Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallUsually, the transponder can be moved among vehicles on the account—but the exact rule depends on the agency that issued your E-ZPass. New Jersey and Virginia, for example, allow transfers between vehicles of the same class or type and require customers to keep vehicle and plate details accurate. Add each vehicle you may use and check your issuer’s rules before moving the tag.
Can you use one E-ZPass transponder in more than one vehicle?
In New Jersey and Virginia, you do not need a separate transponder for every car if the vehicles meet the issuing agency’s classification rules and are recorded on the account. New Jersey says each vehicle should be listed and allows a tag to be interchanged among vehicles in the same class (New Jersey E-ZPass FAQ). Virginia likewise says a transponder may be switched to another vehicle when it has the same vehicle classification or type (Virginia E-ZPass FAQ).
Those are examples, not a universal rule for every E-ZPass account. E-ZPass works across participating toll facilities, but the agency managing your account sets its enrollment and vehicle-record requirements. Check the issuer named on your account or transponder paperwork; if your issuer is not New Jersey or Virginia, follow that program’s terms.
Which vehicles and details should be on your account?
List every vehicle you may use
New Jersey directs customers to list each vehicle, and Virginia asks customers to provide information for all vehicles. Before relying on the transponder in another vehicle, add that vehicle to the account and confirm that it qualifies for the same transponder under your issuer’s rules.

Keep the plate and vehicle information accurate
Virginia asks for each vehicle’s registration state, type, make, model, year, color and plate number. New Jersey instructs customers to provide new vehicle and plate information as soon as possible and says temporary plates should be added (New Jersey E-ZPass FAQ). The vehicle record should match the vehicle and plate actually using the tag.
Why does vehicle class matter?
A permission to transfer a transponder is conditional, not a blanket approval to move it between any vehicles. New Jersey and Virginia describe transfers only among vehicles of the same class or type. Do not assume a passenger-car transponder can be used in a motorcycle, truck, RV or other vehicle with a different classification. The relevant class or type is determined by the issuer’s rules, so check with that agency when the vehicles differ.

- PORTABLE: Attaches to the interior windshield behind the rearview mirror with suction cups for easy transfer between 2-axle vehicles, including rental cars. If you transfer the Uni between vehicles, make sure you update your E-PASS account with the new vehicle’s license plate. For motorcycles, place the transponder in a saddlebag or storage compartment. Not for trailers or multi-axle vehicles.
- RENTAL CAR USE: A Uni toll pass can be used with rental cars of the same class — 2-axle vehicles. Make sure to add the rental vehicle's license plate to your E-PASS account. It may take up to 24 hours to link; during this time, tolls may be processed as an invoice. Make sure to remove the plate from your account after returning the vehicle to avoid charges from subsequent renters.
What if the transponder is not read?
New Jersey says a toll may be charged from a license-plate image when the transponder is not read. That plate-image toll may not qualify for E-ZPass discounts and may carry additional charges or a different toll rate (New Jersey E-ZPass FAQ). This is a New Jersey-specific warning; check your own issuer’s terms for its charges and discount treatment.

For a rental in New Jersey, the E-ZPass vehicle-upload instructions ask customers to enter effective start and end dates for the rental (New Jersey E-ZPass vehicle upload help). Add the rental’s plate and dates through the account workflow, and use the transponder only if the rental meets the applicable class rule. Other issuers may handle rentals differently.
