A Perth truck salesman reportedly earned more than $123,000 from Turo since joining the car-sharing platform in 2023—but that figure is cumulative platform earnings, not verified profit or take-home income. His story shows both the appeal of hiring out desirable cars and the work, financing and insurance questions prospective Australian hosts need to weigh.
What the Perth Turo host reportedly earned
In a profile published on 28 November 2025, PerthNow reported that Matt Tarr, a 28-year-old truck salesman, had earned more than $123,000 since starting on Turo in 2023 and averaged around $5,000 a month. Those are reported platform earnings. The profile also says Tarr had loans on his cars and put most of the money back into the business to pay down loans, upgrade vehicles or add another car. It does not establish his net profit, take-home income or salary.
Turo’s Australian host page displays promotional figures of $12,144 in average annual earnings per car, $67 per booked day and 15 booked days per month. These are company figures, not audited net-profit estimates or a guarantee; the page does not establish a methodology that makes them directly comparable with Tarr’s reported earnings. Treat them as an indication of Turo’s marketing, not a forecast for a Perth vehicle. Turo’s Australian host page
What cars were in Tarr’s fleet?
The PerthNow profile named four vehicles: a 2018 Ford Mustang GT convertible, a 2019 Mercedes C43 AMG, a 2025 Tesla Model 3 and a 2023 Kia Seltos. Tarr said the Mustang was often booked for weddings and special events. He had previously operated a larger fleet, then focused on fewer luxury vehicles to keep the work manageable alongside his full-time job.

The account is one host’s experience, not evidence that those models—or luxury cars generally—will attract the same demand or earnings for another owner. Local bookings, vehicle costs and how often a car is available all affect whether sharing makes sense.
What the side hustle involved beyond bookings
Tarr told PerthNow that he washed each car after it was returned. The profile also recounts his account of a guest who allegedly let an unauthorised young driver use a car and attempted burnouts; it says Turo banned that guest. This is an incident described in one profile, not a measure of how frequently such events occur.

His reported approach involved more than collecting booking income: he managed guest issues and vehicle turnarounds, while using much of the earnings to service loans and reinvest in the fleet. He also described a personal benefit—access to cars he had wanted to own. Eventually, he scaled back to a smaller operation he could handle while keeping his job.
Check Australian host, insurance and finance requirements first
Turo’s Australian guidance says hosts need compulsory third-party (CTP) cover, must maintain personal insurance and should contact their insurer before listing. It also advises checking lease or finance documents and applicable state requirements. Requirements and vehicle eligibility can vary, so confirm the current rules for your location and car before making a listing decision.

Turo explains that its earnings plans allocate financial responsibility for eligible damage during a booking, but they are separate from a host’s personal insurance. The company states: “Earnings plans are not insurance but an agreement between you and Turo about how to allocate financial responsibility.” Read the current plan terms and understand how the selected plan affects your share and damage responsibility; do not assume it replaces personal cover. Work out whether the numbers could suit your car
Neither Tarr’s result nor Turo’s advertised average establishes what a new Perth host is likely to keep. Before listing, build your own estimate around the costs and constraints that apply to your vehicle and circumstances.
- Bookings: Estimate realistic local demand and the days your car can actually be available; advertised booked-day figures are not a promise of utilization.
- Vehicle finance: Check your lender, lease or finance terms before sharing the car.
- Insurance and damage responsibility: Confirm personal-insurance compatibility and compare the current Turo earnings-plan terms, including the share and eligible-damage arrangements.
- Running work and costs: Account for cleaning after returns, maintenance, downtime and the time needed to manage bookings and guests.
- Tax: Separate income from net earnings and keep records of income and eligible expenses.
Australian tax treatment matters
The Australian Taxation Office says income from peer-to-peer car sharing has tax consequences, and only eligible expenses directly related to earning that income may be claimed. Costs attributable to private use cannot simply be claimed as though the car were used wholly to earn sharing income. Check the ATO’s current peer-to-peer car-sharing guidance and get advice from a qualified tax professional if you need help applying the rules to your circumstances.
