Used EV battery degradation: what range loss is normal and what is a red flag?

Most modern used EVs lose about 1%–3% of usable capacity per year. Learn how to distinguish normal range variation from abnormal degradation, verify battery SOH, interpret warranty thresholds and compare two cars safely.

For most modern used electric vehicles, losing about 1% to 3% of usable battery capacity per year is a reasonable planning range. Geotab’s January 2026 analysis of more than 22,700 vehicles across 21 makes and models found average annual degradation of 2.3%. Vehicles that relied on sustained DC fast charging above 100 kW reached about 3.0% per year, while those mainly charged with AC or lower-power charging averaged about 1.5%; hot climates added roughly 0.4 percentage points annually. Those are fleet averages, not a pass/fail test for an individual car.

A five-year-old EV may therefore have around 10% to 12% less usable capacity than when new under average conditions. The only dependable way to judge a particular car is to combine a model-specific state-of-health (SOH) measurement, the battery warranty terms, charging and climate history, and a range test performed in comparable conditions.

What battery degradation means in a used EV

Battery degradation is the long-term reduction in the energy a high-voltage battery can deliver. The usual measure is state of health (SOH): usable capacity today divided by the battery’s original usable capacity. A 60-kWh battery at 90% SOH has about 54 kWh of usable energy available, before any additional limits imposed by the car’s charging buffer.

SOH is not the same as the range estimate on the dashboard. The estimate is calculated from recent consumption and can change after a cold night, a motorway trip, steep climbs, a heavy load, or extensive heating or air-conditioning use. Temperature and software-managed buffers can also make a short-term capacity reading move without representing permanent cell wear.

Usable capacity versus the advertised battery size

Automakers may quote gross pack capacity, while the driver can access only a smaller net or usable amount. Always ask which figure a diagnostic report uses. A percentage calculated from gross capacity cannot be compared directly with a percentage calculated from original usable capacity.

Why one reading is not enough

The first years of an EV’s life can follow a different slope from later years, and a single reading can be affected by temperature or battery balancing. Repeated measurements made under similar conditions show a trend; an isolated dashboard range number does not.

How much range loss is normal?

Geotab’s January 2026 telematics study, covering more than 22,700 vehicles from 21 makes and models, found 2.3% average annual degradation. Its charging-pattern analysis found approximately 1.5% per year for vehicles primarily using AC or lower-power charging and up to 3.0% per year for vehicles exposed to high-power DC fast charging above 100 kW. Hot climates increased the observed rate by about 0.4 percentage points per year.

Vehicle age Illustrative capacity loss at 2.3% per year What the figure means
3 years About 7% A fleet-average illustration, not a valuation or warranty test
5 years About 10%–12% A common planning expectation under average conditions
8 years About 18% Actual results vary with model, climate, charging and thermal management

Geotab’s 2024 analysis of approximately 5,000 EVs reported 1.8% average annual degradation. The difference between the two studies shows why no single percentage should be treated as an exact prediction for a VIN. The vehicle’s battery chemistry, cooling and heating system, software buffers, climate and charging history all matter.

High mileage is not a diagnosis

Odometer mileage alone does not establish battery health. In Geotab’s 2024 release, high-use EVs did not show significantly higher degradation than other vehicles in that analysis. A lower-mileage car can still have a harsher history if it was repeatedly fast-charged or stored for long periods at a very high or very low state of charge.

Range changes that are not permanent degradation

A winter range drop, a lower estimate after high-speed driving or hills, or reduced range with a full passenger and cargo load is not proof that cells have permanently lost capacity. Geotab identifies temperature, speed, altitude change, payload and driving style as major range variables. Compare cars using the same weather, route, speed and HVAC settings before drawing a conclusion.

When range loss becomes a red flag

There is no universal red-flag percentage that applies to every make, model year and market. Investigate the battery rather than relying on a rule of thumb when any of these conditions applies:

  • A manufacturer or qualified service-center report places SOH materially below the expectation for that model, age and climate.
  • Repeated capacity measurements under comparable conditions show a steep downward trend.
  • Range remains persistently poor after temperature, speed, terrain, payload and HVAC use are controlled.
  • The car is near or below its applicable warranty capacity threshold.
  • The seller supplies only a dashboard estimate and refuses a written SOH report or an independent EV inspection.

Figures such as 70% or 75% are warranty thresholds only when the exact manufacturer, model year and market terms specify them. They are not universal definitions of a failed battery.

Temporary symptoms versus evidence of a fault

Observation More likely explanation Next action
Lower estimated range on a freezing day Temperature and cabin-heating demand Repeat the comparison in similar weather
Range falls after a fast motorway run Higher aerodynamic and rolling consumption Compare energy use per mile, not the headline estimate
One unusually low SOH reading Temperature, balancing or software estimation Obtain a second measurement under similar conditions
Steep decline in repeated reports Possible abnormal degradation or a battery fault Have a qualified EV technician investigate before buying
SOH below the written warranty threshold Potential warranty claim Confirm eligibility, diagnosis and transfer rules with the manufacturer

How often do EV batteries actually fail?

Complete battery replacement caused by failure is uncommon in available population data. The U.S. Department of Energy summarized a Recurrent study of about 15,000 vehicles from model years 2011–2023: 1.5% required replacement outside recalls. For model years 2016–2023, the rate was well under 1%. The EPA’s summary of the same body of evidence reports that 97.5% of vehicles still used their original batteries outside major recalls.

A low probability of a replacement event does not make an undocumented battery a safe purchase. A failing module, charging-system fault or recall issue can still make one vehicle expensive and unavailable, so verify the individual car rather than applying the population average to it.

How to check an EV battery before buying

  1. Request a written SOH or usable-capacity report. Ask for a manufacturer diagnostic printout or a report from a qualified EV service center. The document should identify the vehicle, date, measured SOH or usable energy, and whether the value is based on net usable capacity.
  2. Record the original in-service date. Warranty clocks usually start when the car first entered service, not when you buy it used. Check the date against the vehicle history and the manufacturer’s records.
  3. Read the battery warranty for the exact market and model year. Note the time limit, mileage limit, capacity threshold, exclusions, diagnostic procedure and whether coverage transfers to a second owner.
  4. Check recalls and completed campaigns. Ask the manufacturer or an authorized service center to confirm the high-voltage battery recall status by VIN.
  5. Ask about charging and storage habits. Find out how often the car used DC fast charging above 100 kW and whether it was routinely left near a very high or very low state of charge. Geotab’s 2026 analysis associated those conditions with higher degradation rates.
  6. Compare the report with model-specific expectations. Use age, mileage, local climate and published experience for that model. Do not compare a percentage based on one model’s original usable capacity with another model’s gross pack figure.
  7. Perform a controlled range check. If practical, start at a documented state of charge, use a similar route and speed, record outside temperature and HVAC use, and calculate energy consumed. This supplements, but does not replace, a diagnostic report.
  8. Get an independent inspection when evidence is missing. If the seller will not provide documentation, either price the uncertainty into the deal or make the sale conditional on an EV inspection and a satisfactory written result.

Questions to put to the seller

  • What is the measured SOH, and who measured it?
  • What was the original in-service date and current odometer reading?
  • How much of the charging was high-power DC fast charging?
  • Was the car regularly stored in extreme heat or left for long periods near 100% or near empty?
  • Are all battery recalls and software campaigns complete?
  • What battery warranty remains, and does it transfer to me?

Warranty thresholds: examples, not universal rules

Battery protection differs by brand, model year and jurisdiction. These examples show why you must read the contract attached to the specific vehicle:

Comparing two used EVs

Battery age and mileage are only the starting points. Put both cars on the same decision sheet:

Comparison axis Why it matters Evidence to request
Measured SOH versus original usable capacity Shows remaining energy in a comparable unit Dated manufacturer or qualified diagnostic report
Degradation trend Separates a stable pack from a rapidly declining one More than one comparable reading, if available
Battery chemistry and thermal management Model design influences how the pack handles heat, cold and charging Vehicle specifications and service documentation
DC-fast-charging exposure Sustained high-power use was associated with higher fleet-average degradation Charging history or owner records
Climate and storage Heat can increase the observed annual rate Vehicle location history and storage details
Remaining warranty and transfer rules Determines who bears the risk if capacity falls below the threshold VIN-specific warranty confirmation
Recalls and service history Unresolved campaigns can affect safety and availability Manufacturer recall lookup and invoices
Diagnostic evidence quality A dashboard estimate is a noisy proxy Written test method, date and measured value

Choose the vehicle with the stronger evidence and warranty position, not automatically the one with the lower odometer reading. A documented 90% SOH car with a transferable warranty can be a lower-risk purchase than a low-mileage car whose battery history is unknown.

What battery health can you reasonably expect?

For a modern EV with a measured result near the model’s age-adjusted norm, 10% degradation after five years is generally within the range suggested by fleet data. A result materially worse than comparable vehicles, a persistent steep decline, or a reading near the applicable warranty threshold deserves a professional diagnosis. The key question is not whether the pack has lost any capacity—it almost certainly has—but whether the loss is consistent, documented and covered by the remaining warranty.

Geotab Vice President David Savage said that, given the higher sustained health seen in newer EV models, batteries will “comfortably outlast the usable life of the vehicle and will likely not need to be replaced.” That is a population-level outlook, not a guarantee for a particular used car, which is why a VIN-specific report remains essential.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 10% battery degradation after five years normal?

Usually, yes. A five-year-old EV showing roughly 10% to 12% less usable capacity is consistent with the 2.3% annual fleet average reported by Geotab in January 2026, although the exact model, climate and charging history can produce a different result.

Should I reject a used EV that has been fast-charged often?

Not automatically. High-power DC fast charging is associated with higher average degradation, but the decision should be based on the vehicle’s measured SOH, trend, remaining warranty and inspection results rather than charging history alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I determine battery health from the displayed miles of range?

No. The dashboard estimate changes with temperature, speed, terrain, payload, driving style and HVAC use. Use a written SOH or usable-capacity report and treat a controlled range check as supporting evidence.

What should I do if the seller refuses a battery report?

Treat the missing information as financial risk. Make the purchase conditional on an independent EV inspection, negotiate a price that reflects the uncertainty, or walk away if the seller will not permit verification.

Does a battery warranty transfer to a second owner?

Rules vary by manufacturer, market and model year. Verify transferability, the original in-service date, mileage limit, capacity threshold and required diagnostic process for the exact VIN.
