Lithuanian customs stopped two Tesla Cybertrucks at the Šalčininkai checkpoint on May 7, 2024, as they were being exported toward Belarus. Authorities suspected the trucks were meant to reach Russia in circumvention of EU restrictions and opened a pre-trial investigation. That suspicion was not a finding of guilt, and the available reporting does not establish the investigation’s final outcome.
What happened at the border?
The vehicles were stopped at Šalčininkai, on Lithuania’s border with Belarus. Contemporary reports said Lithuanian Customs declined to complete export procedures for the trucks, which were described as headed to Belarus. Officials suspected that Belarus was an intermediate route to Russia. The drivers were questioned and released, according to Electrek and TechSpot.
Lithuanian Customs said, as quoted in contemporary coverage: “A pre-trial investigation has been launched into smuggling and violation of international sanctions.” The reports do not identify a named official as the speaker. An investigation is not a court judgment, and the drivers’ release after questioning does not establish that the investigation ended.
Were the trucks actually bound for Russia?
That was the authorities’ suspicion, not an established destination. The reported export route was toward Belarus; officials suspected the vehicles would ultimately reach Russia, where EU restrictions applied. The available contemporary accounts do not prove where the trucks were intended to go or what happened to them after the customs action.

Why did customs intervene?
EU sanctions enforcement can involve scrutiny of a shipment’s route and purpose, not only its declared destination. A regional approach document signed by the customs authorities of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania on January 26, 2024, calls for risk-based controls. It says authorities should not authorize release when they have reasonable grounds to suspect that a shipment’s object and effect is to circumvent restrictions. It also identifies suspicious or economically unjustified routes as grounds to request additional documentation. This is general enforcement guidance; it does not establish the precise legal basis applied to these Cybertrucks or determine anyone’s guilt. Read the regional customs approach document.
What were the Cybertrucks worth?
Baltic News Network reported that the vehicles were manufactured in 2023 and valued at more than €200,000 each. That is a reported valuation, not a confirmed sale price or a figure supported in the cited coverage by a primary valuation record. Baltic News Network’s report gives the year and estimate.

How does the case fit into Lithuania’s broader customs enforcement?
Lithuanian Customs’ 2024 annual report records 28,854 refusals to release goods in 2024 when Russia or Belarus was the sender or recipient country. That is a broad category covering refusals of goods, not a count of vehicles, Cybertrucks, or criminal findings. Lithuanian Customs annual reports.
A separate 2024 report by Carscoops attributed to Lithuanian officials an estimate that roughly 50% of vehicles worth more than €50,000 exported through Kazakhstan, Belarus, and Uzbekistan in 2023 ended up in Russia. This is a secondary-reported estimate, not an independently verified official dataset in the available material, and it does not establish the destination of the two Cybertrucks. Carscoops’ report.

What is known about the case’s outcome?
The contemporary accounts establish the customs stop, the suspected Russia-bound route, and the launch of a pre-trial investigation. They do not establish a later court ruling, final investigative disposition, or whether the trucks were ultimately released, forfeited, or otherwise handled.
