CDK said substantially all dealer connections were restored by July 2, 2024, with the remaining systems expected online by July 3–4. The incident remains significant because it disrupted the software used by roughly 15,000 dealerships in the United States and Canada and later led to notices that some personal-information files had been accessed.
What happened to CDK Global?
CDK Global detected a cybersecurity incident on June 19, 2024, and shut down most of its systems. A second incident occurred later that day, prompting CDK to keep the majority of its platform offline while it investigated and secured its environment.
On June 20, CDK told dealerships that its systems would remain unavailable for at least that day. At that point, the company had no estimated restoration time, and its customer-support teams were also unavailable as part of the security response.
CDK later described the event as a “cyber ransom event.” Security researchers and media reports linked the attack to the BlackSuit ransomware group, but CDK did not publicly confirm that attribution. Reports also said the attackers demanded millions of dollars, although CDK did not disclose a ransom amount in the statements cited at the time.

Why one software outage affected so many dealerships
CDK’s Dealer Management System is not simply a vehicle listing website. It connects many of the routine processes that keep a dealership running, including:
- Customer appointments and relationship-management records
- Vehicle sales and financing workflows
- Deal paperwork and delivery documents
- Inventory records and vehicle status updates
- Service scheduling and repair documentation
- Parts operations and accounting
- Store profitability and employee-compensation tracking
When that central system went offline, dealers lost access to information and workflows used by sales departments, finance offices, service drives, parts counters and back-office staff. A dealership could still have cars on the lot and employees at work, but ordinary transactions became much slower and more difficult to document.
How dealerships kept operating
The outage did not close every CDK customer or stop all dealership activity. Several large dealer groups said their stores remained open, using alternative systems and manual procedures. Employees reported returning to paper forms, spreadsheets, email and other temporary tools.
Those workarounds could allow a dealer to continue selling a vehicle or accepting a service customer, but they introduced extra steps and a greater risk of duplicated or missing information. Staff had to record details outside the normal platform and later reconcile those records when systems came back online.

Common effects included:
- Delayed deliveries: Finalizing a deal and producing the necessary delivery paperwork took longer.
- Slower financing: Sales and finance employees had to work around unavailable digital processes.
- Inventory problems: Dealers had difficulty updating whether vehicles were available, sold, in transit or awaiting preparation.
- Service disruption: Appointment scheduling and repair-history documentation became more labor-intensive.
- Registration delays: Some registration-related and administrative tasks were harder to complete or verify.
- Back-office work: Accounting, payroll-related records, commissions and store-performance reporting were affected.
The exact experience varied by dealership. A store with separate manufacturer tools, functioning local systems or a well-developed manual fallback could continue more smoothly than one that relied heavily on CDK for every department.
What the outage meant for car shoppers
For customers, the most visible symptoms were delays rather than a universal shutdown. A buyer might still be able to test-drive and agree on a vehicle, but completing the purchase could take longer. A dealer might need to verify pricing, financing, trade-in information or delivery documents manually.
Service customers could face similar friction. A dealership might still accept a vehicle for repair, but retrieving prior service records, confirming appointments or updating the repair order could require paper notes and phone calls. Customers should not assume that a delayed response necessarily meant the store had lost interest; employees were often working around unavailable systems.
If a transaction took place during the outage, keeping copies of signed documents, agreed pricing, repair estimates and payment records was especially important. Customers should also confirm how the dealership would provide final paperwork, registration updates and warranty documentation once its systems were restored.

Was customer data stolen?
Early reports were careful because CDK had not initially determined whether data had been exfiltrated. It would therefore be inaccurate to say from the outset that no information was accessed.
Later CDK data-breach notices said an unauthorized third party obtained files containing information related to some vendors and CDK’s corporate predecessor. The Massachusetts notice identified the affected information as:
- Name
- Business or personal address
- Business tax-identification number or Social Security number
CDK said it had no indication of identity theft or fraud connected to the incident and offered affected individuals 24 months of single-bureau credit monitoring. The notice did not establish that every dealership customer was affected, nor did it confirm that all data categories mentioned in lawsuits were compromised.
Some lawsuits alleged exposure of information such as driver’s-license details, financial-account data or employment history. Those are allegations in legal complaints, not categories that should automatically be presented as confirmed findings by CDK.

When was the CDK outage resolved?
CDK restored its services in stages. On July 2, 2024, the company said “substantially all dealer connections” were live on its Dealer Management System. It expected the remaining dealers to be connected by late July 3 or early July 4.
That timeline is important when describing the incident today. Reports published on June 20 accurately described an ongoing outage with no restoration estimate at that moment, but the outage did not last indefinitely. The main disruption was substantially resolved within roughly two weeks of the initial shutdown, although dealerships still had to reconcile manual work and delayed transactions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the CDK attack exposed about dealership technology
The incident demonstrated how dependent many dealerships are on a small number of software providers. A single platform outage reached far beyond a dealership’s sales website: it affected customer records, service operations, vehicle inventory, financing, accounting and compliance work.
It also showed why dealerships need tested fallback procedures. Paper forms and spreadsheets can keep a store functioning temporarily, but they do not replace a connected system that validates data and shares updates between departments. After an outage, the difficult work is not only restoring access; it is checking that every manually created deal, repair order, inventory change and customer record has been entered correctly.

For car buyers, the practical lesson is to ask specific questions when a dealership reports a system problem: Can the store complete the sale today? Which documents will be provided immediately? When will registration and financing paperwork be finalized? How will service records or warranty documents be delivered? Clear answers are more useful than assuming that every dealership has stopped operating.
FAQ
Did the CDK cyberattack shut down all U.S. car dealerships?
No. The incident affected dealerships that used CDK systems, but many stores stayed open with paper forms, spreadsheets and other alternative procedures. Sales and service operations were often slower rather than completely stopped.
How long did the CDK outage last?
CDK detected the incidents on June 19, 2024. It said substantially all dealer connections were restored by July 2, with remaining connections expected by July 3–4. Individual dealerships may have needed additional time to reconcile manual records and delayed work.
Was personal information exposed in the CDK breach?
Later CDK breach notices said an unauthorized party obtained files containing information related to some individuals. The Massachusetts notice listed names, addresses and business tax-identification numbers or Social Security numbers. It did not confirm that every dealership customer was affected or that every data category alleged in lawsuits was compromised.

Was BlackSuit confirmed as the ransomware group behind the attack?
No. Security researchers and media reports linked the incident to BlackSuit, but CDK did not publicly confirm that attribution in the cited reporting. It is more accurate to describe the group as reportedly linked to or attributed by security researchers.
The Bottom Line
The June 2024 CDK cyberattack disrupted core sales, service, inventory and accounting functions at dealerships across the U.S. and Canada, forcing many employees back to paper-based processes. It did not close every dealership, and CDK had restored substantially all dealer connections by July 2–4, 2024. The later data-breach notices also mean that “no data was accessed” is no longer an accurate summary, while claims that every dealership customer’s information was stolen remain unverified.
