Uber’s Planned Premium Robotaxi Is Coming to the San Francisco Bay Area—but It Is Not Available Yet

Uber’s Lucid-Nuro robotaxi is planned for the San Francisco Bay Area later in 2026, but testing and permits are not the same as public availability.

Uber, Lucid, and Nuro are planning a premium robotaxi service for the San Francisco Bay Area later in 2026. The service will use autonomous Lucid Gravity SUVs powered by Nuro’s Level 4 driving system and booked through Uber. However, Uber’s current San Francisco consumer page says autonomous rides are not yet available, so this remains a planned launch—not a public service riders can book today.

What Uber is building

The three-company partnership divides the robotaxi business into distinct roles:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Uber will provide the app, rider relationship, trip matching, fleet-management systems, support, and in-cabin experience.
  • Lucid will supply the vehicle platform, initially the Gravity electric SUV.
  • Nuro will provide the Nuro Driver autonomous-driving system, sensors, validation, and autonomous operations.
  • Fleet operators will own or operate the vehicles rather than individual Uber drivers.

Riders are expected to request the service through Uber rather than a separate Lucid or Nuro app. The Gravity vehicles will be modified with autonomous hardware and software; they are not ordinary retail Lucid SUVs with an autonomous mode simply activated. Lucid’s original partnership announcement describes Nuro Driver as a Level 4 system.

Why San Francisco matters

San Francisco is strategically important because it is part of Waymo’s established Bay Area operating market. Selecting the region gives Uber a high-profile opportunity to put its own autonomous service in front of the same technically sophisticated ride-hailing customers who already know Waymo.

The choice also has operational logic. Nuro is based in the Bay Area, while Lucid has an established Silicon Valley presence. The region offers a dense ride-hailing market—but also difficult streets, complex curb access, construction, steep grades, unusual intersections, and demanding weather and traffic conditions.

This is not necessarily a breakdown of Uber’s relationship with Waymo. Uber and Waymo have already made Waymo rides available through Uber in some markets, including Phoenix. The competitive comparison is between Uber’s new Lucid-Nuro service and Waymo’s existing Bay Area operation. San Francisco was identified as the first market in October 2025.

What “premium” means

The premium label is based primarily on the vehicle and positioning. The Lucid Gravity is a large, upscale electric SUV rather than a small purpose-built taxi. Uber and its partners have also described a differentiated cabin experience focused on comfort and personalization.

That does not establish the final consumer details. The companies have not confirmed a final Uber ride-category name, fare premium, seating configuration, service boundary, or eligibility rules in the sources reviewed. It is therefore too early to call the service Uber Black, Comfort, UberX, or any other existing category.

A premium SUV could appeal to airport travelers, groups, and riders who want more space. It could also create higher costs for energy, tires, maintenance, charging, and curb usage than a smaller robotaxi. Whether riders value the cabin enough to pay more—or whether Uber prices it close to existing categories—will be important to the business case.

Timeline: announcement to planned launch

  1. July 17, 2025: Uber, Lucid, and Nuro announced a robotaxi partnership targeting at least 20,000 vehicles over six years and a first major U.S. city in 2026. Lucid announcement
  2. October 29, 2025: San Francisco was reported as the first launch market.
  3. December 2025: Nuro said autonomous on-road testing began in the Bay Area with safety operators. Nuro CES announcement
  4. January 5, 2026: Production-intent vehicles and Uber’s cabin experience were shown at CES.
  5. April 2026: Lucid said Nuro received a California DMV permit for driverless testing.
  6. April 14, 2026: The broader commitment expanded to at least 35,000 vehicles, including future Lucid Midsize vehicles. Uber’s total investment in Lucid was reported at $500 million after an additional $200 million investment. Lucid’s Q1 results
  7. Later in 2026: The companies continue to describe a planned San Francisco Bay Area commercial launch.
  8. Mid-2027: Houston is expected to become the second market. Uber’s Houston announcement

These milestones should not be treated as interchangeable. Testing with a safety operator, driverless testing under a permit, employee or partner rides, limited paid rides, and scaled public availability are separate stages.

What riders can expect

Once the service is approved and available, the likely experience will be:

  1. Request an eligible trip in the Uber app.
  2. Receive an autonomous vehicle only when the route, location, vehicle, and operating conditions qualify.
  3. See trip and pricing information in the app, subject to Uber’s final San Francisco setup.
  4. Use in-cabin controls and rider-support features during the trip.
  5. Use a human-driven Uber when an autonomous vehicle is unavailable or unsuitable.

Uber’s general autonomous-ride guidance says eligible riders in active markets may be matched with an autonomous vehicle and shown an upfront price. Its San Francisco page, however, currently says autonomous rides are not available there and does not confirm that this process is live locally: Uber’s San Francisco autonomous-rides page.

Uber/Lucid/Nuro versus Waymo

Issue Uber/Lucid/Nuro Waymo
Consumer access Uber app Waymo app and selected ride-hailing partnerships
Vehicle Modified Lucid Gravity SUV initially Waymo-equipped vehicles operated within Waymo’s service
Autonomy provider Nuro Waymo
Platform role Uber controls the rider relationship and network; fleets may be Uber- or partner-operated Waymo controls the autonomous-driving service and commercial operation
Bay Area status Planned; not publicly available in San Francisco according to Uber’s current page Established commercial Bay Area presence
Positioning Premium, comfort-oriented Uber category Existing robotaxi service with established local operations

Waymo has a head start in San Francisco-area operations and consumer familiarity. Uber’s counterargument is distribution: it already has the app, demand, payments, support infrastructure, and a large rider base.

There is no reliable current fare comparison for the not-yet-launched Lucid-Nuro service. A January 2026 TechCrunch report citing Obi found simulated average Bay Area trips of $19.69 for Waymo and $17.47 for Uber during its sample period, but those figures were neither a controlled fare test nor a forecast of the eventual premium robotaxi price. The regulatory question

A California DMV permit for driverless testing is not the same as unrestricted permission to carry paying passengers commercially. Before a public launch, the program must satisfy the applicable operational approvals, insurance arrangements, reporting requirements, and local restrictions.

The final service will almost certainly operate within a defined operational design domain. That means a particular geography, road set, speed range, weather envelope, time-of-day policy, and other conditions—not every road in San Francisco or the wider Bay Area.

Likewise, Level 4 does not mean the vehicle can drive anywhere in all conditions. It means the system is designed to perform the driving task within its defined conditions. Safety operators used during testing also do not necessarily mean public vehicles will carry an onboard human driver.

The reviewed sources confirm the testing permit claim as reported by Lucid, but they do not establish the final passenger-service authorization, exact geofence, or complete public safety case. Those details matter more to riders than the partnership announcement itself.

The fleet operation behind the app

This is also a physical fleet project. Vehicles must be charged, cleaned, inspected, repaired, dispatched, and returned to service. Uber has partnered with Hertz affiliate Oro Mobility for vehicle asset management, including charging, maintenance, repairs, cleaning, and depot staffing. The Hertz and Uber announcement says Bay Area services are expected later in 2026.

ArtCreativity Light Up Monster Truck Toys for Toddler Boys, Toy Cars Gift
  • Push-and-Go Friction Drive – Push and release each truck for hands-on monster truck racing; the friction mechanism moves them without batteries, so children can start racing with a simple push.
  • Light Up Toy Cars – An easy on/off switch activates multicolor LED wheels inside the transparent tires, and included batteries light them up out of the package.
  • Kids Hand-Friendly Size – Each truck measures 6.5 × 4 × 3.5 inches and has a chunky shape that's easy for children to grip during hands-on vehicle play.
  • ABS Construction – The ABS shell and reinforced axles support hands-on monster truck play during indoor or outdoor driving and racing.
  • Gift Set for Ages 3+ – Two trucks in different colors support racing or sharing, making this a 3-year-old boy birthday gift; colors may vary among black, red, blue, and yellow.

That operational layer could determine whether the service scales. A robotaxi that spends too much time charging, waiting for cleaning, or undergoing sensor and vehicle maintenance cannot generate as many trips as its headline fleet size suggests. The 35,000-vehicle figure is a long-term, multi-market commitment—not the number expected to operate in San Francisco in 2026.

What could delay or limit the service?

  • Regulatory approval may arrive after the commercial target.
  • Vehicle production or autonomy validation may not scale on schedule.
  • Construction zones, emergency scenes, police directions, temporary closures, and difficult curb locations may restrict service.
  • Heavy rain, fog, smoke, flooding, or unusual nighttime conditions may reduce availability.
  • Premium pricing may limit demand.
  • Large SUVs may carry higher operating and infrastructure costs than smaller robotaxis.
  • Charging, cleaning, repair, depot capacity, and fleet utilization may constrain supply.
  • Waymo’s established local operation may outweigh Uber’s app-distribution advantage.
  • Riders may receive inconsistent experiences as Uber uses different autonomy providers and vehicle types in different cities.

San Francisco riders should also distinguish “the Bay Area launch market” from a confirmed citywide service. The companies have used both San Francisco and San Francisco Bay Area language; neither establishes that the first geofence will include Oakland, San Jose, the entire city, airports, or every surrounding community.

How to try an autonomous ride now

The announced Lucid-Nuro service is not currently a consumer option in San Francisco according to Uber’s latest local page. Readers interested in trying a robotaxi can check Waymo’s official San Francisco service page for current availability and eligibility. They can also monitor Uber’s San Francisco autonomous page for any interest-list or launch updates.
