Hybrids have had fewer reported problems than gas-only cars in Consumer Reports’ recent owner survey, but the available evidence does not establish a reliable, ranked top 10 of used hybrid models. The sourced candidates below are a starting shortlist—not a guarantee about any particular car. For a used hybrid, the exact model year, generation, service history, condition, and recall status matter as much as the nameplate.
What reliability evidence says about used hybrids
Consumer Reports’ annual reliability survey drew responses from owners of about 380,000 vehicles from model years 2000 through 2025, plus a few early 2026 models. Its summary found that hybrids had fewer reported problems than gas-only vehicles. That is an owner-reported pattern across vehicles, not a controlled test of every hybrid model or a prediction for an individual used car. Consumer Reports’ hybrid reliability survey
Consumer Reports program leader Steven Elek attributed part of the pattern to the brands commonly making hybrids: “One major reason why hybrids tend to be more reliable is that they’re mostly made by brands that make reliable cars, such as Honda, Lexus, and Toyota.” That is an explanation of a broad survey trend, not proof that every vehicle from those brands is trouble-free.
Sourced used-hybrid candidates
Consumer Reports’ used-car materials surface several relevant models, but do not provide comparable model-level evidence for a ranked list of ten. These examples are therefore candidates to investigate, not a top-ten ranking.

| Candidate | What the cited material establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| 2016 Toyota Prius c | Consumer Reports lists it as a used-car recommendation example. | The cited material does not establish a complete reliability comparison against the other candidates. |
| 2014 Toyota Camry Hybrid | Consumer Reports lists it as a used-car recommendation example. | The example does not guarantee the condition or reliability of a specific car. |
| 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid | Consumer Reports lists it as a used-car recommendation example. | The example does not establish a ranking among model years or generations. |
| Lexus CT 200h | Consumer Reports’ used-car brand article names it among relevant models. | The surfaced material does not specify a supported model year or a comparable model-level score. |
| Toyota Prius | Consumer Reports’ used-car brand article names the Prius. | The surfaced material does not provide a complete model-year list or a comparable ranking. |
| Honda Accord Hybrid | Consumer Reports’ used-car brand article names the Accord Hybrid. | The surfaced material does not provide a complete model-year list or a comparable ranking. |
| 2023 Toyota Prius | An Associated Press report of Edmunds’ recommendations includes the redesigned 2023 Prius and reports up to 57 mpg combined, an EPA estimate. | That fuel-economy figure is not reliability evidence, and the recommendation is not a used-car reliability rating. |

How to evaluate a specific used hybrid
A favorable reputation is a reason to investigate a car, not a substitute for checking the individual vehicle. Use the model-year evidence as a filter, then assess the listing and the car itself.

- Confirm the model year and generation. Reliability evidence for one year or generation should not automatically be applied to another, especially when the vehicle has been redesigned.
- Review maintenance and ownership records. Look for documented routine service and investigate gaps or repeated repairs. The sources cited here do not establish the history of any individual listing.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Have a qualified mechanic assess the vehicle’s condition and identify issues that a model reputation cannot rule out.
- Check accident history and mileage. Consider both alongside inspection findings and service records; none alone settles whether the car is a sound purchase.
- Check open recalls for the exact VIN. Model-level reliability coverage does not establish current recall status for a particular car. Confirm that any recall work has been completed.
- Compare practical fit and running costs. Consider body style, passenger and cargo needs, local availability, and year-specific fuel economy separately from reliability.
Keep fuel economy and price in their proper context
Fuel economy and reliability answer different questions. The Associated Press report gives an EPA estimate of up to 57 mpg combined for the 2023 Toyota Prius; that figure describes efficiency for that model-year example, not long-term dependability. The older Prius c, Camry Hybrid, and Accord Hybrid examples on Consumer Reports’ used-car page also have year-specific EPA and retail-price figures, but those figures should be checked on the live page and should not be treated as current transaction prices or values for every car with the same name.
Likewise, a used-car recommendation or a brand’s strong survey history cannot establish what a particular vehicle is worth today. Check current local listings and compare cars of the same year, trim, mileage, and condition.

Why this is a shortlist, not a top 10
The available sources support the broader finding that hybrids performed well in Consumer Reports’ owner-reported survey and identify several used-car candidates. They do not provide consistent, comparable reliability evidence for ten individual models and model years. Filling ten places or assigning a precise order would imply a level of evidence that these sources do not establish.
The cited material also does not support silently mixing conventional hybrids with plug-in hybrids. Treat vehicle type as part of the comparison and verify the specific car’s powertrain before applying guidance about conventional hybrids.
