The safer choice depends on the exact variant, whether the CNG system is factory-fitted or retrofitted, the car’s paperwork and condition, access to fuel on your regular routes, and how many kilometres you drive each year. A factory bi-fuel Xcent Prime can reduce fuel spending where CNG is convenient, while a petrol car avoids CNG availability and approval questions. Do not assume a fixed payback period from advertised mileage figures.
The short answer
For occasional or low-distance use, irregular routes, or areas with limited CNG stations, a well-maintained petrol Xcent is usually the simpler ownership proposition. You can refuel at ordinary petrol stations, and the documented petrol versions include manual and automatic configurations.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
A factory bi-fuel Xcent Prime deserves consideration when you drive enough kilometres to make fuel prices important, have dependable CNG access on normal routes, and can verify the fuel system and registration. The documented factory bi-fuel configuration is a manual. Hyundai lists lower peak output in CNG mode than in petrol mode, so buyers who regularly carry passengers, climb hills, or use motorways should test the actual car rather than relying on the badge.

Retrofitted cars require a separate legal and technical check. A Government of India notification from 2022 covers retrofitment of CNG or LPG kits on BS-VI gasoline vehicles and replacement of diesel engines with CNG or LPG engines in BS-VI vehicles below 3.5 tonnes. That notice does not establish that an older Xcent is eligible. The individual vehicle’s emissions category, approved kit, fitment and registration endorsement must be verified.

Which Xcent petrol and CNG versions actually exist?
Original Xcent range
Hyundai launched the Xcent in India in 2014. Autocar India’s used-Xcent guide describes the model as discontinued and says its used-market demand is limited. The same guide says the CNG option was offered only for the fleet market. That matters because a listing described simply as a private-owner Xcent CNG may not tell you whether the car is a documented factory fleet variant, a later conversion, or an incorrectly advertised petrol car.
Xcent Prime factory specifications
Hyundai Motor India’s 2020 Xcent Prime brochure lists two relevant 1.2-litre manual configurations:
| Configuration | Transmission listed | Stated output | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol | Manual | 83 PS | Manufacturer-listed peak output |
| Bi-fuel petrol-CNG, petrol mode | Manual | 81.6 PS | Manufacturer-listed output when running on petrol |
| Bi-fuel petrol-CNG, CNG mode | Manual | 66.3 PS | Manufacturer-listed output when running on CNG |
The brochure is evidence for Xcent Prime specifications, not proof that every Xcent carrying a CNG badge has a factory system. If a seller presents an automatic CNG Xcent, ask for the exact variant documentation: the factory bi-fuel configuration listed in the brochure is manual. An automatic Xcent may be a petrol car, a converted car, or a listing error.

Power and drivability
Hyundai lists 83 PS for the petrol engine. For the bi-fuel engine, it lists 81.6 PS in petrol mode and 66.3 PS in CNG mode. On paper, the CNG-mode figure is 15.3 PS lower than the petrol engine figure. That is a stated peak-output difference, not a quantified acceleration test.
No supplied specification gives 0–100 km/h times, overtaking measurements, hill-climb results, or loaded-car performance. Treat the output gap as a reason to test the car under your normal conditions, not as proof that every CNG Xcent will feel unacceptable. During a drive, include a passenger or luggage load you commonly carry, use the routes where you need to merge or overtake, and compare petrol and CNG modes if the system allows a safe changeover.

Fuel economy
Autocar India reported Hyundai-claimed petrol economy of 20.14 km/l for the manual and 17.36 km/l for the automatic. These are Hyundai claims, not guaranteed consumption and not independent real-world tests. They also describe petrol versions; they do not provide a directly comparable real-world CNG result.
| Figure | Value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Petrol manual economy | 20.14 km/l | Hyundai-claimed figure reported by Autocar India |
| Petrol automatic economy | 17.36 km/l | Hyundai-claimed figure reported by Autocar India |
| CNG economy | Not stated | No directly comparable real-world figure is established |
Do not calculate a CNG break-even distance by pairing the petrol claims with an assumed CNG economy. Actual fuel cost changes with traffic, tyre pressures, load, driving style, vehicle condition, local fuel prices and whether CNG is available when you need it.
Factory CNG or retrofit? Establish the car’s identity first
Factory-fitted bi-fuel car
A factory car should have a consistent identity across the vehicle, invoices or delivery records where available, the registration certificate and service documentation. The Xcent Prime brochure’s factory bi-fuel entry is a manual 1.2-litre configuration. Ask the seller to show the fuel type and variant exactly as recorded in the registration certificate, not merely an aftermarket switch or a sticker.
Retrofitted car
A retrofit adds another approval and maintenance trail. The 2022 Government of India notification addresses BS-VI gasoline vehicles and certain diesel-to-gas conversions below 3.5 tonnes, but it does not say that an older Xcent automatically qualifies. Before treating any conversion as legal, establish all of the following with the relevant registering authority and the installer:
- The vehicle’s exact model year and emissions category.
- The kit manufacturer, kit approval and specific fitment for that vehicle.
- Installation records, invoices and any inspection or certification documents.
- Registration-certificate endorsement showing the permitted fuel configuration.
- Whether the tank, lines, valves and other components have the required inspection or replacement records.
If the seller cannot produce a coherent chain of documents, price the car as a compliance risk rather than assuming that a government notification makes the conversion acceptable. A qualified CNG installer or the registering authority should answer questions about a particular vehicle; a generic online listing is not sufficient evidence.

A step-by-step method for comparing two actual cars
1. Record the exact specification
- Write down the model year, Xcent or Xcent Prime designation, engine size, transmission and stated fuel type.
- Photograph the vehicle identification and registration details and compare them with the seller’s advertisement.
- For a CNG car, record whether the documents say factory bi-fuel or show a later alteration.
Do not compare a high-mileage fleet manual with a low-mileage private petrol automatic and call the result a fuel comparison. You are comparing two different vehicles as well as two fuels.

2. Inspect condition and records on equal terms
Use the same inspection standard for both cars. Check cold starting, idle quality, warning lamps, clutch or automatic operation, braking, steering, suspension, air-conditioning, tyres, body repairs and evidence of water damage. Request service invoices and ask what work is due next. The available evidence does not establish a model-specific fault list or prove that either fuel version is inherently more reliable, so the individual car’s condition should carry more weight than fuel folklore.
For CNG, add a fuel-system inspection by a qualified technician. Ask the technician to examine the tank and its mounting, high-pressure lines, shut-off components, regulator, injectors, changeover controls and signs of leakage or poor installation. Obtain written findings and match the equipment to the documents. Do not attempt to diagnose a gas leak yourself.
3. Map your real refuelling routes
List the places you drive in a normal week: home, work, school, clients, family visits and regular intercity routes. Then identify whether a CNG station is available near those routes at the times you travel. The available material does not provide current city-by-city station coverage, so this is a local check you must perform yourself.
Count the inconvenience of a detour, queues, restricted operating hours or a station that is unavailable during a trip. If you would still need petrol frequently because CNG is unreliable on your routes, the theoretical fuel-price advantage may not match your actual use.

4. Build a local fuel-cost estimate
Use measured consumption from the specific car where possible, rather than relying only on brochure figures. Keep a log over several refills and separate petrol and CNG use. A simple annual estimate is:
Annual petrol cost = annual kilometres ÷ observed petrol km/l × local petrol price per litre
For CNG, use the unit shown on your receipts and the car’s observed consumption:
Annual CNG cost = annual kilometres ÷ observed CNG kilometres per unit × local CNG price per unit
Keep the assumptions visible. Include the kilometres you actually expect to drive, not an optimistic target, and use prices from the places where you normally refuel. Add any documented inspection, repair or compliance expense separately. Because no current price set or comparable CNG economy is supplied, a precise payback period would be invented.
5. Test the performance you need
Drive both candidates on the same type of road. Observe low-speed smoothness, gear selection, throttle response, braking and noise. In the CNG car, note the change between petrol and CNG modes under safe conditions and with a realistic load. The 66.3 PS CNG-mode rating indicates less peak output than the petrol ratings, but only your route and load will tell you whether that difference matters.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors6. Compare purchase price after correcting for risk
A cheaper CNG listing is not automatically a bargain if its conversion is undocumented or its fuel-system inspection is overdue. Conversely, a higher-priced factory car is not automatically better if it has poor service history or heavy fleet use. Compare each car’s price alongside condition, ownership records, fuel-system provenance, remaining documentation work and expected repairs.

Who should choose petrol?
Choose petrol when simplicity and flexibility dominate
- Your annual distance is modest or unpredictable, so fuel savings would be small.
- Your ordinary routes do not have dependable CNG access.
- You need an automatic Xcent; the documented Xcent Prime factory bi-fuel configuration is manual.
- You prefer to avoid questions about retrofit approval, kit history or registration endorsement.
- You regularly drive with heavy loads, on steep roads or at motorway speeds and prefer the listed petrol output, subject to a test drive.
A petrol car still requires a careful used-car inspection. The fuel type cannot compensate for neglected maintenance, accident damage or an inflated asking price.
Who should choose factory CNG?
Choose a documented bi-fuel car when the operating pattern supports it
- You drive enough predictable kilometres for fuel cost to matter materially.
- CNG stations are convenient on both daily and longer routes.
- The car is identified consistently as a factory bi-fuel model, or a retrofit has complete approval and registration records.
- You accept a manual transmission and have tested the car’s CNG-mode performance with your normal load.
- The vehicle’s condition and service history are at least as strong as the petrol alternative.
The benefit is conditional, not guaranteed. CNG prices, station access, real consumption and repair needs vary by location and vehicle. Calculate using your own logs before making an offer.
Red flags that should stop or slow a purchase
- The advertisement says CNG but the registration certificate lists only petrol, with no alteration endorsement.
- The seller cannot explain whether the system is factory-fitted or retrofitted.
- The kit brand, installation invoice or inspection records are missing.
- The vehicle is advertised as an automatic factory CNG Xcent without documentation matching the brochure’s manual bi-fuel configuration.
- The seller quotes brochure petrol economy as a guaranteed result or promises a fixed fuel-cost payback.
- The car cannot demonstrate clean operation in both fuel modes, or warning lamps appear during the test drive.
- The seller refuses an independent inspection of the fuel system and vehicle condition.
Questions to ask the seller
- What is the exact model year, variant and transmission?
- Is the CNG system factory-fitted or installed later?
- What fuel type and alteration, if any, appear on the registration certificate?
- Which installer fitted the kit, and where are the approval and installation records?
- Can I see service invoices and fuel-system inspection documents?
- Has the car spent most of its life in fleet service, and can that history be documented?
- Can I arrange an independent inspection and a same-route test drive?
- What work is due immediately after purchase?
Written answers are useful, but documents and an inspection matter more than assurances.
A practical decision matrix
| Your situation | Starting preference | Condition that could change the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Low annual kilometres, few CNG stations | Petrol | A clearly documented factory CNG car at a substantially better total price, with convenient refuelling |
| High, predictable kilometres and nearby CNG | Factory bi-fuel CNG | Poor condition, missing records or CNG-mode performance that does not suit your routes |
| Automatic transmission required | Petrol candidate | A specific CNG car with fully verified non-factory conversion and approval, subject to inspection |
| Retrofit paperwork incomplete | Do not buy until verified | Complete authority and installer documentation, plus a clean technical inspection |
| Two cars with similar price and condition | Use your fuel-access and annual-kilometre calculation | Choose the one with lower compliance and repair uncertainty |
What the evidence does not prove
The available specifications do not prove that one fuel version lasts longer, has fewer failures, or costs less to maintain. They also do not provide current petrol and CNG prices, city-level station coverage, a real-world CNG economy figure, a standardized acceleration test or a guaranteed break-even distance. Those questions must be answered for the specific car, location and driving pattern.
Likewise, the fact that Autocar India describes CNG as a fleet-market offering does not mean every CNG Xcent is unsuitable for private use. It means you should investigate its original application and paperwork. Hyundai’s brochure confirms a factory bi-fuel Xcent Prime configuration, but it does not convert every used Xcent listing into a factory CNG car.
Final buying rule
Buy the petrol Xcent when it is the better-documented, better-maintained car and CNG access is uncertain. Buy the factory bi-fuel Xcent Prime only when its identity is documented, the manual transmission suits you, CNG is convenient on your real routes, and the car performs acceptably in CNG mode. Treat an undocumented retrofit as a separate risk category, not as an equivalent alternative. The best choice is the car whose condition, legal status, fuel access and annual-cost assumptions you can verify before payment.
