The flight was a company-announced demonstration. It was not the start of paid passenger service, and no source for this story shows an air taxi carrying paying riders over the Bay Area.
What Joby says happened on March 13
Joby’s announcement describes a single piloted flight. The route it lists began at Oakland International Airport, followed the Bay toward the Golden Gate Bridge, and turned over the Marin Headlands. Joby presented the flight as the kickoff of its 2026 Electric Skies Tour and as a public display of operational readiness. “Operational readiness” is the company’s own phrase. It is not a finding by a regulator.
Independent confirmation of the route from the FAA or Oakland International Airport was not located. The account of the flight therefore rests on Joby’s announcement.
Joby’s founder and CEO, JoeBen Bevirt, framed the flight around local traffic. In the company’s words: “The Bay Area is home to the world’s most innovative companies, including Joby, but it’s also an area with significant traffic and unique geographical barriers.” That is promotional framing from the company, not independent analysis.

What the flight does and does not establish
- It does establish that Joby conducted a piloted flight over the Bay that it chose to publicize, along the route it described.
- It does not establish FAA type certification for the aircraft. Joby’s own progress reporting, discussed below, places certification in its final stage, not complete.
- It does not establish commercial passenger service. The announcement described a piloted flight, and the company’s stated plan begins with pilot-only operations.
- It does not establish a regular route, schedule, or booking option for riders in the Bay Area.
Aircraft specifications Joby publishes
Joby’s Electric Skies page, accessed October 8, 2026, lists a design capacity of one pilot and four passengers, a top speed of up to 200 mph, and a range of 100 miles. These are manufacturer design figures. They have not been independently verified in the reporting behind this article, and they describe the aircraft’s design targets rather than measured performance on the March flight.
How Joby says the path to paying passengers works
Joby’s March 9, 2026 announcement says the company was selected as a partner in multiple winning applications under the White House-backed Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing Integration Pilot Program (eIPP). Joby said eIPP selections covered ten states. Those applications were to move to an Other Transaction Authority (OTA) stage, where agreements and operational details would be finalized. Joby said flights were expected within 90 days of finalized OTA contracts. As of that announcement, the agreements were not yet final.

In its Q2 2026 shareholder letter, dated August 5, 2026, Joby described a progression with three stages. Each depends on extensive FAA involvement and oversight.
Stage 1: pilot-only flights
Only the pilot is aboard. The March 13 flight belongs to this category as Joby described it.

Where Joby says certification stands
Joby’s Q2 2026 shareholder letter reports five electric air taxis flying and places certification in its fifth and final stage, using figures stated as of July 31, 2026. These are company-reported progress claims. Readers who need the exact wording should consult the filing itself. Completing the final stage would still be a regulatory step separate from the eIPP program.
Archer’s separate Northern California plans
Archer Aviation announced a “No Roads” flight tour on September 3, 2026. San Francisco was among the locations the company expected to visit. That is a plan. It is not a record of completed flights, and it has no connection to Joby’s March demonstration.

The traffic statistic in Joby’s announcement
Joby’s March 13 announcement says San Francisco drivers lost an average of 112 hours to traffic in 2025, which it said ranks the city third most congested in the nation. The announcement does not name the original publisher of that figure. Treat it as Joby’s citation until the underlying study or dataset is identified.

Why this matters for Bay Area drivers
The flight is a milestone in Joby’s own program, and it is a useful signal that the company is moving through testing in one of the most constrained airspaces in the country. It is not yet a transportation option. A driver crossing the Golden Gate this year still has no air taxi to take instead, and the timeline for that changing depends on steps Joby itself described as unfinished.
For now, the story to follow is the regulatory one. Watch for finalized eIPP OTA agreements, confirmation of the first non-paying passenger flights, and any FAA statement on the aircraft’s status. Those events would tell you more about passenger service than any single demonstration flight.
