A Smart car does not have one universal weight: it varies by model, year, body style, transmission and market. For a specific example, the 2020 smart EQ fortwo coupé edition one has an EU unladen weight of 1,095 kg (about 2,414 lb), according to ADAC’s model data. U.S.-market 2017 fortwo coupe specifications list curb weights from 2,050 to 2,127 lb, depending on transmission.
Which Smart car are you asking about?
“Smart car” can refer to more than one model. The fortwo is the small two-seat microcar most people mean, while the newer smart #1 is a five-seat model with substantially different dimensions and weight. Figures for one should not be treated as specifications for the other.
Even within the fortwo range, weight depends on the model year, coupe or cabrio body, transmission and sales market. The examples below retain the terminology used by each source: ADAC’s EU “unladen weight” and Mercedes-Benz’s U.S. “curb weight.” They are useful model-specific figures, not a perfectly like-for-like comparison.
How much does a Smart Fortwo weigh?
2020 smart EQ fortwo coupé edition one
For the 01/2020–11/2020 model record, ADAC lists an EU unladen weight of 1,095 kg. It also gives a permissible gross vehicle weight of 1,310 kg and a payload of 215 kg. These figures describe different limits: unladen weight is the vehicle under the source’s stated convention, payload is the additional load allowance, and gross vehicle weight is the maximum loaded figure. 2017 U.S. smart fortwo coupe
Mercedes-Benz Media USA lists curb weights of 2,050 lb with a manual transmission and 2,127 lb with an automatic transmission for the 2017 fortwo coupe. The manufacturer’s figures are in its 2017 U.S. coupe specifications.
2017 U.S. smart fortwo cabrio
The 2017 U.S. cabrio is listed at 2,094 lb, or 2,150 lb with the twinamic automatic transmission, in Mercedes-Benz Media USA’s cabrio specifications, dated September 21, 2016.

How does the smart #1 compare?
The smart #1 is not the fortwo microcar: it is a five-seat model. Smart UK lists kerb weights ranging from 1,780 kg for Pure and Pro trims to 1,900 kg for BRABUS. These are UK-market, trim-specific specifications; they should not be read as fortwo weights. The figures are on Smart UK’s smart #1 specifications page.

- Curb or kerb weight: the weight label used by the source for its vehicle specification. The U.S. manufacturer examples here use “curb,” while Smart UK uses “kerb.”
- Unladen weight: the term ADAC uses for the 2020 fortwo figure. Keep the source’s label rather than assuming it is identical in every detail to another market’s curb-weight convention.
- Payload: the additional load allowance, not the vehicle’s own weight. For the cited 2020 variant, ADAC lists 215 kg.
- Permissible gross vehicle weight: the maximum loaded vehicle figure in the cited specification. ADAC lists 1,310 kg for that 2020 variant.
For a particular Smart, check the year, body style, powertrain or transmission, and market before comparing a weight figure. Do not add the payload to a listed curb or unladen weight unless the applicable specification defines the figures that way.
