Uber vehicle eligibility is set locally, not by one nationwide rule. Uber’s general U.S. baseline calls for a vehicle that is 15 years old or newer, has four doors, is in good condition without cosmetic damage, and has no commercial branding. However, the city pages available in 2026 show different age limits: 12 years in Baltimore, 16 years in Miami, and 15 years in Asheville. The exact service you want—such as UberX, Comfort, Black, or Black SUV—can add its own requirements. Check Uber’s city-specific eligible-vehicle list with your location and vehicle before buying, renting, modifying, or inspecting a car.
What Uber generally requires from a vehicle
Uber’s U.S. vehicle page gives a starting point, but warns that requirements can vary by city and change without notice. The general baseline has four parts:

- Model year: The general page says the vehicle must be 15 years old or newer. This is not a universal U.S. cutoff; local pages can permit newer or older vehicles.
- Body style: The vehicle must have four doors.
- Condition: It must be in good working and presentable condition, without cosmetic damage that would affect a passenger’s experience.
- Appearance and branding: It cannot display commercial branding.
These conditions establish a screening baseline rather than approval for every Uber product. A car that passes the general test may still be rejected for a particular city, title history, inspection result, or premium tier.

Uber’s own wording is to “Make sure it meets Uber car requirements in your city.” Use the vehicle selector on the official requirements page after selecting your city and intended service.

UberX requirements
UberX has additional rules beyond the general four-door and condition requirements. The vehicle must have:
- Four doors that open independently for passengers. Two-door cars and vehicles whose passenger doors cannot be opened separately do not meet this UberX condition.
- Five factory-installed seats and seat belts. Added seats or added seat belts are not accepted.
- Working windows and air conditioning.
- No van, box truck, or similar commercial-style body.
- No taxi, government car, or other marked vehicle.
- No salvage or rebuilt title.
- No aftermarket seating modifications, including added seats or belts.
“Five seats” means the manufacturer-installed passenger capacity, not a number created by an owner modification. A vehicle can therefore fail even when it has enough physical space if its seating or restraint system was altered after manufacture.
Different Uber services have different vehicle and driver standards
UberX eligibility does not automatically qualify a vehicle for a higher-priced option. The general U.S. page describes these additional criteria, although the rules shown for your market can differ:

The seven-year age rule, color, interior, insurance, rating, trip-count, and legroom standards are descriptions of Uber’s general page—not a promise that every city applies them identically. Confirm the service option in your market before spending money on a premium vehicle or commercial policy.
Why the model-year cutoff depends on your city
Uber publishes city-specific pages instead of one definitive national age limit. The pages surfaced for these U.S. markets illustrate the difference:

These are examples, not a complete survey of the United States. They demonstrate why a vehicle that qualifies in one market can be too old—or subject to different paperwork—in another. The cutoff can also be tied to the service option rather than only to the city.

Use the city selector on Uber’s Baltimore page, Miami page, or Asheville page as examples of how local rules are displayed, then verify your own market immediately before applying.
Inspections: when they are required and what they cost
Some markets require an inspection before your first trip; others apply different timing or documentation rules. Uber’s inspection guidance does not say that every U.S. vehicle must be inspected before onboarding.
How the inspection process works
- Open the local inspection instructions in your Uber driver account or on the Uber vehicle-inspection page.
- Take the vehicle to a licensed mechanic or other facility accepted in your market.
- Have the mechanic complete the required inspection form and retain the receipt.
- Upload the signed form and receipt through the document-upload flow Uber provides.
- Wait for approval before accepting trips if your market requires a passed inspection before activation.
Uber says a passed inspection form from another rideshare company may be accepted in some situations. Acceptance and expiration are local questions, so do not assume an old form transfers automatically.

Who pays
Uber does not cover a third-party inspection or repairs required to pass. Its general estimate is “around $20-$40, depending on the facility.” That is an Uber estimate, not a guaranteed price; local taxes, labor rates, repeat inspections, and repairs can change the amount.

Registration
Uber says it accepts official or temporary registration documents. The vehicle does not have to be registered in the driver’s name to qualify under the general U.S. guidance. A city page can still require additional matching details, so submit the exact document type requested in your market.
Insurance
When you use your own car, Uber’s driver guidance asks for proof of vehicle insurance. Uber also says, “All partners must maintain their own insurance policy in accordance with state and local laws.” Uber maintains automobile liability insurance on behalf of U.S. partners, but that does not replace the driver’s own policy or any rideshare endorsement and coverage required by law.

Black and Black SUV have an additional commercial-insurance requirement on the general service page. Do not assume ordinary personal coverage qualifies for those options.
Driver documents
Vehicle approval is separate from driver approval. Uber’s U.S. driver page lists a driver’s license, registration, proof of insurance, and screening information among the onboarding materials. Age, license history, background screening, and other driver rules are not vehicle requirements and must be checked separately on Uber’s U.S. driver-requirements page.
A practical eligibility check before you commit money
- Choose the market. Select the city where you expect to take trips, not merely the city where you bought the car.
- Choose the service. Decide whether you are applying for UberX, Comfort, Black, Black SUV, or another locally offered option.
- Check the exact model and trim. Enter the year, make, model, body style, and any relevant trim information in Uber’s current eligible-vehicle tool. Do not rely on a general internet list or a vehicle that was eligible in a previous year.
- Review title and modifications. Confirm that the title is not salvage or rebuilt and that seats, belts, doors, windows, and air conditioning remain factory-compliant and functional.
- Confirm inspection timing. Find out whether an inspection is required before your first trip, where it can be performed, which form is accepted, and how long the approval lasts.
- Prepare documents. Have the requested registration, insurance, license, and inspection receipt or form available as clear, current images.
- Calculate the real cost. Include inspection and repair charges, any required commercial or rideshare coverage, and rental or lease costs if you are not using your own car.
This sequence prevents a common mistake: purchasing a vehicle first and discovering that its model year, title, seating configuration, or local inspection status makes it ineligible.

- Age is measured against the wrong market. A 15-year baseline does not override a city page with a 12-year limit, and a 16-year local allowance does not apply elsewhere.
- The car is cosmetically or mechanically poor. Visible damage, inoperative air conditioning, or nonworking windows can fail condition requirements even when the model year is acceptable.
- The title history is disqualifying. Salvage and rebuilt vehicles are excluded from the general UberX criteria.
- Seats or restraints were added after manufacture. UberX requires factory-installed seats and belts and excludes aftermarket seating changes.
- The vehicle is marked or commercially branded. Taxi, government, and other marked vehicles, as well as commercial branding, conflict with the listed requirements.
- The wrong insurance document was uploaded. A registration image is not proof of insurance, and Uber’s liability coverage does not eliminate the driver’s own insurance obligation.
- An inspection was assumed rather than verified. Some cities require one before activation, while others use different rules; an inspection from another provider may or may not transfer.
- A vehicle was approved for UberX but submitted for a premium tier. Black, Black SUV, and Comfort add appearance, capacity, rating, trip-count, legroom, or insurance criteria.
If an application is rejected, compare the notice with the current city and service page, correct the specific document or vehicle condition, and resubmit through Uber’s document process. Do not treat approval in a different city or under a different service as proof of eligibility.
What to verify on the day you apply
Requirements are volatile policy details. Before submitting an application or signing a lease, open the current Uber page for your city, confirm the model-year cutoff and eligible-model list, read the inspection instructions, and check whether your selected service has extra rating, trip, capacity, appearance, or commercial-insurance rules. Keep screenshots or downloaded copies of the instructions you followed so you can identify which requirement changed if Uber requests a new document later.
