Used Harley-Davidson motorcycles under $5,000 do exist, but the evidence supports a practical shortlist of model families—not ten reliably available bargains. Sportster 883 and 1200 variants, Street 500 and 750 models, and occasional older Low Rider and Softail Deuce listings are worth searching. Whether any individual bike is worth its price depends on its condition, records, title, location, and the money it needs after purchase.
What you can realistically find under $5,000
Marketplace searches have surfaced examples of Sportster 883 and 1200 variants, Harley-Davidson Street 500 and 750 models, an older Low Rider, and a Softail Deuce below the $5,000 asking-price ceiling. These are listing snapshots, not guarantees of current availability or representative values across the country. The cited search pages do not establish ten distinct models that are routinely available under budget, nor do they show that every example is a good buy.
Use the Cycle Trader under-$5,000 search and Autotrader’s Sportster results capped at $5,000 as starting points. Listings change, and a search result alone does not verify a bike’s condition, title, or service history.
Harley-Davidson candidates to search
These are search leads, not a ranked top ten or a reliability assessment. The strongest evidence in the cited marketplace snapshots is for the following families and variants.

Sportster 883: Iron, Custom, and SuperLow
Multiple 883 variants appeared below $5,000 in the Cycle Trader results. Search by the specific trim—Iron, Custom, or SuperLow—and compare the actual year, mileage, condition, and asking price. An older Motorcyclist feature on used Harley-Davidson options also discusses used 883 and 1,200 Sportsters, but it is older editorial context rather than current pricing evidence.
Sportster 1200 Custom and Roadster
A 2007 1200 Custom appeared in the Cycle Trader search, while Autotrader’s filtered Sportster page surfaced an older 1200 Roadster. Those examples make the variants worth checking locally, but the cited snapshots do not establish a typical price or guarantee either one is currently available near you.

Street 500 and Street 750
Both the Street 500 (XG500) and Street 750 appeared in the Cycle Trader under-$5,000 results. Check the individual listing carefully: the model name and asking price do not tell you how it has been maintained or whether its condition justifies the price.
Older Low Rider and Dyna
An 1986 Low Rider was listed below $5,000 in the marketplace result. Treat it as a lead for a particular older bike, not evidence that every Low Rider or Dyna fits this budget or carries a reliability advantage.

Softail Deuce
A 2001 Softail Deuce also appeared below $5,000 in the same search. The listing does not settle its condition, service history, or configuration; those details must be checked on the actual motorcycle.
Other older Softail or Touring models
Older Softail or Touring motorcycles may turn up in local searches, but the available evidence does not robustly establish a current, clean-title example under $5,000 for each family. Consider them possibilities, not confirmed budget picks, and rely on a current listing before treating any specific example as an under-$5,000 option. Harley-Davidson’s used-motorcycle marketplace is another place to search.

How to decide whether a listing is worth the asking price
Harley-Davidson’s used-motorcycle buying guide recommends setting a realistic budget, comparing listings across years, checking that mileage is consistent, and inspecting a motorcycle in person. Apply those checks to the individual bike rather than assuming a model’s reputation proves its condition.
- Budget beyond the purchase price. Leave room for registration, insurance, and immediate maintenance. A bike advertised for less than $5,000 can still exceed your budget once those costs are included.
- Compare age and mileage together. A low odometer reading by itself does not establish good value. Look for consistency in the mileage and compare the bike with listings for similar years and variants.
- Review condition and history. Inspect the motorcycle in person and ask for maintenance records. Check the title status and note modifications as part of your transaction review; neither a listing’s model name nor its asking price confirms these details.
- Check recalls by VIN. Before completing the purchase, use Harley-Davidson’s safety recall information page to look for open recalls on that specific motorcycle.
When a certified used bike may make sense
Harley-Davidson says its Certified Pre-Owned program includes a 110-point quality assurance inspection and 12-month, unlimited-mileage limited powertrain coverage for the engine and transmission. The program is available through dealers, and its price may not fit a $5,000 ceiling. Check the current Certified Pre-Owned program terms and available inventory before treating it as an option.
