No. Uber and Cruise announced a plan in August 2024 to offer some qualifying Uber rides in driverless Cruise vehicles in 2025, but GM changed course before that proposed launch. In December 2024, GM said it would stop funding Cruise robotaxi development and refocus the work on technology for personal vehicles. The reviewed company and California regulator updates do not report that the Uber-Cruise service launched.
What Uber and Cruise announced
On August 22, 2024, Uber and Cruise announced a multiyear partnership. They said they planned to introduce a dedicated number of Chevrolet Bolt-based autonomous vehicles on Uber’s platform the following year. The announcement did not specify a vehicle count, launch city, exact start date, or fare.
The proposed app experience was limited: when an Uber rider requested a qualifying trip, the app might offer the option of having a Cruise vehicle fulfill it. The announcement did not promise that a robotaxi would be available for every request or that any particular rider would be matched with one. The companies described an intention, not a service already open to customers. Uber and Cruise’s August 2024 announcement
Why the planned 2025 launch changed
On December 10, 2024, General Motors announced that it would stop funding Cruise’s robotaxi development. GM cited the time and resources needed to scale the business and increasing competition, and said it would combine the Cruise and GM technical teams. The company shifted its focus to advanced driver-assistance and autonomous technology for personal vehicles rather than continuing to develop a robotaxi service. GM’s December 2024 announcement

GM completed its acquisition of the remaining Cruise ownership interests on February 4, 2025, making Cruise a wholly owned GM subsidiary. GM said Cruise would collaborate on autonomous and driver-assistance technology for personal vehicles, including integrating Cruise technology into Super Cruise. That update did not announce that Uber rides in Cruise robotaxis would proceed. GM’s February 2025 ownership update
Can you book a Cruise robotaxi through Uber?
The 2024 partnership announcement is not evidence that Cruise robotaxi rides are currently bookable on Uber. It described a possible option for qualifying rides if the planned service launched; it did not give riders a booking date or launch market. The reviewed updates from Uber, GM, and California regulators do not report the partnership launching. Do not treat the old announcement as a current offer in the Uber app.

What California permits do—and do not—show
California has separate regulatory roles for autonomous-vehicle operation and passenger transportation. In an August 2023 explanation, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) said a Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) autonomous-vehicle deployment permit is a prerequisite, while CPUC authority is also required for companies providing public transportation service using autonomous vehicles. Relevant driverless programs also require safety plans. These requirements provide context for a potential California deployment; they do not show that the Uber-Cruise plan secured authorization or launched in any market. CPUC’s August 2023 explanation and permit announcement
The CPUC’s advice-letter status page, last updated August 14, 2026, includes earlier Cruise passenger-service filings, including a 2023 service-expansion entry marked stayed. The page does not report an Uber-Cruise partnership launch. California DMV permit information is a separate snapshot: its testing-with-driver list is dated September 17, 2026, and its deployment-permit list November 21, 2025; Cruise is absent from the permit holders shown. These records are California-specific, and neither historical filings nor a permit list establishes what may be happening in every jurisdiction or every form of vehicle testing. What the announcement cannot establish
Because the proposed deployment did not come with operational details—and the later GM announcements changed the plan—the available statements do not establish a fleet size, service area, fares, rider uptake, or an Uber-Cruise launch date. GM’s 2025 figures for Super Cruise, such as vehicle-model availability and monthly customer miles, concern its driver-assistance system in personal vehicles, not Cruise robotaxi trips, and should not be read as robotaxi operating statistics. The CPUC’s August 2023 statement that it did not yet have data to judge autonomous vehicles against human drivers was a dated regulator comment, not a current safety finding.
