Petrol is the safer default for a used Hyundai Grand i10 when you want stronger published output, simpler refuelling and a wider choice of cars. A factory CNG car can be the better buy if CNG is easy to obtain on your regular routes, you drive enough kilometres for the fuel-cost difference to matter, and the specific car has a documented history and a sensible price premium. There is no universal winner. Compare the exact model year, generation, trim, transmission, factory-fitted fuel system, condition and local running costs before deciding.
Start by identifying which Grand i10 you are buying
“Grand i10” covers more than one generation and many used-market variants. Hyundai’s current official material is for the Grand i10 NIOS, not every older Grand i10. Its specifications, equipment and CNG packaging should not be projected onto an earlier car.

Before comparing fuel types, record the vehicle’s registration year, model year, generation, trim, gearbox and fuel-system description on the registration and insurance documents. A 2015 Grand i10, a later facelift and a current NIOS may differ in engine calibration, equipment, transmission availability, boot layout and warranty status. Use current NIOS figures below only when the car is actually that version.

| Decision factor | Petrol may suit you when… | Factory CNG may suit you when… |
|---|---|---|
| Published engine output | You value the higher manufacturer-stated peak output. Current NIOS petrol is rated at 83 PS. | You accept the lower published output of the bi-fuel engine, rated at 69 PS, in return for the possibility of lower fuel spending. |
| Refuelling | Petrol stations are more convenient for your routes, or local CNG access is uncertain. | You have dependable CNG stations near home, work or regular trips and have checked real queues and opening hours. |
| Annual distance | You drive relatively few kilometres, so a CNG purchase premium may take too long to recover. | You drive enough for your local per-kilometre saving to repay the purchase premium and any additional inspection or repair costs. |
| Used-car risk | You found a well-documented petrol car while the CNG candidate has unclear conversion or maintenance records. | The vehicle is factory CNG, its equipment and paperwork are verifiable, and an independent inspection is clean. |
| Luggage | The exact car’s boot meets your needs after you inspect it with your normal luggage. | On the current NIOS, Hyundai describes the Hy-CNG Duo dual-cylinder layout as providing more boot space; measure the actual car and do not assume earlier models use the same arrangement. |
The table is a decision guide, not a claim that one fuel is universally cheaper or more reliable. Your fuel prices, distance, station access, asking prices and vehicle condition determine the result.

What the current Grand i10 NIOS specifications actually say
Both versions use a 1.2-litre engine, but the published output is different
Hyundai lists a 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.2-litre bi-fuel petrol/CNG engine for the current NIOS. The petrol version’s maximum power is 61 kW (83 PS) at 6,000 rpm. The bi-fuel version is listed at 50.5 kW (69 PS) at 6,000 rpm.
Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent acceleration tests, fuel-economy measurements or a prediction of how a particular used car will perform. In everyday driving, the practical difference will also depend on load, road gradient, air-conditioning use, tyre condition, maintenance and whether the CNG system is operating correctly. Treat 83 PS versus 69 PS as a stated-output comparison only.
Fuel capacities are not mileage figures
Hyundai’s current listing gives petrol NIOS models a 37-litre petrol tank. The bi-fuel model is listed with 37 litres of petrol plus 60 litres of CNG water equivalent. These are capacities, not promises about distance per tank. CNG usable quantity varies with pressure, temperature and the station’s filling conditions, so do not convert the capacity into a range without reliable records from the exact car.
The current CNG system is factory bi-fuel
A factory CNG NIOS can run on petrol and CNG; it is not a CNG-only vehicle. That gives the driver a petrol fallback when a station is unavailable, but it also means there are two fuel systems to inspect and maintain. A factory bi-fuel specification does not validate an aftermarket conversion installed in an older Grand i10. Treat an aftermarket-converted car as a separate risk category and require specialist documentation and inspection.
Dual-cylinder packaging needs an inspection, not an assumption
Hyundai describes the current Hy-CNG Duo arrangement as a dual-cylinder system that offers more boot space and fuel efficiency. That is the manufacturer’s product claim, not independent comparative testing. The cited product material does not provide a comparable usable-boot-volume measurement, and older Grand i10 CNG cars may use a different layout.
Open the boot of the exact vehicle, place your regular bags, stroller or work equipment inside and check whether the floor, spare-wheel area and loading height work for you. A brochure description cannot replace that test.

How to compare running cost without inventing a payback period
Manufacturer material does not establish real-world used-car mileage, current fuel prices, a universal CNG station network or a break-even distance. Calculate the result with your own local inputs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCollect the five inputs
- The petrol car’s actual asking price and the CNG car’s asking price, adjusted for condition and included repairs.
- Current petrol and CNG prices at stations you can realistically use.
- Your expected annual distance, split between routine commuting and longer trips if that changes refuelling.
- Realistic fuel-use records for the exact cars, preferably from several refills in similar traffic rather than a dashboard estimate or a seller’s claim.
- Immediate and foreseeable costs found during inspection, including overdue servicing, tyres, brakes, suspension, cooling-system work and CNG-system repairs.
Use a per-kilometre calculation
For each fuel, calculate:
fuel cost per kilometre = fuel price per unit ÷ observed distance per unit
Then calculate:
annual fuel cost = annual kilometres × fuel cost per kilometre
Compare the two annual figures, then subtract the CNG car’s additional ownership costs from its apparent saving. The recovery time for a CNG premium is:
break-even years = (CNG purchase premium + extra initial costs) ÷ annual net fuel saving
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the numerator is zero or the annual saving is uncertain, there is no defensible payback claim. Do not use a published capacity, a claimed “fuel efficiency” phrase or an internet mileage number as a substitute for measured consumption in the car you are buying.

Include the cost of convenience
A lower fuel bill can be outweighed by detours to a distant station, long queues, restricted opening times or carrying extra petrol because CNG access is unreliable. Estimate the time and distance added by your normal refuelling routine. If you regularly take trips beyond the CNG network, value the petrol fallback rather than assuming every kilometre will be run on CNG.
When petrol is the better used-car choice
You drive too little to recover the premium
If annual kilometres are modest, the difference between two asking prices may remain unrecovered for years. Use your own price and fuel records instead of a generic threshold. A cheaper, well-maintained petrol car can have the lower total cost even if CNG is cheaper per unit of fuel.
Your routes do not support dependable CNG refuelling
Petrol is usually the more practical choice when the nearest suitable CNG station is off-route, regularly crowded or unavailable at the times you travel. This is a local decision: verify stations along your actual commute and frequent intercity routes rather than relying on a citywide map.

You prioritise the higher published output
The current NIOS petrol rating is 83 PS versus 69 PS for the bi-fuel version. If you frequently carry passengers, climb steep roads or prefer stronger acceleration, start with a careful road test of both cars. The output figures indicate the manufacturer’s rating but do not replace an inspection or a drive in the exact vehicle.
The petrol car’s history is substantially clearer
A documented petrol car with consistent servicing can be a lower-risk purchase than a CNG car with missing invoices, unexplained fuel-system work or uncertain conversion history. Condition and records matter more than fuel type alone in an older used vehicle.
When a factory CNG Grand i10 can make more sense
You can refuel on your normal routes
Confirm the locations yourself, visit at the times you would actually fill up and ask whether queues or operating hours make the route impractical. CNG convenience must be demonstrated locally; it cannot be inferred from the existence of a factory CNG variant.

Your annual distance creates a measurable saving
Use several refill records, local prices and your expected kilometres. A high-mileage driver has more opportunity to benefit, but only if the observed per-kilometre saving is real and the purchase premium is reasonable.

The car is factory-fitted and fully documented
Check that the registration and vehicle identification records identify the car as factory CNG. Ask for service invoices, CNG-system work orders and evidence that scheduled maintenance was completed. Have an independent inspector examine the cylinders, mounting points, fuel lines, valves, leak protection, engine operation on both fuels and the changeover system.
The price reflects the car’s condition
Do not pay a CNG premium merely because the badge says CNG. Compare equivalent year, trim, transmission, kilometres, tyre condition, accident history and pending repairs. A seemingly cheap CNG example can become expensive if it needs fuel-system work immediately after purchase.
Used-car inspection checklist
Carry out these checks before paying a deposit. A short test drive or a seller’s verbal assurance is not enough.
- Verify identity. Match the registration certificate, vehicle identification number, engine number where applicable, insurance records and seller’s identity. Confirm the model year and generation rather than accepting “Grand i10” as a complete description.
- Confirm the fuel system. Determine whether the car left the factory as bi-fuel. If it was converted later, obtain the installer’s records, approvals and service history and price it as a higher-risk purchase unless a qualified inspector is satisfied.
- Record the exact variant and gearbox. Note trim, manual or automated manual transmission and equipment. Current NIOS material lists petrol manual and AMT versions, while factory Hy-CNG Duo versions are listed with a manual transmission in selected trims; older cars can differ.
- Review service evidence. Look for dated invoices, odometer continuity, oil and filter intervals, cooling-system work, clutch or transmission repairs and any CNG-system interventions. Call the servicing workshop if the documents provide a verifiable contact.
- Inspect for accident and flood damage. Check panel alignment, paint texture, structural repairs, corrosion, damp carpets, electrical faults and warning lights. An independent inspection is particularly important when the seller cannot explain a repair.
- Test both fuels on a factory CNG car. Start from cold, observe the changeover, listen for rough running, check idle quality and drive under light and moderate load on petrol and CNG. Do not perform leak tests yourself; have the inspector use suitable equipment.
- Check the boot and underbody. Load the items you carry every week. Inspect cylinder mounting, underbody protection, exhaust routing and signs of impact or corrosion without disturbing safety components.
- Check tyres, brakes, suspension and cooling. These items affect safety and can erase a fuel saving quickly. Obtain written estimates for anything near replacement.
- Confirm documents before closing. Ensure the fuel type, ownership transfer requirements, insurance details and any finance release are correct. Keep copies of all invoices and inspection findings.
Warranty: what the published policies do—and do not—prove
General NIOS warranty
Hyundai’s general policy displays three years or 100,000 km, whichever occurs first, for the NIOS, with the policy marked valid from January 2022 onward. The policy also excludes failures related to unapproved accessories or modifications. This is a policy description, not proof that a particular used car still has coverage.
Ask Hyundai or an authorised dealer to verify the original delivery date, recorded kilometres, service compliance, transfer status and written warranty documents for the vehicle identification number. A late-model car can have little or no remaining time or distance even if its registration year looks recent.

Specific emission-warranty term for listed Grand i10 cars
Hyundai’s published emission-warranty page states that EON, Elite i20, Grand i10, Xcent and i20 Active vehicles sold from 1 March 2018 receive coverage for 36 months or 80,000 km, whichever occurs first, with remaining coverage transferable, subject to the policy terms. Confirm that the individual car falls within the listed scope and that its remaining period has not expired. Do not treat this emission warranty as a blanket extension of the vehicle’s general warranty.
Why modifications matter
An unapproved conversion or accessory can affect warranty eligibility for related failures. Ask for written confirmation of what is covered rather than relying on a seller’s statement. Factory CNG status is not interchangeable with an aftermarket installation.
Performance, practicality and ownership trade-offs
Driving feel
The petrol NIOS has the higher published maximum power, while the bi-fuel version trades output for a two-fuel system. Compare the exact cars on the same route, including a hill, a full-load start and stop-and-go traffic if possible. Check clutch take-up, gear selection, engine vibration, warning lights and smoothness during fuel changeover.
Boot use
Current dual-cylinder packaging is described by Hyundai as offering more boot space than its earlier CNG arrangement, but the source does not state a usable volume. Measure the car you are buying. For an older Grand i10, assume nothing about the current NIOS layout until you open the boot and inspect beneath the floor.
Maintenance planning
Both cars require normal used-car maintenance; a bi-fuel car adds CNG components and a second fuel path to the inspection list. Budget for the defects found on the individual vehicle, not an assumed universal CNG surcharge. Conversely, do not assume a petrol car is automatically trouble-free: age, neglect and accident repairs can dominate ownership cost.
A practical decision worksheet
Fill in these fields for each candidate before negotiating:
| Field | Petrol candidate | Factory CNG candidate |
|---|---|---|
| Model year, generation and trim | Record from documents | Record from documents |
| Transmission | Manual or AMT | Usually confirm the exact manual variant |
| Asking price | Enter seller’s price | Enter seller’s price |
| Immediate repairs identified | Use written inspection estimate | Use written inspection estimate, including CNG components |
| Observed fuel use | Use refill records for this car | Use separate petrol and CNG records where available |
| Local fuel price | Price at your regular stations | Price at your regular CNG stations |
| Annual kilometres | Use your route plan | Use your route plan |
| Refuelling time and detour | Record normal petrol routine | Record normal CNG routine plus petrol backup |
| Warranty confirmed in writing? | Yes or no, with dates and kilometres | Yes or no, with dates and kilometres |
Choose the car with the lower total ownership risk and cost after these entries—not the car with the more attractive fuel label.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Comparing generations as though they are identical. Current NIOS specifications do not describe every older Grand i10.
- Confusing capacity with efficiency. A 37-litre tank or 60-litre water-equivalent CNG capacity says nothing by itself about kilometres per tank.
- Using a seller’s mileage claim as a test result. Verify consumption with refill records from the exact vehicle and your traffic conditions.
- Assuming CNG always pays back. The answer depends on local prices, annual distance, purchase premium, station access and repair findings.
- Treating an aftermarket conversion as factory CNG. Verify the original specification and inspect the installation separately.
- Assuming a published warranty still applies. Check delivery date, kilometres, maintenance, transfer status and written eligibility for the vehicle identification number.
- Ignoring boot usability. Open the boot and load your own equipment; do not infer usable space from a product description.
- Skipping an independent inspection. A clean-looking exterior cannot reveal fuel-system, structural, mechanical or odometer problems.
Final buying rule
Buy the petrol Grand i10 when it gives you the better-documented car, easier refuelling and acceptable performance at a price your annual driving can justify. Buy the factory CNG version when stations fit your routine, measured fuel costs create a meaningful saving, and the individual vehicle passes a specialist inspection with its documents and warranty position confirmed. The right answer is determined by the exact used car and your routes—not by the fuel badge alone.
