U.S. E-Scooter and E-Bike Injuries Have Risen Sharply, CPSC Estimates

CPSC’s latest U.S. estimates show 79,300 e-scooter and 59,200 e-bike emergency-department-treated injuries in 2024—but they are not per-ride risk rates or a count of every injury.

Yes. The latest U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates show a substantial rise in emergency-department-treated injuries involving e-scooters and e-bikes. For 2024, CPSC estimated 79,300 e-scooter injuries and 59,200 e-bike injuries. Those are estimated ED visits—not a count of every injury, crashes, or the risk per ride or mile.

How many e-scooter and e-bike injuries were estimated in 2024?

CPSC’s report, published April 20, 2026, estimates injuries treated in U.S. emergency departments from 2017 through 2024. Its 2024 estimates were:

Device or measure CPSC estimate What it covers
E-scooters 79,300 in 2024 Estimated ED-treated injuries; 68,800 more than the 2017 estimate, a statistically significant overall increase (p < 0.01).
E-bikes 59,200 in 2024 Estimated ED-treated injuries. CPSC estimates 155,200 over 2017–2024; 2024 accounts for 38% of that total.
All micromobility products 698,500 over 2017–2024 Estimated ED-treated injuries across e-scooters, e-bikes, and self-balancing scooters—not just the two vehicle types in this article.
Reported e-scooter and e-bike fatalities 206 e-scooter and 310 e-bike fatalities over 2017–2024 Fatalities CPSC staff was aware of; reporting is ongoing and counts may change.

The report also estimates 380,000 e-scooter ED-treated injuries over the full 2017–2024 period. These figures come from CPSC’s 2017–2024 micromobility report.

What does “injuries are skyrocketing” mean in this report?

The increase is real in the specific measure CPSC reports: estimated visits to emergency departments for injuries associated with these products. CPSC uses the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS), a probability sample of hospitals, to estimate national product-related ED visits. The estimates are not a census of unique injured people, and they do not include injuries that never led to an ED visit. See CPSC’s NEISS explanation.

That distinction matters when interpreting the trend. The report does not provide the number of trips or miles ridden, or the number of devices in use. It therefore cannot establish whether an individual rider’s chance of injury has risen, or whether e-scooters are riskier than e-bikes per ride or mile.

Why newer figures may not match older reports

CPSC revised the NEISS hospital sample in 2024 and recalculated earlier estimates using adjusted weights. That improves consistency across the period in this report, but means historical figures may differ from numbers in older CPSC publications. The April 20, 2026 report is the consistent series for comparing 2017–2024.

Why the e-bike year-by-year trend needs care

CPSC says annual e-bike estimates for 2017–2021 did not meet its reporting criteria because their coefficients of variation were high. Its figure uses an annualized average for 2017–2021 rather than presenting each of those years as a reliable standalone estimate. The 2024 figure is an estimate, not proof that every year in between followed a smooth upward path.

What the 2024 follow-up studies found

CPSC conducted special follow-up studies of 173 e-scooter and 88 e-bike NEISS cases from 2024. These smaller studies describe reported circumstances among followed-up cases; they do not explain what caused the national increase.

Finding among 2024 follow-up cases E-scooters E-bikes
Rental devices 35% of e-scooter-related ED visits in the special-study findings 11%

Visibility issue reported as a possible contributor 20% 10%

Motor-vehicle accident association Not stated for e-scooters in the cited finding 24% of 2024 special-study injury cases

The motor-vehicle figure describes the investigated e-bike cases, not the cause of all e-bike injuries. Likewise, helmet and visibility responses in these follow-ups are not population-wide rates and do not by themselves establish whether a helmet or accessory prevented an injury.

What injuries and outcomes did CPSC describe?

Across the 2017–2024 micromobility estimates, fractures were the most common diagnosis, followed by contusions and abrasions. Frequently injured areas included the upper and lower limbs, head, and neck. CPSC reports that 86% of injured people were treated and released from the ED, while about 10% were admitted or transferred. Those disposition figures apply to micromobility injuries overall, including self-balancing scooters.

How to reduce risks when riding

CPSC’s guidance focuses on protective equipment, visibility, safe operation, and device condition. Its consumer safety page says, “Always wear a bicycle helmet when riding to protect your head.” That is agency safety guidance, not a helmet-effectiveness finding from the injury report.

Before and during a ride

  • Follow local traffic laws, use required riding areas, and obey speed limits and signals.
  • Wear a bicycle helmet. Use reflectors, headlamps, bells or horns, and other visibility accessories.
  • Before riding, inspect the handlebars, brakes, throttle, bell, lights, tires, cables, and frame. Follow the manufacturer’s directions and age and weight limits.
  • On an e-scooter, keep both hands on the handlebars, keep items off them, avoid riding under the influence, and do not carry an extra passenger.

Charge and maintain batteries carefully

  • Charge only while present; do not charge while sleeping or away from home.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s charging directions and use only the charger provided or recommended for the device.
  • Use a replacement battery pack only when it is tested and approved for the device and the manufacturer confirms it is suitable. Do not use modified packs or repurposed or used cells.

CPSC identifies ANSI/CAN/UL 2272 for personal e-mobility electrical systems and ANSI/CAN/UL 2849 for e-bike electrical systems in its manufacturer notice on micromobility electrical safety standards. The agency says compliance with the relevant standards significantly reduces risks from device fires; that statement concerns fire risk, not collision injuries, and does not mean a standard guarantees safety.
