What the current evidence means
The most important distinction is between a directory entry and a live manufacturer network. BikeWale’s page, accessed on 13 October 2026, says that 43 authorised UM service centres operate across 37 Indian cities. The page names cities including Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Chennai, Hyderabad and Lucknow, among others. It does not verify that every listed outlet is open now, still accepts UM motorcycles, or remains authorised.

That directory claim conflicts with stronger evidence about UM’s Indian business. Autocar India reported on 11 October 2019 that UM had halted its India operations and stopped production at its Kashipur plant after reports of showroom closures. A Lok Sabha answer dated 9 February 2021, using information supplied by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), included UM Motorcycles among automobile companies that had closed operations during the preceding five years.

UM’s international dealer page currently presents a country selector showing the United Kingdom; it is not an India-specific locator. Consequently, there is no evidence here of a currently maintained, official India-wide UM workshop network. A listed address may still be useful, but only after local confirmation.

How to check a listed UM workshop before travelling
Use the following process for any centre found in a directory, search result, old invoice or rider discussion. The checks are practical safeguards prompted by the conflict between the surviving directory and the reported shutdown; they are not a published UM procedure.
- Record the motorcycle precisely. Write down the model name, displacement, variant, model year, registration year and vehicle identification number (VIN). “UM bike” is not enough: a Commando, Renegade or another variant may require different parts, diagnostic information and service intervals.
- Call the outlet before setting out. Ask whether the physical workshop is open on the day you plan to visit and whether it currently accepts UM motorcycles. Request the name of the person confirming this, the workshop’s full address and a working telephone number. An unanswered call, a disconnected number or a generic reception answer is a reason to keep verifying, not a reason to assume the centre is closed.
- Confirm your model and year. Read the exact model and variant to the service adviser. Ask whether technicians have worked on that version and whether they will inspect it before ordering parts. A centre that once handled UM motorcycles may no longer have the staff, tools or information for every year.
- Check parts before booking transport. Give the adviser a list of the parts likely to be needed, or describe the symptoms if the fault is not yet diagnosed. Ask which items are physically in stock, which can be ordered, the source of each part, and the expected lead time. Do not assume that a “service centre” listing means consumables, bodywork, electrical components or engine parts are available.
- Ask what proves current authorisation. Request evidence that the business is currently authorised by UM, such as a current authorisation document, a manufacturer contact who can confirm the relationship, or recent UM service documentation showing the outlet’s present status. An old signboard, archived social-media post or historic invoice establishes that the shop once dealt with the brand, not that it is authorised today.
- Get the visit terms in writing. Ask for a written estimate that identifies the diagnostic charge, labour, parts, taxes, storage fees and any warranty offered on the workshop’s own work. Have the estimate state whether parts are new, used, refurbished or sourced from another motorcycle. This protects you if the repair expands after inspection.
- Reconfirm shortly before departure. Call again on the morning before a long ride. Confirm that the same technician, the agreed parts and the workshop opening hours are still available. A previously answered telephone is not proof that the premises will be staffed when you arrive.
Questions to ask on the phone
A short, specific conversation produces more useful information than asking only, “Do you service UM?” Use a checklist:
- Is the workshop physically open and accepting customer motorcycles now?
- Do you work on my exact UM model, variant and year?
- Can you diagnose the fault, or do you only perform routine maintenance?
- Which parts for my motorcycle are available today?
- Can you obtain the remaining parts, and from where?
- Will you provide part numbers, a written estimate and an itemised invoice?
- What evidence shows that your UM authorisation is current?
- What warranty, if any, applies to your labour and the parts you fit?
- How long will diagnosis and repair take, and can you store the motorcycle securely?
Keep the answers, the caller’s name and the date in your records. If the workshop will not identify the parts source or refuses an itemised invoice, consider that a warning sign even if the location appears in a directory.

Directory lead versus independent motorcycle workshop
If no listed centre can be confirmed, an experienced independent motorcycle workshop may be the only practical route for diagnosis or repair. Independence does not imply UM authorisation, access to genuine parts or the ability to preserve a manufacturer warranty. Choose it on documented capability rather than on a sign, a forum recommendation or proximity alone.

Parts and diagnosis: avoid a second breakdown
When a manufacturer network is uncertain, parts identification becomes as important as finding a mechanic. Give the workshop the VIN and the exact variant, but do not rely on a VIN alone to prove that a replacement part fits an India-market motorcycle. Ask the workshop to write the part number or a clear description on the estimate before authorising work.
For electrical, fuel-injection, braking and suspension faults, ask what testing will be done before replacement. A workshop should be able to explain whether it will inspect wiring, connectors, sensors, fluid condition, mechanical wear or stored diagnostic information. You can decline a parts swap that is not supported by a diagnosis and request the removed component back where practical.

For routine work, record the oil grade and quantity, filter specification, brake-fluid type, chain adjustment and torque-related work shown on the invoice. Those records help another mechanic continue the repair if the first workshop cannot obtain a part. They also provide evidence of what was actually fitted.
What the available UM manual does—and does not—prove
A UM-branded owner manual located for the Renegade 300 Euro 5 explains dealer registration of a sale with current owner information for warranty activation. That document is a technical reference for the named model and emissions version. It does not establish that the manual applies to every Indian-market Renegade, that India has active warranty coverage, or that any Indian dealer is currently operating.
Before using a manual to order parts or follow a maintenance procedure, match its model designation, engine specification, emissions version and market to the motorcycle’s documents and VIN. A manual for a Euro 5 version may not describe an earlier Indian-market configuration. If the exact manual cannot be confirmed, ask the workshop to verify capacities, adjustment values and part numbers from a source that identifies your motorcycle correctly.

Warranty, recalls and safety decisions
Do not promise yourself a warranty outcome based on a directory listing or an old dealer relationship. The available evidence does not establish current India warranty coverage, a successor UM service network or a reliable India parts channel. Ask any workshop to state in writing whether it is making a warranty submission, performing paid work, or simply diagnosing the motorcycle.
For brakes, steering, tyres, fuel leaks, frame damage and overheating, prioritise safe transport over riding to a distant address. Use a recovery vehicle if the motorcycle may be unsafe. A workshop’s willingness to accept the bike is not a safety inspection; obtain a written diagnosis and ask what conditions would make the motorcycle unsafe to ride away.

Community questions, such as riders asking about a UM Commando service centre in Bengaluru, show that owners are looking for local help. They do not verify that a named workshop is open, authorised, equipped for that motorcycle or able to obtain parts. Ask for current evidence instead of relying on an old post.
Checklist to save before you leave
- Model, variant, year, registration details and VIN written down.
- Photographs of the motorcycle, VIN plate, warning lights and damaged areas.
- Symptoms, when they began and any recent repairs recorded in order.
- Workshop name, address, contact person, call date and confirmed opening time.
- Written confirmation that the workshop accepts your exact model and year.
- Parts list with stock status, source and estimated arrival date.
- Itemised estimate covering diagnosis, labour, parts, taxes and storage.
- Proof or explanation of any claimed current UM authorisation.
- Recovery plan if the motorcycle is unsafe or the workshop cannot complete the job.
The sensible outcome is not to assume that a directory has 43 functioning centres, nor to dismiss every listed business automatically. Use the listing to find possible contacts, then require current confirmation of operation, model capability, parts access and authorisation before committing time or money.
