You can enable Uber’s Waymo or autonomous-vehicle preference and request an eligible ride, but opting in does not reserve a Waymo vehicle or guarantee an autonomous trip.
Waymo’s Austin service operates within a limited, changing territory. A match also depends on the ride category, vehicle availability, and your pickup location. Check Waymo’s current Austin service-area map before relying on the service.

What “exclusively on Uber” means
For public Austin rides, Waymo directs riders to Uber. Your trip request starts in Uber, while Waymo supplies the autonomous vehicle and driving system. This is a city-specific booking arrangement—not a rule that Waymo uses Uber in every market.
Waymo continues to offer direct booking through its own app in some cities. Its current materials identify Austin and Atlanta as partner markets where riders experience Waymo through Uber. How to request a Waymo ride in Austin

Open the Uber app and sign in.

Open Account, then Settings.

Find the autonomous-vehicle setting and turn on the Waymo preference.

Request an eligible Uber ride while you are inside Waymo’s current Austin service area.

If a nearby Waymo vehicle is available, Uber may show you a Waymo offer.

Review the ride details and tap Accept ride if you want the autonomous vehicle.

Waymo’s first-party instructions use slightly different labels, including Account → Settings → Autonomous vehicles → Waymo preference and Account → Settings → Ride Preferences → Autonomous Vehicles → Waymo. The wording can vary by Uber app version and region, so look for the autonomous-vehicle or Waymo preference if the exact path differs.
Which Uber rides can be matched with Waymo?
Waymo lists these eligible categories:
- UberX
- Uber Green, identified as Austin-only on Waymo’s partnership page
- Uber Comfort
- Uber Comfort Electric
Uber’s Austin page uses some different category labels, including Uber Electric, and warns that options vary by region. The exact categories shown to you can also depend on your location, app version, time, and marketplace availability. Do not assume that UberXL, Uber Black, WAV, or every other Uber category can receive a Waymo match.

Turning on the preference improves your chance of being offered an autonomous ride; it does not reserve a Waymo car. Waymo says it cannot guarantee a Waymo match every time.
You may fail to receive a match if:
- Your pickup or destination is outside the current service territory.
- No Waymo vehicle is nearby.
- Available vehicles are already serving other riders.
- Your requested Uber category is not eligible.
- Demand, geography, or time of day limits availability.
If no Waymo vehicle is available, Uber may offer a conventional ride instead. You can decline a Waymo offer or choose a non-autonomous ride before the trip begins. If you need a guaranteed ride or a specific vehicle configuration, treat a standard Uber request—not the Waymo preference—as the dependable fallback.
Where does Waymo operate in Austin?
Waymo does not serve the entire Austin metropolitan area automatically. Its current Austin operation is limited to the territory shown on the official live service-area map, which is labeled May 2026 on the current partnership page. Coverage can change as the service expands.

At launch, Uber described the operating area as 37 square miles extending from Hyde Park through Downtown to Montopolis. That was a March 2025 launch figure, not a reliable description of the current boundary. Waymo announced further Austin expansion in May 2026, so use the live map rather than inferring coverage from the original launch footprint or from neighborhood names.
For airport trips, major events, unusual pickup points, or trips near the edge of the territory, check the map and the Uber app at booking time. Do not assume coverage without seeing an eligible request.
What vehicle will arrive?
Waymo’s Austin Uber fleet consists of all-electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles. Uber says the vehicle’s rooftop dome displays your initials to help you identify the correct car.
Before entering, compare the rooftop initials and vehicle information with the ride details in the Uber app. Do not enter a vehicle that does not match your trip.
Pickup, unlocking, and boarding
The Uber app provides the ride information and pickup instructions. When the Waymo arrives:
- Confirm the vehicle details and rooftop initials.
- Use the Uber app to unlock the doors.
- Use the app to open the trunk if you need it.
- Enter, buckle up, and follow the in-car and app instructions.
Waymo says the vehicle waits seven minutes after arrival for boarding. If you cannot find the car, first recheck its location, initials, and ride details in Uber. If you cannot unlock it or miss the boarding window, use Uber support or the available in-car support options rather than entering another vehicle.
Is it really driverless?
Waymo and Uber describe the Austin service as fully autonomous, with no human driver in the front seat during an ordinary trip. Customer-support staff may be available through the app or the vehicle’s Waymo screen, but that support should not be confused with a person normally steering the car remotely.

Uber’s March 4, 2025 launch announcement said Waymo matches were available at no additional cost at launch. That announcement does not establish a permanent, universal Austin pricing policy.
For any current trip, rely on the fare displayed in Uber before accepting the ride. Prices can depend on the selected category, route, demand, promotions, and other normal marketplace factors. The available sources do not support saying that Waymo is always cheaper, the same price, or more expensive than a human-driven Uber.

Waymo says fully autonomous rides do not require tipping. That is separate from the fare shown by Uber.

Help and common problems
The car is hard to find
Check the pickup pin, vehicle details, and rooftop initials in Uber. Do not enter a vehicle that does not correspond to your trip. Contact Uber support if the vehicle cannot be located.
The car will not unlock
Use the ride screen in Uber and the vehicle’s available support option. Confirm that you are at the correct vehicle and that the app shows the active trip.
The pickup location is wrong
Follow the pickup instructions shown in Uber and move only to a safe, permitted pickup point. If the location cannot be resolved, contact support rather than boarding at an unverified location.

Waymo directs riders to Uber’s Activity tab, the relevant Waymo trip, Ride Details, and Customer Support to report a forgotten item.
The ride was canceled after you missed boarding
Waymo says the vehicle waits seven minutes. If the trip becomes unavailable after that period, use the Uber app’s support flow for the relevant ride.
Accessibility and special requirements
An Uber WAV can be requested in Austin, but Waymo Help explicitly says that the WAV will not be an autonomous vehicle. Riders who need wheelchair accessibility should request the appropriate accessible service rather than assuming the Jaguar I-PACE fleet can accommodate the trip.
Similarly, do not assume that a Waymo vehicle is suitable for a large group, unusually large luggage, or special assistance needs. Check the vehicle and category information in Uber before accepting.
Waymo through Uber versus other options

The practical answer
Waymo is available in Austin, but the Austin experience is an Uber experience: enable the Waymo preference, request an eligible ride inside the current service area, and wait to see whether Uber offers a nearby Waymo vehicle. Accepting the preference is not the same as making a reservation, and a regular Uber may still be the result.
