Boom Supersonic’s experimental XB-1 crossed Mach 1 over California’s Mojave Desert on January 28, 2025. Boom reported a peak of Mach 1.122 at 35,290 feet. It was a test flight—not a passenger service—and it did not end the U.S. restrictions on civil supersonic flight over land.
Did XB-1 break the sound barrier?
Yes. Chief Test Pilot Tristan “Geppetto” Brandenburg flew XB-1 from Mojave Air & Space Port on January 28, 2025. Boom reported that the aircraft crossed the sound barrier three times during the flight. The company described XB-1 as the first independently developed supersonic jet and the first civil supersonic jet made in America; those descriptions refer to an experimental demonstrator, not a commercial passenger aircraft. Boom’s flight announcement and its flight-test chronology provide the figures and program context.
How fast and how high did XB-1 fly?
Boom reported a maximum speed of Mach 1.122 and an altitude of 35,290 feet. It also gave the speed as 652 knots true airspeed, or 750 mph. These are company-reported test figures; a separate independent measurement is not established in the cited accounts.
Was the Boom XB-1 flight a passenger flight?
No. XB-1 is an experimental technology demonstrator, and the January 2025 flight was part of its flight-test program. Boom says the aircraft is intended to provide a technology foundation for its planned Overture airliner. XB-1’s first flight took place on March 22, 2024. A later test on February 10, 2025, reached Mach 1.18 at 36,514 feet; Boom said that flight concluded the XB-1 test program. That later result is separate from the January milestone. Boom’s flight-test chronology records both flights.

What authorization allowed XB-1 to fly supersonically?
The FAA issued Boom a special flight authorization on April 7, 2024. It allowed up to 20 paired flights by XB-1 and a chase aircraft in designated airspace, with the test window ending April 7, 2025. The authorization provided limited relief from specified noise-operation rules; it did not waive other certification requirements or certify XB-1 as an airliner. It was a bounded approval for a test program, not general permission for civil aircraft to fly supersonically over U.S. land. The FAA authorization sets out its scope and conditions.
Can supersonic planes fly over land in the U.S. now?
As of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s July 2, 2026 notice, civil aircraft were still generally prohibited from flying faster than Mach 1 over land without an operation-specific authorization. The department’s notice proposed replacing that general prohibition with an interim noise-based framework. A proposed rule is not a final rule, so the notice should not be read as a change already in effect. The Department of Transportation’s proposed rule describes the proposal and the then-current authorization requirement.

Did XB-1’s flight make a sonic boom on the ground?
Boom said ground teams confirmed that no audible sonic boom reached the ground during the January flight. The company’s observation concerns that particular test; it does not show that all supersonic flights, or flights under different atmospheric conditions, will be inaudible at ground level.
How Mach cutoff can reduce a boom’s ground impact
The FAA describes Mach cutoff as a technique in which a sonic boom bends and refracts back into the atmosphere, reducing its impact on the ground. Whether that happens depends on the aircraft, its speed and altitude, and atmospheric conditions. The FAA says Boom demonstrated its “Boomless Cruise” technique during an XB-1 test. That demonstration is not a guarantee that every supersonic flight will avoid an audible boom. The FAA’s explanation of the next era of supersonic flight discusses Mach cutoff and the agency’s approach to noise standards.
