Their specifications suggest a wider set of choices for riders who want an adventure-style motorcycle without moving to a larger-displacement machine.

Honda describes the CRF300L Rally as a street-legal dual sport with rally bodywork and long-travel suspension. Its 286 cc liquid-cooled single and 3.4-gallon tank are the key figures in the U.S. model information. Honda’s stated range of over 250 miles is specifically a result “in testing”; riders should not treat it as a guaranteed distance under their own conditions.
KTM’s emphasis: off-road hardware
KTM’s India-announced 399 cc 390 Adventure R has a 21-inch front wheel, an 18-inch rear, and 230 mm of fully adjustable suspension travel. Those specifications, alongside KTM’s emphasis on ride modes and electronics, make the R’s off-road equipment a more explicit part of its pitch. They do not, by themselves, prove how it performs against the Honda on any particular trail.

What does KTM’s 350 cc India variant mean?
In April 2026, KTM and Bajaj Auto announced a 350 cc version of the 390 Adventure for India, priced at ₹2,80,905 ex-showroom Delhi. The announcement said the existing 399 cc Adventure variants would continue. This is a market-specific addition; it should not be read as evidence that the 350 cc model is available worldwide or that it replaces the 399 cc R.
The two Indian prices refer to different engine variants and announcements: ₹3,77,915 ex-showroom Delhi for the 399 cc 390 Adventure R announced in January, and ₹2,80,905 ex-showroom Delhi for the 350 cc variant announced in April. They are not U.S. prices, and ex-showroom figures do not establish a buyer’s final on-road cost.

Do Himalayan sales prove that the segment is booming?
No. Royal Enfield Media reported that annual global sales for the Himalayan platform exceeded 38,000 units in 2026, compared with more than 9,600 units sold in 2023. These are company-reported figures for that platform. They do not provide an independent segment total, regional sales mix, or comparable year-over-year growth rate for small-bore ADV motorcycles as a whole.
The figures do show why the Himalayan is part of the conversation: a platform can attract substantial global demand while the market’s wider size and growth remain uncertain. They cannot establish that riders broadly are switching from larger motorcycles to mid-weight models, or explain why individual buyers choose one.

What should riders compare before choosing one?
Start with the riding you actually plan to do, then compare the exact model and market version available where you live. Adventure styling alone does not make two bikes equivalent.
- Terrain and road mix: Consider how often you will ride pavement, gravel, or more demanding trails. The Honda is described as a street-legal dual sport; KTM highlights the R’s off-road wheel sizes and suspension.
- Fit and wind protection: Check seat height, reach to the ground, standing ergonomics, and wind coverage on the exact local model. The cited announcements do not provide a consistent comparison of these factors.
- Suspension and wheels: Compare travel, adjustability, and wheel sizes rather than relying on the ADV label. KTM’s cited India R specifications include 21-/18-inch wheels and 230 mm fully adjustable suspension; the cited Honda material does not give matching figures.
- Range: Treat manufacturer range claims as estimates tied to their stated conditions. Honda’s over-250-mile figure is explicitly “in testing”; the cited KTM announcement gives no range figure.
- Variant, price, and availability: Confirm model year, engine variant, local specification, taxes, delivery or destination charges, and dealer availability. The Honda price above is for the U.S.; the KTM prices are ex-showroom Delhi figures for India.
For mixed road and off-road riding, also budget for suitable protective gear and check that any accessories fit the specific model year and variant. The cited announcements do not establish particular gear ratings or accessory compatibility.

Why are riders considering mid-weight ADV bikes such as the KTM 390 Adventure or Himalayan 450?
The examples here illustrate an expanding range of smaller-capacity adventure choices, but they do not establish a general shift in rider behavior or its causes. A rider comparing these models should weigh intended terrain, ergonomics, local availability, and the exact variant rather than assume that displacement or adventure styling alone predicts suitability.
