Use the checklist below in that order, then pay an independent mechanic to inspect the underside and provide a written estimate. A visual check and short drive can identify warning signs, but cannot certify the car’s mechanical condition.
1. Confirm the car and seller before inspecting it

Complete the transfer, not just a private receipt
For a normal sale, submit Forms 29 and 30 through the applicable registering authority process. If the car is moving between jurisdictions, check whether an NOC is required. Keep signed copies of the sale agreement or receipt, payment evidence and every submission acknowledgement. A private receipt proves a transaction between two people; it does not by itself complete government ownership transfer. Confirm that the RC is eventually issued or updated in the buyer’s name.
Resolve finance and jurisdiction issues first
An RC hypothecation entry means a financier’s interest may still exist. Obtain the financier’s release or NOC and follow the registration-office procedure before paying the balance or assuming the car is free of encumbrance. Check the live instructions of the relevant state transport portal or RTO because forms, fees and supporting documents can change with the registration circumstances.
3. Cold-start engine and cooling-system checklist
Observe the first start
- Check that the engine is cold by touching a metal part away from belts and fans, or ask how long it has been parked.
- Watch whether it starts promptly without extended cranking or repeated throttle input.
- After starting, confirm that the idle settles rather than surging, stalling or shaking continuously.
- Observe the instrument cluster. Warning lamps should perform their normal self-check and then go out; a lamp that remains on needs diagnosis before purchase.
- Listen for persistent knocking, rattling, tapping or belt noise. A brief start-up sound is not enough to identify a fault, so have an experienced mechanic investigate any noise that continues.
- Look at the exhaust after the engine has settled. Unusual blue, dense white or persistent black smoke is a reason to stop and obtain a professional diagnosis rather than guessing at the cause.
Check fluids and visible leaks safely
With the engine off and at a safe temperature, inspect engine-oil and coolant levels using the procedure in the applicable owner’s manual. Do not remove a pressurised radiator or coolant cap while hot. Look for wetness or fresh residue around the engine, sump, radiator, hoses, connections and the ground beneath the parked car. Oil floating in coolant, coolant contamination in oil, repeated coolant loss or evidence of overheating requires a mechanic’s assessment.

Examine hoses, clamps, the radiator area and accessible wiring for cracking, swelling, amateur repairs or fresh cleaning that could conceal a leak. Check that the cooling fan operates when the vehicle reaches operating temperature, but keep hands, clothing and tools away from moving parts.
Use the correct fluid specification
Hyundai India’s current fluid table lists, for a Santro 1.1 L, manual-transmission oil of API GL-4 SAE 75W85 with a stated capacity of 2.45 litres and automatic-transmission fluid identified as ATF MX4 with a stated capacity of 5.2 litres. That table does not establish that those quantities or grades apply to every Santro Xing year or variant. Confirm the exact specification and fill procedure in the vehicle’s manual or with Hyundai service personnel before any fluid change.
4. Clutch and gearbox inspection
Pedal and stationary checks
- Press the clutch repeatedly. The pedal should move consistently, return fully and not feel sticky, excessively heavy or suddenly different from one stroke to the next.
- Ask the mechanic to measure or inspect clutch-pedal free play according to the applicable service procedure.
- With the engine running, select reverse and each forward gear while stationary. Excessive resistance, grinding or a gear that cannot be selected smoothly needs diagnosis.
Road-test for slip, drag and shudder
On a quiet, legal road, accelerate gently in a higher gear from low engine speed. If engine speed rises without a matching increase in road speed, the clutch may be slipping. A car that creeps with the clutch fully depressed suggests drag. Shudder when moving away, a burning smell or abnormal release noise also warrants inspection. These observations do not identify whether the clutch disc, pressure plate, release mechanism, cable or engine/gearbox mounts are responsible.

Select every gear during the drive, including reverse. Note baulking, grinding, a gear that jumps out, or a lever that feels unusually loose. Do not perform an aggressive hill-hold or prolonged half-clutch test; it can damage the car and create a hazard. Let a mechanic determine the failed component and obtain a repair estimate.

5. Brake-system checks before and during the drive
Inspect the hydraulic system first
Check the brake-fluid reservoir for a level below its marked range and look for wetness around the master cylinder, lines, hoses, calipers and rear-brake area. A soft pedal, a pedal that sinks while held, or any visible leak is a reason not to drive the car on public roads. Hyundai India’s current maintenance guidance refers to DOT 4 and warns against mixing DOT 3 and DOT 4 brake or clutch fluids, but this is not a model-year-specific Santro Xing specification; use the exact manual or service instruction for fluid work.
Test braking at low speed
- In a safe, open area, apply the brakes progressively from low speed.
- Check that the car stops in a straight line without a strong pull.
- Notice severe vibration through the pedal or steering wheel, scraping or persistent grinding noises, and any delay before braking begins.
- Apply and release the parking brake. It should hold the vehicle securely and release fully without binding.
Have a mechanic remove the wheels or use suitable access to inspect front pads and discs, rear shoes and drums, hoses and leakage. Looking through a wheel opening or relying on one stop cannot establish remaining friction-material life.

6. Road test beyond the powertrain
Drive long enough for the temperature gauge to reach its normal range. Watch for overheating, a temperature gauge that rises abnormally, coolant smell, warning lamps or a fan that never appears to operate. Test steering response, straight-line tracking and suspension over modest imperfections. Listen for clunks over bumps and humming that changes with speed. Check tire wear across the tread, not just tread depth: uneven shoulders or a saw-tooth pattern can indicate alignment, suspension or accident damage.
Use the mirrors and a flashlight to inspect visible underbody areas for fresh welds, severe corrosion, bent rails, fluid drips or damaged exhaust components. An optional LED inspection mirror can help view obstructed spaces, but it is not a substitute for a lift or proper underbody access.
7. Service history and mileage consistency
Request invoices, scheduled-service entries and repair bills rather than relying on a verbal mileage claim. Compare odometer readings and dates across insurance records, service invoices, inspection reports and previous registration paperwork. Hyundai’s warranty information excludes odometer tampering and asks owners to retain maintenance records; that policy is a reason to scrutinize an incomplete or contradictory paper trail, not proof that a particular car has been tampered with.

Look for evidence of regular oil, coolant, brake and transmission maintenance, but do not infer that a stamped booklet proves every service was completed. Ask what work is due immediately and request written estimates for tyres, brakes, clutch, suspension or cooling repairs identified during inspection.
8. Independent inspection and decision rules
Use a written mechanical assessment
Arrange an inspection by a qualified, independent mechanic who can access the underside. Give the mechanic the car’s exact year, fuel and transmission details and ask for photographs or written notes covering leaks, structural condition, engine operation, clutch, gearbox, brakes, suspension, tyres and electrical warning lights. A seller-selected inspection can still be useful, but an independent report reduces the chance that a conflict of interest hides defects.
Separate safety faults from negotiable maintenance
- Do not drive or complete payment: braking failure, a major fluid leak, overheating, a persistent warning lamp, structural damage or identity/document mismatch.
- Pause for a professional estimate: clutch slip, gear grinding, severe smoke, repeated coolant loss, low brake fluid, a sinking pedal or suspected hypothecation.
- Potentially routine items: aged tyres, worn wiper blades, minor cosmetic damage or a service due soon, provided the mechanic confirms there is no associated safety or structural problem.
No published failure rate, universal repair cost or reliability percentage is established here. Decide between cars using the inspection report, documented maintenance, mileage consistency and the near-term repair budget rather than a generic ranking of Santro Xing model years.
