Edmunds’ five-year estimate for a used 2021 Honda Civic Sport sedan is $37,579, compared with $61,233 for a used 2021 BMW 530i sedan. The Civic is lower by $23,654 when those two estimates are subtracted.
That is a model-year-and-trim comparison, not a universal promise that every used Civic will cost less than every used BMW 5 Series. Mileage, condition, service records, purchase price, location, insurance, financing and the exact powertrain can change the result. Use the figures below as a controlled reference, then calculate the cost for the two specific cars you are considering.

The short answer: the Civic wins this five-year comparison
For the specific vehicles Edmunds modeled—a 2021 Honda Civic Sport sedan and a 2021 BMW 530i sedan—the Civic has the lower estimated five-year ownership cost by $23,654. Edmunds’ totals are $37,579 for the Civic and $61,233 for the BMW.
The difference is not based on purchase price alone. The estimate combines depreciation, taxes and fees, financing, fuel, insurance, repairs and scheduled maintenance. In this modeled pair, the BMW has higher estimated fuel, repair, maintenance, depreciation, and tax-and-fee costs. Its modeled insurance and financing costs are lower than the Civic’s, but not enough to offset the other categories.

Because the title does not specify a year, trim, mileage, state or budget, there is no honest single answer for every Civic-versus-5 Series purchase. A high-mileage Civic with missing service records can be a worse buy than a carefully maintained BMW, while a low-mileage BMW with an expensive upcoming service can change the economics in the opposite direction. The exact vehicles—not the badges alone—decide your result.
What the Edmunds 2021 example actually includes
The following table reproduces the two five-year estimates shown on Edmunds’ current cost-estimator pages accessed October 13, 2026. The figures are estimates under Edmunds’ assumptions, not invoices or guarantees for an individual owner.
| Cost category | Used 2021 Honda Civic Sport sedan | Used 2021 BMW 530i sedan | BMW minus Civic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Depreciation | $9,969 | $14,368 | $4,399 higher for BMW |
| Taxes and fees | $1,509 | $3,054 | $1,545 higher for BMW |
| Financing | $4,342 | $4,590 | $248 higher for BMW |
| Fuel | $9,089 | $14,171 | $5,082 higher for BMW |
| Insurance | $5,898 | $4,295 | $1,603 lower for BMW |
| Repairs | $2,069 | $9,698 | $7,629 higher for BMW |
| Maintenance | $4,703 | $11,057 | $6,354 higher for BMW |
| Five-year total | $37,579 | $61,233 | $23,654 higher for BMW |
The $23,654 difference is arithmetic based on the two published totals; it is not a separate number published by Edmunds. The largest modeled gaps are repairs, maintenance and fuel. Insurance moves in the BMW’s favor in this particular estimate, illustrating why a comparison based only on one category can be misleading.

How Edmunds’ ownership estimate is calculated
Edmunds describes True Cost to Own as a comparative tool rather than a prediction for one named buyer. Its standard assumptions include five years of ownership, 15,000 miles per year, a 10% down payment and 60-month financing. Fuel and insurance are especially sensitive to region and personal circumstances, and every total depends on the selected model year and trim.
Those assumptions create a common yardstick: both vehicles are evaluated over the same time and mileage horizon instead of one being driven farther or financed differently. They do not reproduce your ownership plan automatically. If you drive 8,000 miles a year, pay cash, put 20% down, keep a car for three years or live where insurance and fuel prices differ from the estimator’s inputs, your totals will diverge.
Why the model year and trim matter
“Honda Civic” and “BMW 5 Series” cover many generations, engines, body styles and equipment levels. A 2021 Civic Sport sedan is not the same cost object as a Civic hatchback, an older Civic with substantially more mileage or a hybrid from another year. Likewise, a 530i, a six-cylinder 5 Series, an all-wheel-drive version and a performance-oriented variant can have different fuel, tire, maintenance and insurance profiles.

Always enter the exact year, body style, drivetrain and trim when an estimator allows it. If the site does not offer the exact configuration, treat the closest result as a directional reference and document the mismatch rather than presenting it as a precise forecast.
Fuel: the Civic’s published efficiency and your driving pattern
Edmunds lists the 2021 Civic Sport sedan at 29 mpg city, 37 mpg highway and 32 mpg combined, using regular unleaded fuel. Those specifications apply to that trim. They do not establish the BMW’s fuel economy, nor do they predict what either car will achieve in your traffic, climate or driving style.
The modeled five-year fuel totals are $9,089 for the Civic and $14,171 for the BMW. The $5,082 gap reflects the estimator’s assumptions about mileage, fuel prices and each selected vehicle; it is not a guaranteed amount you will save. Your result depends on annual miles, the share of city versus highway driving, fuel grade and local prices.
Calculate fuel for your own commute
- Write down the miles you expect to drive in a year, including commuting, errands and road trips.
- Estimate your real-world combined mpg for the exact vehicle. Use the published rating as a starting point, then adjust if your driving is mostly short urban trips, high-speed highway travel, winter driving or heavy loads.
- Divide annual miles by estimated mpg to obtain gallons per year.
- Multiply gallons by the local price for the fuel grade the vehicle requires.
- Multiply the annual result by the number of years you expect to keep the car.
Run the same calculation for both cars using identical mileage and fuel-price assumptions. This prevents a comparison in which one vehicle is inadvertently assigned a different driving pattern.
Repairs and maintenance: the biggest modeled ownership gap
In the Edmunds example, estimated repairs are $2,069 for the Civic and $9,698 for the BMW. Estimated maintenance is $4,703 for the Civic and $11,057 for the BMW. Combined, those categories total $6,772 for the Civic and $20,755 for the BMW, a modeled difference of $13,983.

What to verify on the exact car
- Service documentation: Look for dated invoices or a digital service history, not only a seller’s verbal description.
- Current mileage: Compare it with the age of the vehicle and the mileage assumed in your ownership plan.
- Upcoming scheduled work: Ask a manufacturer-trained shop what services are due at the car’s current mileage and what is likely to come next.
- Wear items: Inspect tires, brakes, battery, belts, suspension components, lights and windshield condition.
- Warning signs: Scan for dashboard warning lights, fluid leaks, unusual noises, uneven tire wear and inconsistent panel gaps.
- Warranty or coverage: Confirm what remains, whether it transfers to you and which exclusions apply.
Pay for an independent pre-purchase inspection before committing to either vehicle. Request a written report with safety defects, imminent maintenance and estimated repair priorities. If the seller will not allow an inspection, treat that refusal as a material risk rather than assuming the car is sound.
Depreciation and purchase price
Edmunds estimates depreciation of $9,969 for the Civic and $14,368 for the BMW over five years in this example. Depreciation is the value the vehicle loses during your ownership; it is an economic cost even if no cash leaves your account each month.
The estimate does not tell you that every BMW will lose exactly $14,368 or that every Civic will lose exactly $9,969. Actual depreciation depends on the price you pay, mileage added, condition at resale, accident history, equipment, regional demand and the market when you sell.
Compare the ownership horizon, not just today’s listing price
- Record each car’s asking price, taxes, registration and dealer or documentation charges.
- Estimate the vehicle’s likely value when you plan to sell it, using conservative assumptions for mileage and condition.
- Subtract the expected sale value from the amount you pay, including unavoidable acquisition charges.
- Divide that result by the number of months you expect to own the vehicle to see the depreciation cost per month.
A cheaper listing can still be more expensive to own if it needs major work, has poor resale prospects or is financed at a higher rate. Conversely, a higher purchase price does not automatically make the BMW a bad choice if its condition and expected resale value are unusually strong. Compare the two exact cars over the same holding period.
Insurance, taxes, registration and financing
Insurance
The modeled insurance totals are $5,898 for the Civic and $4,295 for the BMW, making the BMW lower by $1,603 in this particular estimate. That result should not be generalized. Premiums depend on your age, driving record, address, coverage limits, deductible, credit-based insurance factors where permitted, annual mileage and the insurer’s underwriting rules.
Get quotes for the vehicle identification number or exact year, trim and equipment before buying. Request identical liability limits, comprehensive and collision deductibles, rental coverage and uninsured-motorist coverage for both cars. A quote for a generic “Civic” or “5 Series” may omit differences that materially affect the premium.

Taxes and registration
Edmunds models $1,509 in taxes and fees for the Civic and $3,054 for the BMW. Your state, county, purchase price, registration schedule, title charges and local rules can produce different totals. Ask the seller for a written out-the-door price and verify registration costs with your state or local motor-vehicle agency.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Financing
The example assigns $4,342 in financing cost to the Civic and $4,590 to the BMW. The narrow $248 gap is specific to Edmunds’ assumptions. Your annual percentage rate, loan amount, down payment, term, fees and credit profile can reverse or widen it.
Request loan offers before negotiating the vehicle price. Compare the amount financed, APR, term, total interest and any prepayment restrictions. A longer term can reduce the monthly payment while increasing total interest, so include the full financing cost in the ownership calculation.

| Purchase cost | Asking price, negotiated price, taxes, title, registration and dealer fees |
| Starting condition | Mileage, inspection findings, tires, brakes, battery, fluids and known faults |

| Maintenance | Scheduled services due during your ownership period |
| Repairs | Inspection priorities, known defects and a contingency reserve |
| Resale | Expected sale value at the end of your planned ownership |
Add the categories for each vehicle and subtract the expected resale value from the acquisition and ownership costs. Do not hide one-time expenses inside a monthly figure without labeling them. Keeping the worksheet itemized makes it easier to see whether a decision changes because of fuel, insurance, financing, condition or an upcoming repair.
When the BMW can still make sense
The Civic is the clear lower-cost choice in the cited 2021 estimate, but cost is not the only purchase criterion. A buyer may knowingly choose the BMW for its size, driving characteristics, cabin equipment or other priorities. If you do, budget from the exact car’s condition rather than assuming the model-level estimate guarantees reliability.

A well-documented BMW with a thorough inspection, recent major service and a price that reflects its condition may be a more rational purchase than a neglected Civic. That statement is not a reliability ranking; it is a reminder that used-car condition can outweigh averages. Conversely, the Civic’s lower modeled ownership cost does not protect you from a bad individual example.
Common comparison mistakes and how to avoid them
- Comparing different years: Use the same model year where possible, or explain why a year mismatch is unavoidable.
- Using different mileage assumptions: Apply the same annual miles and ownership period to both cars.
- Ignoring trim and drivetrain: Record the exact configuration, including all-wheel drive or a different engine.
- Counting only the monthly payment: Include depreciation, fuel, insurance, maintenance, repairs, taxes and fees.
- Assuming an estimator is a guarantee: Treat published totals as comparative planning figures.
- Skipping a local insurance quote: Personal and regional factors can change the ranking of this category.
- Overlooking condition: A pre-purchase inspection and service-history review are essential for any used vehicle.
- Trusting a low asking price without checking fees: Obtain the complete out-the-door amount in writing.
Decision guide
Choose the Civic when minimizing predictable ownership cost is the priority
The 2021 example supports the Civic if your main objective is reducing modeled five-year spending, particularly fuel, repairs and maintenance. Confirm that the specific Civic has acceptable condition and records before treating the estimate as relevant to your purchase.
Consider the BMW when the exact car passes financial and mechanical checks
Consider the 5 Series only after you have a vehicle-specific inspection, local insurance quote, financing offer and maintenance plan. Set aside a repair reserve that reflects the car’s age, mileage and inspection findings; do not rely solely on the lower insurance estimate in the Edmunds example.
Recommended Free Tools
Pause when the data cannot be made comparable
If one seller will not disclose the VIN, service history, out-the-door price or inspection access, you do not have enough information for a responsible cost comparison. Find a comparable vehicle or postpone the purchase rather than filling missing values with optimistic assumptions.
Bottom line
For Edmunds’ used 2021 comparison, the Honda Civic Sport sedan costs an estimated $37,579 to own for five years versus $61,233 for the BMW 530i sedan—a $23,654 difference in the Civic’s favor. The result reflects Edmunds’ standardized assumptions and those exact trims. To answer the question for your own purchase, compare identical ownership terms, obtain local insurance and financing figures, inspect each vehicle independently, and account for mileage, condition, service history and resale value.
