Uber’s robotaxi partnership with Lucid and Nuro pairs Lucid electric vehicles with Nuro’s autonomous-driving system and Uber’s ride-hailing platform. As of April 14, 2026, Lucid said Uber’s total investment had reached $500 million and the expanded vehicle commitment covered at least 35,000 vehicles. Those are announced investment and purchase commitments—not a count of robotaxis delivered or a confirmation that public service has begun.
What is Uber’s deal with Lucid and Nuro?
Announced on July 17, 2025, the partnership is intended to put Lucid vehicles equipped with Nuro Driver into service through Uber. Uber or third-party fleet partners are expected to own and operate the vehicles, which would be offered exclusively through Uber’s platform. The companies divide the work across the vehicle, autonomy system and rider-facing service.
- Lucid supplies the electric-vehicle platform, initially the Gravity SUV, and integrates robotaxi hardware at the factory. The expanded commitment also includes future Lucid Midsize vehicles.
- Nuro supplies Nuro Driver and leads autonomy development, testing and validation.
- Uber supplies the ride-hailing network and designs the rider experience; Uber or fleet partners handle vehicle ownership and operation.
Uber also named Hertz’s Oro business as a day-to-day asset-management provider for the program, covering work such as charging, maintenance, repairs, cleaning and depot staffing. That is a fleet-operations role, not evidence of a consumer affiliate or booking program. Uber’s July 2025 announcement
How much is Uber investing, and how many vehicles are involved?
The figures have changed since the initial announcement. Lucid’s SEC filing describes the original vehicle commitment as a conditional minimum; the later 2026 announcement expands the stated commitment and total Uber investment.

| Date and source | Investment | Vehicle commitment | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|---|
| July 2025, Lucid SEC filing | $300 million | Minimum 20,000 modified Gravity vehicles | The investment was a private placement by an Uber subsidiary. The minimum purchase commitment runs over six years after production starts and is subject to conditions, including production capacity, quality thresholds and timely order fulfillment. |
| April 14, 2026, Lucid announcement | $500 million total Uber investment in Lucid | At least 35,000 vehicles | The expanded global commitment includes Gravity and future Midsize vehicles. The announced total is not the number already built, delivered or operating. |
The initial investment was intended to support non-recurring engineering costs tied to Gravity Plus design, development, manufacture and delivery, as well as Lucid’s general corporate purposes. The later $500 million figure is the reported total investment as of April 14, 2026, not an additional $500 million on top of the original amount. What will the Lucid robotaxi be like?
The production-intent vehicle shown in January 2026 is based on the Lucid Gravity and combines cameras, lidar and radar, integrated into the vehicle and a roof-mounted halo. The companies said the halo can identify the robotaxi and display rider initials and status. Inside, interactive screens are intended to provide comfort controls, music, a way to contact support and a request-to-stop function; another display shows the vehicle’s perceived surroundings and planned path.

When and where are Uber’s Lucid robotaxis expected to operate?
Bay Area: first planned market
The San Francisco Bay Area was identified as the planned first market, with a launch expected later in 2026, subject to validation. The partners said supervised on-road testing began in December 2025, alongside closed-course testing and simulation. The available specific updates do not confirm that the Bay Area service had launched by October 5, 2026. Uber’s August 2026 results materials referred generally to preparations for several U.S. launches later in the year, but did not confirm a launch for this particular service.
