There is no defensible universal winner between a used Honda City and a used Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. Buy the better-documented, better-maintained car with the right engine and gearbox for your driving, even if that means choosing the less fashionable badge. Compare cars from a similar model year and generation, then verify condition, service history, equipment, asking price and local support before deciding.
Start with a like-for-like comparison
“Honda City” and “Maruti Suzuki Ciaz” cover several generations, engines, transmissions and trims. A 2015 petrol manual cannot be judged against a 2020 diesel automatic as though they were the same product. Before viewing advertisements, record these details for every candidate:

Identify the exact Ciaz generation and specification
The Ciaz changed specification during its life, so the registration year alone is not enough. Check the manufacturing date, facelift status, engine code, gearbox and trim on the registration documents, VIN information and service invoice. A seller’s description such as “2018 model” may refer to registration rather than production or the updated version.

The 2018-updated petrol is the K15B 1.5-litre four-cylinder. At launch it produced 103hp and 138Nm and was paired with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic. Earlier and later cars may differ in equipment or emissions hardware. The 1.3-litre diesel and short-lived 1.5-litre diesel also have different maintenance and emissions considerations. Record the exact specification on your comparison sheet before comparing any quoted fuel economy.
Maruti Suzuki Ciaz: engines, equipment and known checks
2018-updated petrol
The recent used-Ciaz guide describes the updated petrol as a 1.5-litre K15B four-cylinder producing 103hp and 138Nm. At launch it was offered with a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. The same guide reports ARAI-certified economy of 21.56 km/l for the manual and 20.28 km/l for the automatic. Those are certification figures for specified versions, not a promise of what your car will achieve in traffic.
Diesel choices
The 1.3-litre diesel is described as a Fiat-sourced unit rated at 90hp and 200Nm, with a claimed 28.09 km/l. A 1.5-litre diesel rated at 95hp and 225Nm used a six-speed manual and carried an ARAI-rated 26.82 km/l figure. The 1.5 diesel was sold for about a year before BS6-related discontinuation, so confirm both the production date and emissions status when considering one.
All of these economy numbers come from the cited guide’s published or certification figures. They are not results from a same-condition City-versus-Ciaz road test. Traffic, tyre condition, servicing, load, air-conditioning use and driving style can produce substantially different consumption.
Trim-dependent equipment
The guide lists the top Alpha trim with a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic climate control, LED lamps, cruise control, a rear camera and two airbags. Equipment changed by year and trim; a lower or earlier car may not have any particular item. Check the physical car and its invoice or specification sheet rather than relying on an advertisement that says “fully loaded.”
Suspension, electronics and body checks
- Drive over a rough, legal section of road. Listen for suspension thuds or rattles. Noise is an inspection prompt, not proof of a specific failed component; have a technician isolate the cause and quote the repair.
- Operate the infotainment system. Test the touchscreen, audio sources, steering controls, reverse-camera display and phone pairing. Check that the software does not freeze or reboot.
- Inspect the underbody. Look for scrapes, bent metal, fresh underseal, fluid leaks and impact marks. Raise the car on a lift for a proper examination.
- Check steering return. On a safe, empty road, confirm that the wheel recentres normally after a turn. Poor return can indicate alignment, tyre, suspension or steering issues that require diagnosis.
- Look inside for rattles and damage. Examine dashboard and door-panel fit, seat wear, switches, carpets and signs of water entry. A clean odometer reading should be consistent with the cabin and service invoices.
2019 MGU recall
The guide reports a voluntary MGU recall for mild-hybrid Ciaz models manufactured from January 1 through November 21, 2019. Ask for documentary confirmation that the repair was completed for any car in that production window. If the seller cannot provide it, contact an authorised service outlet with the vehicle identification number before paying a deposit. The recall reference is an inspection requirement, not evidence that every affected car has a current defect.
Honda City: what you can and cannot conclude
Do not transfer current specifications to an older car
Honda’s current City page lists petrol mileage of 17.77 km/l with the manual and 17.97 km/l with the CVT. It also lists Honda SENSING functions including collision mitigation braking, road departure mitigation, lane keep assist, lead car departure notification and automatic high beam. Those figures and systems describe the current model shown on that page. They do not prove that a 2014, 2017 or 2020 used City has the same engine calibration, gearbox, fuel economy or driver-assistance hardware.

Build the City inspection from the actual car
No matched City used-car fault list or ownership-cost comparison is published, so use the same disciplined inspection applied to the Ciaz: verify the service book and invoices, scan for stored diagnostic faults, inspect for accident repairs and corrosion, check tyre age and wear, test every electrical function, and have an independent mechanic examine the suspension, steering, brakes, cooling system, engine and transmission. Ask the workshop to identify measured defects rather than accepting a general “looks fine.”
Compare transmissions and fuel choices honestly
“Automatic” does not describe one driving experience. The 2018-updated Ciaz petrol automatic used a four-speed transmission, while current City specifications refer to a CVT; an older City may have a different generation or transmission altogether. During a test drive, check take-off smoothness, response when joining traffic, creeping in a queue, kick-down or simulated ratio changes, and any flare, shudder or delay. A gearbox that shifts acceptably when cold but slips after warming up needs specialist diagnosis.
For manuals, check clutch bite point, judder, pedal effort, gear selection and reverse engagement. For any diesel, ask how the car was used, whether servicing was completed on schedule, and whether local emissions rules affect registration or use. Do not select a diesel merely because its quoted economy is higher; a low-distance urban user may not recover the additional maintenance exposure.
How to compare asking prices without overpaying
Use the Ciaz range correctly
Autocar India’s recent guide gives ₹5–7 lakh as an indicative used-Ciaz range, depending on model year, variant and powertrain. It is a broad editorial estimate, not a live listing, city-specific valuation or guaranteed transaction price. Local supply, registration location, owner count, kilometres, accident history, tyres, insurance and pending maintenance can move a car well outside that band.

For each candidate, write down the asking price and add immediate costs: insurance renewal, tyres, battery, scheduled service, fluids, brake work, suspension components, dent and paint repairs, and transfer fees where applicable. Then compare the resulting first-year outlay, not just the windshield price. A cheaper car with overdue maintenance may cost more than a higher-priced example with complete records.
Do not use historical service, insurance or used prices from the November 16, 2018 Ciaz guide as current costs. They are useful only for understanding what was reported at that time.
A practical buying process
1. Shortlist comparable cars
Choose two or more examples with closely similar years, fuel, gearbox and trim. Reject listings that hide the registration year, variant or ownership history. Ask for the vehicle identification number before arranging a paid inspection.

2. Verify documents before a test drive
- Registration certificate and seller identity
- Insurance policy and claim history
- Pollution certificate where required
- Service invoices with dates, odometer readings and workshop details
- Loan or hypothecation closure documents, if applicable
- Recall completion evidence for a 2019 mild-hybrid Ciaz in the stated production period
3. Inspect the cold car
Arrange to see the car before it has been warmed up. Check for smoke at start-up, warning lights, uneven idle, fluid leaks and evidence that the engine bay was recently washed to conceal leaks. Compare the odometer with service records, tyre wear, steering-wheel shine and seat wear.

Use city streets, an open road and a rough section where legal and safe. Evaluate clutch engagement or automatic take-up, shift quality, braking straightness, steering return, suspension noise, air-conditioning performance, visibility and highway stability. Test the reverse camera, infotainment, Bluetooth or smartphone pairing, lights, wipers, windows, mirrors and all warning indicators.
5. Get an independent mechanical inspection
Use a workshop that is not financially connected to the seller. Request a written report with photographs and separate “urgent,” “soon” and “monitor” items. A generic automotive OBD2 scanner can reveal some stored engine or emissions faults, but confirm compatibility with the exact model year and understand its limits: it cannot assess every mechanical, structural or cosmetic condition. Treat a scan as an aid, never a substitute for a lift inspection and road test.
6. Recalculate the offer
Subtract documented repair costs from the price you are willing to pay, while allowing a reserve for faults that an inspection cannot predict. If the seller refuses an independent inspection, cannot explain missing records or pressures you to pay before verification, walk away and compare another car.
Choose by driving pattern, not badge
Mostly urban, moderate annual distance
Compare petrol versions first unless your running is high enough to justify diesel ownership and the car’s emissions compliance is clear. An automatic may reduce fatigue in traffic, but identify whether the Ciaz is the four-speed automatic and whether the City uses a CVT; these are different designs and should be judged by condition and test-drive behaviour, not by the word “automatic” alone.
High annual distance and regular highways
A documented diesel can make sense when it is driven enough to reach operating temperature regularly and its maintenance history is complete. Confirm the exact Ciaz diesel, production date and emissions requirements in your location. Do not buy a diesel solely for a quoted economy number, because those figures are certification or claimed values and real use varies.
Feature-led buying
Make a checklist of must-have equipment—automatic climate control, cruise control, touchscreen phone integration, LED lighting or a rear camera—and verify each item on the specific car. The Alpha-trim Ciaz equipment list cannot be applied to every Ciaz, and current City driver-assistance features cannot be assumed on an older City.

Long-term support
Ask two local workshops for typical lead times and estimates for routine service and likely wear items on the exact engine and gearbox. The older 2014–2018 Ciaz guide said parts and spares were readily available when it was written, but that observation and its quoted prices date from 2018. Your local availability in 2026 should be confirmed directly.

- Which workshop serviced it, and can every invoice be matched to the odometer?
- Has any panel, glass, airbag or structural component been replaced?
- Were tyres, battery, clutch, brakes or suspension parts recently changed? Ask for bills.
- For a Ciaz built between January 1 and November 21, 2019, is the MGU recall completion documented?
- Are both keys, the owner’s manual and the service booklet present?
- Will the seller allow a cold start, lift inspection and diagnostic scan before payment?
Vague answers are not proof of a bad car, but they increase the risk and should be reflected in your offer or decision to walk away.

Safety and ownership-cost claims need caution
No comparable, model-year-specific crash-test result or matched repair-cost study for used City and Ciaz cars is published. Do not declare one safer or cheaper to maintain from current showroom specifications, a single trim or brand reputation. Verify airbags, antilock braking, electronic stability equipment and any driver-assistance system on the exact vehicle, then inspect crash repairs and structural alignment. A car with more listed features can still be the poorer purchase if those systems are damaged, disabled or unsupported by records.
A decision rule you can apply at the seller’s car
- Discard any car with unclear ownership, inconsistent mileage or serious structural repair evidence.
- Among the remaining cars, prefer the one with complete, chronological service records and fewer deferred repairs.
- When condition and records are similar, choose the engine and gearbox that suit your annual distance and traffic.
- Use verified equipment and local service access to break close ties.
- Negotiate only after the independent inspection, using written repair estimates.
With those published facts, the right answer is therefore individual: a comparable, well-maintained City may suit you, or a well-documented Ciaz may offer the better deal. The inspection report and total first-year cost should decide the purchase—not a blanket model verdict.

Are the Ciaz mileage figures real-world results?
No. The cited figures are ARAI-certified or claimed values for specified versions: 21.56 km/l manual petrol, 20.28 km/l automatic petrol, 28.09 km/l for the 1.3 diesel and 26.82 km/l for the 1.5 diesel. Actual consumption varies with conditions.
What should I check on a used Ciaz?

Can an OBD2 scanner replace a mechanic’s inspection?
No. A compatible scanner can reveal some stored engine or emissions faults, but it cannot assess every mechanical, structural or cosmetic condition. Use it alongside a road test and independent lift inspection.
