The McLaren W1 pairs a twin-turbo V8 with an electric motor, sending 1,275 PS to the rear wheels. Its £2 million price is an approximate launch-era framing, not a confirmed current transaction price. In the photos, look beyond the dramatic bodywork: the W1’s defining details are its active aerodynamics, track-focused proportions and bespoke interior possibilities.
What the McLaren W1 looks like up close
The W1 is shaped around airflow as much as appearance. Its active aerodynamic elements and extended rear section are functional parts of the car’s design, rather than simply styling flourishes. McLaren calls the moving rear element the Active Long Tail: in race mode, it extends by 300 mm.
That mechanism is part of a broader ground-effect aero package. McLaren quotes 1,000 kg of downforce for the track-oriented configuration it describes; that figure should not be read as applying to the car in its road configuration. The company also describes race-mode chassis settings, underscoring the distinction between the road-going car and its more aggressive track setup. These are manufacturer claims, not independent test measurements. McLaren W1 specifications.
How the W1’s hybrid powertrain works
At the heart of the W1 is a 4.0-litre, 90-degree twin-turbo V8 paired with an electric module. McLaren lists an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission with E-Reverse, and power goes to the rear wheels. The hybrid system is designed around high performance; McLaren quotes an electric range of less than 2 km, so the W1 is not an electric car for meaningful everyday journeys.

McLaren’s published figures are 1,275 PS (1,258 bhp) and 1,340 Nm (988 lb-ft). It quotes 0–100 km/h in 2.7 seconds, 0–200 km/h in 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph). Each is a manufacturer-published specification, not an independently verified measurement. The figures describe the W1’s capability, but without a consistent rival-car dataset they do not establish that it leads its class.
What the £2m price represents
T3’s feature frames the W1 at £2 million, and an Autocar 2026 review search result also uses that price figure. Treat £2m as an approximate editorial price reference, not a confirmed current asking price: the available information does not establish present ordering availability, a specific car’s transaction price or its resale value.

Personalisation can also make the final specification individual. T3 reports that McLaren Special Operations (MSO) offers “virtually unlimited bespoke options” for the interior. That is T3’s description; it does not establish what any particular option costs or whether it changes the price of a specific W1.
Why the reveal carried extra significance
T3 reports that McLaren revealed the W1 on the 50th anniversary of the company securing its first Formula One Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships. That anniversary gives the launch a clear motorsport connection, while the car’s rear-wheel-drive layout, race-mode chassis settings and track-focused aerodynamic configuration make its performance brief explicit.
