There is no single price to charge a Tesla: the cost depends on how many kilowatt-hours (kWh) you add, where you charge, and the electricity rate in effect. As a U.S. benchmark, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported a preliminary 2025 average residential electricity price of 17.30 cents per kWh. Multiply your billed charging energy by your own rate for a useful estimate; use your Tesla Account for actual Supercharger charges.
How to calculate the cost to charge a Tesla
For a charging session, use this simple calculation:
Billed kWh × applicable electricity rate = session electricity cost
For example, at the EIA’s preliminary 2025 U.S. residential benchmark of $0.173 per kWh, each 10 kWh billed would cost about $1.73. That is an illustration, not a quote for a particular Tesla or utility customer. Substitute the kWh billed for your session and the rate on your own bill or utility plan.

A full charge cannot be priced accurately from the vehicle make alone. The result depends on the model and trim, how much energy the battery needs between the starting and ending charge levels, charging losses, and the applicable tariff. A partial top-up and a near-empty-to-full charge are different amounts of electricity.
How much does it cost to charge a Tesla at home?
Use the residential rate that applies when the car charges, not a generic national figure. The EIA’s 2026 report lists the 2025 annual average U.S. residential price as 17.30 cents per kWh; the table identifies 2025 values as preliminary. Actual rates vary by utility, location, and plan. Time-of-use plans charge different prices at different times. If your utility offers an EV-specific plan, check its eligibility rules, hours, and actual off-peak rate before estimating savings. Tesla says home charging is often the cheapest option and that savings may increase with an EV time-of-use plan where available; that is general guidance, not a guarantee for every household. How much does it cost to charge a Tesla at a Supercharger?
Supercharger pricing is not the same as a residential electricity rate. For your actual session expense, check the Tesla Account or app billing record; Tesla says Supercharger costs in Charge Stats are drawn from Tesla Account billing data. Do not multiply Supercharger kWh by the national residential average and treat that as the amount charged.
Tesla’s “Total Spent on Charging” combines home, Supercharger, and other-location costs. It is useful for tracking overall charging spend, but home figures depend on the rate plan entered and charging away from home is billed separately. Tesla Charge Stats details.

Why the U.S. average is only a starting point
The EIA’s 2026 explainer reports a 2025 annual average of 13.63 cents per kWh across all U.S. customer classes, compared with 17.30 cents per kWh for residential customers. These figures describe different customer groups and should not be interchanged. The explainer’s 2025 state range—from 8.20 cents per kWh in North Dakota to 35.72 cents per kWh in Hawaii—is also for all customer types, not a residential-only state comparison. Estimate your monthly Tesla charging expense
A monthly estimate should reflect your actual charging energy and where you charge rather than assume one full battery refill per month. Separate home charging from Supercharging and other paid locations:
- Home: multiply the home-charging kWh by the applicable utility rate, including any time-of-use period.
- Supercharging: use the session charges recorded in your Tesla Account or app.
- Other locations: include actual charges from those locations rather than assigning them the home rate.
For a cost-per-mile estimate, divide the relevant charging expense by the miles driven over the same period. Treat the result as an estimate: Tesla describes added miles as based on charged energy and model/trim efficiency in ideal regional driving conditions, and notes that displayed added miles may differ from odometer mileage because of road conditions or increased use. An ideal-condition range estimate is not a promise of real-world miles per kWh. Tesla Charge Stats details.
Home charging equipment is a separate cost
Charging equipment and installation are setup expenses, separate from the recurring electricity bill. Tesla’s accessed Home Charging page listed these hardware prices; displayed prices can change, so check Tesla’s page for current amounts before buying:
| Equipment | Displayed price | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile Connector | $300 | Can be used with a suitable existing outlet. |
| Wall Connector | $585 | Optional; Tesla says a Wall Connector is not required for home charging. |
| Universal Wall Connector | $660 | Listed by Tesla as another home-charging hardware option. |
Check Tesla’s Home Charging page for current hardware details and prices. Installation is an additional variable: Tesla says cost depends on the home electrical system and installation type and advises getting an installer quote. A standard 120 V household outlet with Mobile Connector can provide about 2–3 miles of charge per hour; a suitable existing 240 V outlet can provide up to 30 miles per hour for listed configurations. Those are charging-rate details, not electricity-cost savings. Tesla Mobile Connector support.

- Your Tesla model and trim.
- The billed kWh for the session or your charging use over a month.
- Your utility rate and, if applicable, the time-of-use period.
- Your mix of home, Supercharger, and other charging locations.
- Any one-time hardware or installation expenses, if you want to include setup costs separately.
