Uber’s Tesla arrangement is a driver-facing program, not a passenger marketing campaign. Uber has said it shares data with Tesla about where Uber drivers most need charging infrastructure, and it offers US Uber drivers incentives toward certain Tesla purchases. Separately, drivers can rent Tesla Model 3 vehicles through Hertz. The idea that riders who experience an electric car will go on to buy one is Uber’s stated rationale. It has not been shown to produce a measurable increase in EV purchases.
What the Tesla partnership includes
Uber first described the Tesla work in its first-quarter 2024 results, released May 8, 2024, where Tesla is listed under original equipment manufacturer agreements. The company described two components:
- Charging-demand data sharing. Uber shares information that helps identify where drivers need charging infrastructure most.
- Purchase incentives for US drivers. Uber offers incentives to US Uber drivers who buy certain Tesla vehicles.
The disclosure does not give complete incentive amounts, the list of eligible models, or how long the arrangement will run. Older promotional posts or past offer terms should not be treated as current terms. Check Uber’s live driver pages before relying on any figure. The primary source is Uber’s Q1 2024 results release.
The popularization argument
At the 2023 Aspen Ideas Festival, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi described Uber as a messenger for electric vehicles. As reported by Axios on June 30, 2023, he argued that a good experience as a passenger could shape a rider’s next car choice. In his words, as reproduced by Axios:

- WORKS WITH EVERY TESLA + OTHER EVs: Built-in Tesla-style plug (NACS standard) connects directly to Tesla Model S, 3, X and Y - and any EV with a NACS port - no adapter needed. The plug even has a button to pop open your Tesla’s charge port. Non-Tesla J1772 vehicles can charge with a NACS-to-J1772 adapter (not included). The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway.
- HARDWIRED - PROFESSIONAL INSTALL: This Level 2 charger is hardwired (not plug-in), so a licensed electrician installs it per National Electrical Code. It delivers up to 48A on a dedicated 60A, 240V circuit - enough to charge most EVs fully overnight. Want more speed? Your can set DIP switches 4 and 5 to unlock 50A on a dedicated 70A circuit. Before ordering, check your car’s port type and that your electrical panel can support the circuit.
- CONTROL FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start and stop charging, set the charging speed (6-48A), get reminders, and track how much energy and money each charge uses. Requires a 2.4 GHz home WiFi network.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
“When you experience an EV as a passenger, the experience tends to be a really good experience because the cars that are out there right now … are awesome vehicles.”
Treat this as the company’s theory. It is a reasonable mechanism: a rider who spends 20 minutes in a quiet, quick electric car may think about the switch differently. But no published Uber data shows that riders who took EV trips went on to buy EVs at a higher rate than riders who did not. Uber’s programs produce figures on trips and rentals, and those figures do not isolate persuasion from other factors such as fuel prices, incentives, or dealer offers. Program figures and what they measure
Uber’s Comfort Electric page, accessed October 8, 2026, reports that nearly 50,000 drivers have rented a Tesla through the program, completing more than 24 million fully electric trips and more than 260 million electric miles. These are Uber’s own cumulative totals. The page does not give a separate publication date, so the figures reflect what Uber reported on that access date rather than an independently audited count.

Tesla is not the only automaker in the program
The governance report says the Tesla collaboration in France, introduced in 2025, sits within a larger portfolio. Uber has also expanded partnerships with Kia and TrueCar, and added collaborations with General Motors in Brazil, Nissan in the US, and OneCarNow in Mexico.
The clearest parallel is Uber’s July 31, 2024 partnership with BYD. The companies set an objective of bringing 100,000 BYD EVs onto the platform in key global markets, starting in Europe and Latin America. The announced work could include driver pricing and financing offers, charging discounts, and future autonomous-capable vehicles. That is a target, not a count of vehicles on the road. The Uber and BYD announcement sets out the scope.

What the evidence does and does not establish
- Established: Uber has a disclosed Tesla arrangement covering charging-demand data sharing and incentives for certain US driver purchases, and it runs a Tesla Model 3 rental program through Hertz.
- Established as Uber’s view: Rider trips are meant to make electric cars familiar and to influence future purchases.
- Not established: That rider exposure increases EV purchases, or that the Tesla incentives drive a measurable change in driver adoption. No controlled comparison has been published.
- Not established: Lifetime operating costs of Tesla ownership, BYD ownership, Hertz rentals, or driving a personal car. Public Uber materials do not provide a like-for-like cost comparison.
Checklist before you act
- Open the Uber Driver app and confirm your city, driver tier, and vehicle eligibility for each offer.
- Read the live terms for the purchase incentive or Hertz rental, including the expiry date and any model list.
- If you are outside New York City and Massachusetts and want Go Electric, check whether applications are open in your area before planning around it.
- For charging, compare the EVgo discount tier you qualify for with the cost of home charging or other public networks.
- Get written terms from the dealer or lender for any TrueCar or Kia offer, and confirm the price and financing separately.
Uber’s programs are most useful to drivers who already plan to buy or rent an EV and want to lower the entry cost. Treat rider exposure as a marketing theory until Uber publishes results that separate it from other causes.
