025 SC336 piston-ring campaign affecting certain 2021–2023 Seltos with the 2.0L Nu MPI engine.
A clean advertisement or a “0 unrepaired recalls” result is not enough. The VIN, paperwork, mechanical condition and written all-in deal must agree.

Use this pre-payment standard
Do not treat a used Seltos as ready to buy until each item below is documented. If the seller refuses any of these checks, pause the transaction rather than relying on a verbal promise.

1. Identify the exact Seltos before researching it
Write down the vehicle’s 17-character VIN, model year, trim, engine, transmission, odometer reading, registration jurisdiction and seller type. Photograph the VIN plate and compare it with the VIN printed on the title and registration. A mismatch is a stop-and-verify issue, not a clerical detail.

Record the build date if it is available on the vehicle label or through a Kia dealer. Seltos specifications, engine choices, recalls, warranty transfer rules and consumer protections vary by country. U.S. recall information cannot automatically be applied to an imported or non-U.S.-market vehicle.
2. Run a VIN-specific recall check
Enter the full VIN in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall lookup and check the Kia owner portal or ask a Kia dealer to search the same VIN. NHTSA describes the VIN as a unique 17-character identifier and reports unrepaired recalls associated with that vehicle. Save or print the result and note the date of the search.
A result showing “0 unrepaired recalls associated with this VIN” is useful, but it is not proof that every campaign is absent. NHTSA says repaired recalls, some newly announced recalls, non-safety campaigns and international recalls may not appear in the VIN result. Ask Kia specifically about completed campaigns, service actions and market-specific notices.
How to resolve an open campaign
- Ask the seller for the campaign number, notice and dealer repair order.
- Call a Kia dealer with the VIN and confirm whether the remedy was completed, pending parts or not applicable.
- Request the completion record in writing, including the repair date and mileage.
- Do not pay a nonrefundable deposit until you know who will perform an outstanding repair and who will pay for it.
3. Give 2021–2023 2.0L cars a focused SC336 check
For the U.S. market, Kia America’s SC336 campaign applies to certain 2021–2023 Seltos vehicles equipped with the 2.0L Nu MPI engine and built from July 2, 2020, through July 1, 2022. Kia reports 53,635 Seltos vehicles in the approximately 137,256-vehicle combined campaign population. Applicability is determined by VIN, engine and build details, so a model year alone cannot establish whether a car is included.
Kia’s March 31, 2025, SC336 Q&A attributes the condition to a supplier quality deviation: “the piston oil ring in the subject vehicles may, over time, damage the surface of the cylinder wall.” The resulting damage can increase oil consumption and produce abnormal engine noise or an oil-pressure warning. Continued driving can lead to engine damage or seizure and, in limited cases, fire.

What the remedy should show
According to Kia’s campaign description, a dealer inspects the engine, installs PNSS software and replaces the engine when the inspection requires it. Ask for both the campaign completion record and any engine-replacement invoice. A seller’s statement that “the engine was done” is not a substitute for a VIN-linked repair order.
What to look for during your inspection
- Oil below the correct level or evidence that the seller recently topped it up.
- Unexplained oil consumption between service intervals.
- Knocking, ticking or other abnormal noise on a cold start and at operating temperature.
- An oil-pressure warning, check-engine light or stored diagnostic code.
- Freshly cleaned oil residue, leaks or an engine bay that appears unusually detailed around the inspection area.
An unresolved SC336 campaign, unexplained oil use or an oil-pressure warning should stop the purchase until a Kia dealer documents the condition and remedy.

Obtain a vehicle-history report in your own name or have the seller provide the complete report for you to review. Consumer.gov says such a report can show ownership, recorded mileage, accidents and flood damage. Use it as a lead sheet, then compare every entry with the title, service invoices and the car itself.
Title and identity checks
- Confirm that the seller’s name and address are consistent with the title or that the dealership has legal authority to sell the vehicle.
- Check for salvage, rebuilt, flood, fire, lemon-law or other branded-title notation applicable in your jurisdiction.
- Compare mileage on the title, inspection stickers, service invoices, history report and dashboard.
- Ask why the vehicle changed owners and whether it was used commercially, as a rental or in a fleet.
- Look for gaps that coincide with an accident, auction sale or long period of registration in a flood-affected area.
History reports are not complete records of every repair. A plausible report does not eliminate the need to inspect paint thickness, panel alignment, underbody damage, corrosion, restraints and water intrusion.
5. Read the maintenance records for continuity
Request dated invoices, not just a stamped booklet. Match the work to the correct model year, engine and transmission schedule. Regular oil and filter service is especially important when evaluating a 2.0L vehicle, but do not infer that an oil change alone proves the SC336 issue was addressed.

Records worth finding
- Routine engine-oil and filter services with mileage and oil specification.
- Brake-pad, rotor and brake-fluid work.
- Tire replacement, rotations and alignment measurements.
- Coolant and other fluid service, with the product and date identified.
- Battery replacement and charging-system diagnosis.
- Recall and campaign work, including software updates and engine replacement if applicable.
Missing records do not prove abuse, but they increase uncertainty. Price that uncertainty only after an independent inspection; do not assume a low price compensates for unknown maintenance.
6. Commission an independent inspection
Use a mechanic who is independent of the seller and ask for a written report with photographs, measured readings and a list of urgent, soon-needed and cosmetic items. Arrange to see the vehicle cold, before it has been started for your arrival. If the seller will not permit an independent inspection, walk away.
Engine, oil and cooling system
- Check the oil level and condition before starting the engine; note fuel smell, metal particles, sludge or a level that is unexpectedly high or low.
- Listen during a cold start, idle, light acceleration and hot restart for knocking, ticking, rattles or belt noise.
- Scan for current, pending and history diagnostic codes, even if no warning light is illuminated.
- Inspect the engine, oil pan, transmission case, hoses, radiator and condenser for wetness, residue, damaged fins or recent cleaning.
- Verify coolant level and condition, and look for overheating evidence or a cooling fan that does not operate normally.
Steering, alignment and suspension
Kia’s inspection themes include steering looseness, vibration and straight tracking. On a level road, the Seltos should not continually pull, wander or require constant correction. Inspect tie-rod and suspension joints, bushings, struts, springs and the chassis for impact damage, uneven wear or corrosion. A steering wheel that is off-center while the car travels straight can indicate alignment work or prior collision repair.
Brakes and parking brake
- Apply the brake progressively at low and moderate speeds; the pedal should be firm and predictable.
- Check for pulsation, grinding, squealing, pulling, vibration or a brake warning light.
- Test the parking brake on a safe incline or as the mechanic recommends.
- Inspect pad and rotor thickness, brake lines and evidence of fluid leaks.
Transmission and driveline
Test every forward and reverse gear, including cold engagement, stop-and-go operation, acceleration and a steady cruise. Note delayed engagement, harsh shifts, slipping, shuddering, unusual whine or a transmission warning. Check for leaks under the transmission and around driveshafts or axle seals. The correct behavior depends on the Seltos engine and transmission combination, so compare the result with the vehicle’s exact service information rather than a different trim.
Tires, wheels and underbody
Record the tire brand, size, date code, tread depth and wear pattern. Uneven inner-edge wear can reveal alignment or suspension problems that a visual walk-around misses. Check all wheels for bends or cracks, inspect the spare or tire-mobility kit, and verify that the jack and tools are present. Look underneath for bent shields, fresh undercoating, fluid stains, rust and evidence of off-road or flood damage.

Lights, belts, hoses and chassis details
Check exterior lights, warning indicators, seat-belt operation, wiper and washer systems, belts, hoses, seals, gaskets, suspension mounts and chassis fasteners. Kia’s maintenance guidance also calls for checking tire inflation and blockage at the radiator or condenser. A written inspection should distinguish a routine service item from a safety-critical defect.
7. Perform a representative test drive
Drive long enough to reach normal operating temperature and include the conditions you actually face: a cold start, urban stops, a smooth higher-speed road, turns, a hill and parking maneuvers. Keep the radio off while listening for mechanical sounds, and ask the passenger to observe warning lights and noises.
- Before moving, confirm that all warning lights illuminate during the bulb check and then go out as expected.
- Test steering effort, straight tracking and brake feel at low speed in a safe area.
- Accelerate gradually and firmly; note hesitation, surging, vibration, abnormal noise or warning messages.
- Use reverse, parking sensors and cameras where fitted, checking for delayed engagement or false alerts.
- At cruise speed, feel for wheel, seat or pedal vibration and listen for wind, tire, drivetrain or suspension noise.
- Stop, switch off and restart the engine while hot. Recheck the instrument panel and look beneath the car for fresh leaks.
Record warning lights before and after the drive. A seller who clears codes immediately before your visit may have reset the evidence without fixing the cause; a scan and written inspection are more reliable than the dashboard alone.

Feature availability is trim- and market-specific. Compare the car with its original window sticker or a VIN build sheet, then operate each listed feature yourself.
- Climate control, heater, air conditioner and fan speeds.
- Power windows, locks, mirrors, seats and heated seats where fitted.
- Headlamps, indicators, interior lights, wipers and washers.
- Infotainment, navigation, Bluetooth, USB ports and steering-wheel controls.
- Rear-view camera, parking sensors and driver-assistance alerts.
- Keyless entry, push-button start and both supplied keys.
- Spare wheel or tire-mobility kit, jack, tools and cargo-area hardware.
Do not accept “that is how this trim works” without checking the build sheet. Missing equipment can affect both safety and value.

9. Compare two Seltos vehicles on evidence, not model year alone
There is no reliable universal “best year” or single engine to choose without the vehicle’s market, trim, mileage, condition and price. When two cars are available, rank the evidence in this order:

| Independent inspection | Which car has fewer urgent findings involving oil consumption, leaks, noise, brakes, tires, steering, suspension and electronics? |
| Warranty or certified status | What remains transferable, and is it stated in the written contract rather than promised orally? |
| Total transaction cost | Which vehicle costs less after fees, taxes, registration, immediate repairs and required maintenance? |
A newer car with incomplete records or unresolved mechanical symptoms can be a worse purchase than an older Seltos with a documented history and clean inspection.
10. Get the complete deal in writing
Ask for the all-in amount before signing or paying a deposit. Consumer.gov explains that a dealer’s Buyers Guide identifies major systems and states whether the vehicle is sold as-is or with a warranty. Read the Buyers Guide together with the purchase contract; a separate warranty document may contain exclusions, deductibles, time limits and mileage limits.

- Vehicle identification number, year, trim, mileage and selling entity.
- Title status, lien-release information and required registration documents.
- Itemized selling price, dealer or documentation fees, taxes and registration-related charges.
- Buyers Guide and every warranty, service-contract or “as-is” term.
- Inspection report and written agreement about repairs or recall completion.
- Keys, manuals, service records and promised accessories.
Make any deposit conditional on a satisfactory independent inspection and documented completion of applicable recall work. Keep copies of the signed documents and payment receipt.
Walk-away triggers
Pause payment or leave when any of these conditions occurs:
- The seller will not provide the VIN, title or a verifiable ownership explanation.
- The seller blocks an independent inspection or insists on a mechanic chosen by the seller.
- An applicable safety campaign is open, or the seller cannot explain its status.
- The engine shows an oil-pressure warning, abnormal knocking or unexplained oil consumption.
- Mileage, title, registration and history records conflict.
- Flood, salvage or major collision evidence is undisclosed or poorly repaired.
- The seller refuses to state the all-in price and warranty or “as-is” terms in writing.
Limits of the available evidence
The SC336 population, dates and remedy described above come from Kia America’s U.S. campaign information and should not be generalized to every country or every Seltos engine. NHTSA’s VIN tool has documented omissions, and Kia’s online maintenance guidance is a general reference rather than a replacement for the exact market- and model-year manual.
No single price, reliability score or universal year recommendation can be responsibly given without location, trim, mileage, condition, inspection findings and asking price. The purchase decision should rest on the individual VIN, documented condition and written terms.
