Neither used nor new is always the better value. Compare specific cars over the same expected ownership period: a used car wins when its lower price survives financing, inspection, repairs, insurance and resale estimates; a new car can make sense when its actual price and financing narrow the gap enough to justify warranty coverage, newer features and known history.
How to compare value fairly
Use the same ownership horizon and estimated annual mileage for each candidate. Compare actual out-the-door prices and written financing offers—not sticker prices or advertised monthly payments. AAA’s vehicle-cost calculator models five years and includes financing and trade-in value at the end of that period; it can be customized by vehicle, location, mileage and driving mix. It accepts new vehicles and used vehicles at least five model years back. Treat its result as an estimate, and enter consistent assumptions for each car. - Depreciation: purchase price minus expected resale value at the end of your ownership period.
- Financing: interest and fees over the loan term, based on the amount financed, APR and payment count.
- Operating costs: fuel or electricity for your driving pattern, insurance quotes for the specific vehicle and driver, and location-specific taxes, registration and fees.
- Maintenance and repairs: scheduled service, tires and likely age- or mileage-related work.
- Warranty exposure: what remains covered, for how long, and what you would pay for repairs that are excluded.
AAA Mountain West Group’s September 15, 2026 release estimated average annual ownership and operating costs for the new vehicles in its analysis at $12,863, or $1,071.92 per month. It estimated weighted average annual depreciation at $4,422 and sales-weighted average new-vehicle MSRP at $39,376. These are study averages, not forecasts for a particular car or direct comparisons with used vehicles. MSRP is not the same as a buyer’s transaction price; incentives, demand and rebates affect what buyers pay. AAA’s 2026 cost analysis provides its context.

When a used car may offer better value
A used car is more compelling when its discount from a comparable new vehicle is substantial, its condition and history check out, and financing and likely repairs do not erase the savings. A well-maintained used model may put desirable features within reach for less, but age alone does not establish reliability or value: the particular vehicle’s records and inspection matter.
Check the car before deciding
For U.S. dealer purchases, the Federal Trade Commission recommends reading the Buyers Guide, which discloses whether the car is sold with a warranty or as-is. Get any negotiated changes in writing. Review repair records, mileage, safety information and a vehicle history report, and check for recalls. A history report may identify events such as accidents or flood damage, but typically does not list mechanical problems. Arrange an independent mechanical inspection, request a written report and repair estimate, and consider walking away if the dealer will not allow an inspection. The FTC’s used-car buying guidance covers these steps. State requirements can vary.

A clean report is not a substitute for an inspection. Budget for any repairs the mechanic identifies and compare that estimate with the price difference between the used car and its new equivalent.
When a new car may offer better value
New may be reasonable when its negotiated transaction price is close to that of a comparable used car, a financing offer materially changes the total cost, or warranty coverage, current safety equipment and known condition matter enough to you to justify the difference. Those benefits do not make every new car a better deal: check the actual offer and coverage rather than assuming a discount or special rate is available.

AAA’s 2026 annual estimate includes depreciation and financing among the costs of owning and operating the new vehicles it analyzed. That is why a monthly payment or a single annual average cannot settle the comparison. Calculate the total for your candidate vehicles using your own expected mileage, location, insurance quotes and ownership period.

Certified pre-owned (CPO) can be a middle option: it is generally priced above an ordinary used car and may include an inspection and extended warranty support. CPO is not automatically a bargain, and reliability and owner satisfaction vary by model and purchase strategy. Consumer Reports’ article, updated June 22, 2026, describes CPO as a distinct buying strategy; ask the seller for the specifics rather than relying on the label. - What inspection was performed, and what repairs were completed?
- How much of the original factory warranty remains?
- What does the added warranty cover, for how long, and with what deductible or exclusions?
- Are roadside assistance or other benefits included, and what restrictions apply?
Check the financing, not just the payment
A low monthly payment can conceal a longer loan term and a higher overall cost. Compare the out-the-door price, down payment, amount financed, APR, number of payments and total finance charge for each offer. Obtain offers from banks, credit unions or other lenders and compare them with the dealer’s written terms. - Get the out-the-door price for each candidate, including applicable taxes and fees.
- Request written financing terms and record the amount financed, APR, term, payment count and total finance charge.
- Get vehicle-specific insurance quotes and estimate fuel or electricity, maintenance, tires and likely repairs.
- Estimate resale value at the end of the same ownership period for each vehicle.
- Add the costs and subtract expected resale value. Choose the option whose total cost fits your budget and whose condition, warranty and features meet your needs.
Interest rates, incentives, fuel prices, insurance and resale values can change. Recheck current written offers and quotes when you are ready to buy.
