Yes. Turo confirmed that the Ford F-150 Lightning involved in the January 1, 2025, New Orleans attack and the Tesla Cybertruck that exploded outside a Las Vegas hotel that day had both been rented through its peer-to-peer marketplace. That shared rental platform does not establish that the two incidents were connected.
What Turo confirmed
In a company statement titled “An update on today’s incidents in New Orleans and Las Vegas,” Turo said both vehicles had been rented on its platform. Turo’s statement, posted the day after the events, read: “It is with a heavy heart that we confirm that yesterday morning’s horrific attack in New Orleans and yesterday’s Tesla Cybertruck explosion in Las Vegas both involved vehicles rented on Turo.” Read Turo’s statement.
Contemporaneous reporting identified the New Orleans vehicle as a Ford electric pickup, specifically an F-150 Lightning, and the Las Vegas vehicle as a Tesla Cybertruck. CBS News reported the vehicle details.
Were the incidents connected?
The fact that both vehicles were rented through Turo is a confirmed point in common, not evidence that the events were coordinated or otherwise linked. An Associated Press report published January 2, 2025, said authorities had not found a definitive connection between the incidents at that time. The cited contemporaneous reporting does not establish later investigative findings, so it should not be treated as a final account of the investigation. Read the AP report.

How Turo rentals work
Turo is a peer-to-peer car rental marketplace. Vehicle owners, called hosts, list cars that renters can book through the platform. That differs from a conventional rental arrangement in which a rental company supplies its own fleet, although specific pickup arrangements, fees and protection terms depend on the listing and booking. Turo’s New Orleans electric-vehicle page illustrates that its marketplace can include EV listings; listings and prices can change over time.

In AP’s 2025 report, Turo said that over its 12 years of operation through September 30, 2024, customers had taken 27 million trips and driven 8.6 billion miles. Turo also said fewer than 0.1% of its trips ended in a “serious incident,” which it described with vehicle theft as an example. These are company-reported figures and use Turo’s own definition; they are not an independent estimate of rental risk and do not explain or link the two January 1 events.
