Neither a new car nor a used car is automatically cheaper. Your budget goes further in whichever option has the lower total cost for your planned ownership period after you include the purchase price, taxes and fees, financing, depreciation, insurance, fuel, maintenance, repairs and resale value. Compare two specific vehicles with real lender, insurer and inspection information—not just their advertised prices or monthly payments.
Start with the ownership period, not the sticker price
Choose the period you actually expect to keep the car, such as three, five or seven years. Use the same period for the new and used candidates. A five-year comparison can favor a different vehicle than a two-year comparison because depreciation, warranty coverage, repairs and the remaining loan balance change over time.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
A practical ownership-cost calculation is:
Total cost during ownership = upfront cash + loan payments + insurance + fuel + maintenance and repairs − sale or trade-in value.
If you sell before the loan ends, do not subtract the vehicle’s full resale value unless the loan balance is also accounted for. The amount available to you is the resale value minus the payoff balance. If the payoff is larger, you have negative equity and must bring the difference to the next transaction or add it to another loan.

Edmunds’ True Cost to Own (TCO) framework includes depreciation, financing interest, taxes and fees, insurance, fuel, maintenance and repairs. Edmunds describes TCO as “a comparative tool, not a predictive tool.” Its documented estimator uses assumptions including five years, 15,000 miles per year, a 60-month loan and a 10% down payment. Those are calculator inputs, not a prediction of your driving, credit terms or expenses.
Build a matched comparison for two actual cars
| Cost area | What to collect for each car | Why it can change the result |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront outlay | Negotiated vehicle price, sales tax, title and registration, dealer fees, add-ons, down payment and trade-in credit | A lower advertised price can disappear after mandatory charges or unwanted products are added. |
| Financing | Amount financed, APR, term, finance charge, number of payments and total of payments | A longer term or higher APR can make a lower monthly payment cost more overall. |
| Depreciation and resale | Estimated value when you expect to sell or trade, plus the loan balance at that date | What matters is your equity at exit, not a generic depreciation percentage. |
| Insurance | Vehicle-specific quotes for your address, drivers, coverage limits and deductible | Two cars with similar prices can have very different premiums. |
| Fuel | Expected annual miles, fuel type, realistic consumption and local fuel price assumption | Your mileage and driving mix may differ sharply from an online calculator’s default. |
| Maintenance and repairs | Scheduled services, tires, brakes, inspection findings and likely repairs; subtract only written warranty coverage you can verify | Condition and warranty terms can outweigh the age difference. |
| Personal fit | Cash available, annual mileage, ownership length and tolerance for unexpected bills | The cheapest spreadsheet result may be unsuitable if it leaves no emergency reserve or lacks needed safety or utility features. |
Keep estimates visibly separate from quotes. Replace generic assumptions with an insurance quote, a lender’s written offer, local tax and registration figures, and an independent inspection report whenever possible.
Step-by-step: calculate where your budget goes further
1. Define one realistic scenario
- Write the expected purchase date and the month you expect to sell or trade.
- Enter annual miles based on your commute, errands and trips. Do not automatically use 15,000 miles unless it reflects your use; that is an Edmunds estimator assumption.
- Set the cash you can safely use for a down payment and fees while retaining an emergency reserve.
- List must-have equipment, passenger capacity, towing needs and safety requirements. Eliminate a cheaper car that cannot perform the job.
2. Establish the real drive-away price
Ask each seller for a written buyer’s order showing the negotiated vehicle price, taxes, title, registration, documentation or dealer fees, and every optional product. Treat a trade-in as a separate transaction: record its allowance and any loan payoff rather than allowing a dealer to hide figures in one monthly payment. Add your down payment and any cash due at signing to the worksheet.

3. Compare financing on total dollars
For every lender or dealer offer, record the APR, term, amount financed, finance charge, number of payments, payment amount and total of payments. Shop outside the dealership as well as at the dealership. A low payment may simply reflect a longer term or a higher interest rate; the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises comparing the total sales price with financing, not the payment alone.
Use the same down payment assumption when comparing cars, then run a second scenario with the cash you would actually put down on each one. A larger down payment reduces interest but can leave you short of cash for insurance, registration or repairs.
4. Estimate exit value and loan payoff together
Choose a conservative resale or trade-in estimate for the month you plan to exit. Then obtain an amortization schedule or payoff estimate for that same month. Calculate:
Estimated equity at sale = expected sale price − remaining loan balance.

Positive equity reduces the next purchase’s cash requirement. Negative equity increases it. A long loan can keep the balance above the car’s value for longer, increasing the risk that you must carry debt into another vehicle.
5. Get vehicle-specific insurance and fuel numbers
Request quotes using the exact vehicle identification number (VIN), coverage limits, deductible, drivers and address. Use the same coverage for both cars so the comparison is fair. For fuel, multiply your expected annual miles by a realistic cost-per-mile estimate, then multiply by the ownership years. Keep fuel prices as an explicit assumption because they change.
6. Price maintenance, repairs and warranty coverage
For a new car, obtain the scheduled-maintenance requirements and identify what the written warranty covers, for how long and with what exclusions. For a used car, add the inspection’s urgent and near-term recommendations, tire and brake condition, and any service that is due by mileage or time. Do not treat a dealer’s verbal promise as warranty coverage; put the coverage and its duration in writing.
7. Calculate the result and stress-test it
Sum cash paid during the period, including the down payment and loan payments, insurance, fuel, maintenance and repairs. Subtract expected sale proceeds, or subtract the sale proceeds and add any remaining payoff if the loan is not finished. Run at least three variations:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Base case using your best current quotes and inspection information.
- Higher-repair case for the used car or an older new car outside its warranty.
- Lower-resale case or an earlier sale that leaves a loan balance.
If a small change in repairs, insurance or resale reverses the winner, treat the options as financially close and choose based on cash reserves, reliability evidence, warranty value and personal fit.
When a new car can be the better budget choice
Lower uncertainty during the warranty period
A new vehicle normally has no prior owner, an established maintenance schedule and a manufacturer’s written warranty. That can make monthly expenses easier to plan during the years covered by the warranty. Verify the actual coverage, exclusions, mileage limits and required maintenance; “new” does not mean every repair is free.
Financing or operating advantages
A manufacturer or lender may offer terms that differ from a used-car offer. Compare the complete APR and finance charge rather than assuming new-car financing is cheaper. A new car may also have lower fuel use or maintenance needs than a particular used candidate, but those savings must come from your vehicle-specific estimates.

Longer planned ownership
If you intend to keep the car well beyond the loan term, paying for the newest condition may buy more remaining useful life. That is a planning judgment, not a universal cost rule: include the additional depreciation and the resale value you expect at the eventual sale.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →When a used car can be the better budget choice
Lower purchase amount and potentially lower depreciation exposure
A used car usually has a lower transaction price than a comparable new one, which can reduce the amount financed. Its earlier depreciation may also mean less value is lost during your ownership. Do not assume this without checking the specific model, mileage, condition and expected resale value.
Condition can erase the apparent savings
Repairs, tires, brakes, deferred maintenance, a missing service history or an unfavorable loan offer can consume the price difference. Budget for identified work before you decide that the used car is cheaper. A low-priced vehicle that needs immediate work may require more cash in the first month than a higher-priced vehicle under warranty.
Age, mileage and history must be evaluated together
Ask how the vehicle was used, inspect it independently, review available history and confirm open recalls or warranty information through appropriate records. Mileage alone does not establish condition, and a newer used car is not automatically a better value than an older one with complete maintenance documentation.
Financing: avoid the monthly-payment trap
The FTC’s used-car guidance says to identify the exact price, total sales price with financing, finance charge, APR, number of payments and payment amount before signing. Request those figures in writing and compare offers from multiple lenders.
For example, an offer with a smaller payment can still cost more if it extends the term. It can also leave you owing more than the car is worth when you need to sell. Compare:
- APR and the number of months.
- Amount financed after down payment, trade-in and add-ons.
- Finance charge and total of payments.
- Early-payoff terms and any optional products included in the balance.
- Estimated loan balance at your planned sale date.
Do not sign until the contract’s figures match the offer you agreed to. A payment quote that changes after the vehicle price, term or add-ons change is not an apples-to-apples comparison.

Used-car inspection and buyer protection
Arrange an independent inspection
The FTC recommends an independent inspection. Choose a mechanic who is not controlled by the seller and authorize a road test and lift inspection where appropriate. Ask for a written report that distinguishes safety problems, immediate repairs and items that can wait.
- Confirm the VIN on the car, title and contract.
- Check for warning lights, unusual noises, fluid leaks, uneven tire wear and evidence of accident or flood damage.
- Review service records and compare them with the vehicle’s mileage.
- Ask what maintenance is due next and obtain a written estimate for every recommended repair.
- Use an OBD-II code reader only as a supplementary check; it cannot replace a mechanic’s inspection and can miss problems or recently cleared codes.
Make the inspection conditional on a purchase agreement when possible. If the seller refuses an independent inspection, treat that refusal as a risk factor rather than assuming the car is sound.

Read the Buyers Guide and warranty documents
Dealer-sold used cars generally display an FTC Buyers Guide identifying whether the car is sold “as is” or with a warranty. Ensure the Buyers Guide and sales contract agree, and obtain every warranty document. If a manufacturer’s warranty may remain, verify it by VIN with the manufacturer or an authorized source. A service contract is not the same as a manufacturer’s warranty; check the provider, exclusions, deductible and claims process.
Do not assume a three-day cancellation right
Federal law does not require a three-day cancellation period for a dealer car purchase. State law and a dealer’s voluntary return policy may provide different rights. Read the contract before signing and check the rules that apply in your state; do not drive away assuming you can simply return the car.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How much can you afford to borrow?
Start with a total monthly ownership limit that leaves room for housing, food, utilities, debt payments, savings and an emergency fund. Subtract estimated insurance, fuel, maintenance and repairs from that limit. The remainder is the maximum comfortable loan payment—not necessarily the payment a lender is willing to approve.
Then test the payment against your cash position. Registration, taxes, insurance down payments, tires and a first repair can arrive immediately. CFPB affordability guidance recommends including the vehicle price, add-ons, taxes, title and fees, financing rate and term, plus ongoing expenses such as insurance and maintenance. Compare lender offers rather than accepting the first approval.
If the only way to meet your payment target is to extend the term substantially, lower the vehicle price, increase the down payment only if you retain adequate reserves, or postpone the purchase. A payment that fits only by creating long-term negative-equity risk is not an affordable payment.

Illustrative five-year comparison
The figures below demonstrate the method only. They are hypothetical entries, not market averages, current rate claims or a recommendation.
| Five-year item | Illustrative new car | Illustrative used car |
|---|---|---|
| Negotiated price plus taxes and fees | $30,800 | $23,200 |
| Down payment | $4,000 | $4,000 |
| Amount financed | $26,800 | $19,200 |
| Illustrative financing assumption | 6% APR for 60 months | 9% APR for 60 months |
| Approximate total loan payments | $31,080 | $23,880 |
| Insurance over five years | $7,500 | $8,000 |
| Fuel over five years | $8,000 | $8,500 |
| Maintenance and repairs over five years | $3,000 | $6,000 |
| Expected sale value at year five | $15,000 | $10,000 |
| Illustrative net ownership cost | $38,580 | $40,380 |
In this made-up scenario, the new car wins despite its higher purchase price because the assumed financing, insurance, fuel, repair and resale figures offset that difference. Change any of those inputs and the result can reverse. The exercise shows why a sticker-price comparison is incomplete.
Common mistakes that produce the wrong answer
Comparing different vehicles without adjusting for use
A subcompact used car and a new three-row SUV do not provide the same utility. Compare vehicles that meet the same transportation need, then account for safety equipment, cargo, seating and fuel requirements.
Using a generic TCO result as your personal forecast
Calculator assumptions are useful for consistent comparisons, but your mileage, location, insurance, taxes, credit and maintenance differ. Edmunds’ documented assumptions are a baseline, not your contract or budget.
Leaving add-ons and fees outside the worksheet
Service contracts, accessories, protection products, documentation fees and registration costs affect both the amount financed and the total paid. Require an itemized buyer’s order.
Treating an inspection or history report as a guarantee
A history report can omit events, and a scan tool cannot evaluate every mechanical or structural problem. Combine records with an independent inspection and a written repair estimate.
Ignoring the sale date
Buying with a long loan and selling early can create negative equity even when the payment feels manageable. Estimate the balance at the date you may realistically change cars.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA decision checklist
- Have both vehicles been priced with taxes, title, registration, fees and add-ons?
- Do you have written APR, term, finance charge and total-payment figures from more than one lender?
- Did you use the same ownership period and annual mileage for both cars?
- Are insurance quotes based on the exact vehicles and your actual address and drivers?
- For the used car, is there an independent inspection and a written repair budget?
- Do the Buyers Guide, warranty documents and sales contract agree?
- Have you estimated resale value and the loan balance at the same future date?
- Does the payment leave room for fuel, insurance, maintenance, emergencies and other debts?
- Does the result remain acceptable if repairs cost more or resale is lower than expected?
Choose the option that remains affordable under a reasonable stress case, not the one that wins only under optimistic assumptions. If neither survives the worksheet, reduce the price range, increase the available cash only without exhausting reserves, or wait.
