There is no universal winner between a turbocharger and a supercharger for a Mazda Miata. The right choice depends on your chassis generation and engine, target power, use (street, track or competition), emissions jurisdiction, transmission and the complete installed budget. In Flyin’ Miata’s vendor comparison of a 2016 turbo car and a 2017 Roots-type supercharged car, output was close below about 2,800 rpm; above that point, the turbo configuration made more horsepower and torque. That result applies to those specific cars and tunes, not every Miata kit.
Turbocharger or supercharger: what changes in a Miata?
Both systems force more air into the engine so it can burn more fuel and produce more torque. A turbocharger uses exhaust gas to spin a turbine connected to a compressor. A supercharger is driven mechanically from the engine, normally by a belt. The hardware, calibration and supporting systems determine the result more than the label on the kit.

A turbo can use otherwise-wasted exhaust energy and generally has greater scope for upper-rpm airflow. A belt-driven supercharger responds directly to engine speed and can feel very immediate, but it also takes some power to drive. Those are engineering tendencies, not guarantees. Compressor size, pulley or wastegate settings, intercooling, cam timing, fuel delivery, exhaust design and the tune can change the behavior substantially.

Why generation and engine come first
MX-5 engines, electronics, transmissions and emissions equipment differ substantially by generation. A kit designed for one car should not be assumed to fit another without an explicit application listing.

NA and early NB applications
Flyin’ Miata lists a Stage 1 turbo for 1996–1997 cars and estimates approximately 175 horsepower at the rear wheels, compared with a stated 100-hp stock baseline for that application. That is a vendor estimate for that kit and engine, not a universal Miata output figure. The same source claims CARB Executive Order D-601-3; confirm the order, model-year coverage and exact parts before relying on it for a California registration or inspection decision.
A separate Flyin’ Miata Stage 1 listing is identified for 1990–1993 cars and says it assumes the original engine. Confirm the supplied components, injector and ECU requirements and current specifications for the actual vehicle. For automatic NA/NB cars, Flyin’ Miata warns that vacuum accumulation may be needed and that drivability problems are likely with the cited product. Treat that warning as specific to the referenced kit and transmission.
NC (2005–2015)
BBR lists a supercharger conversion for 2005–2015 NC models. Its page gives a fully fitted drive-in/drive-out price of £4,995, but the page date and current availability are unclear. The price is not a current market average and cannot be used as a direct comparison with a turbo system without matching the scope of work.
ND (2016 and newer)
Flyin’ Miata describes an ND BBR Stage 1 turbo as a bespoke twin-scroll unit running approximately 7–8 psi, with full boost around 3,000 rpm. The vendor characterizes the delivery as especially linear for a stock ND engine. Those figures and the description belong to that specific ND configuration.
BBR’s cited Stage Two supercharger page lists £6,945 fully fitted and describes a particular 2.0-litre ND application. The page title/model-year framing and the body text require confirmation with BBR before treating the fitment as definitive. An Edelbrock catalog also lists Stage 1 supercharger kit number 1554 for the 2016–2018 2.0-litre MX-5 with a tune; current stock, price and complete application details were not established.

What the available power comparison actually shows
The clearest direct comparison is a Flyin’ Miata help article from 2023. It compares a Stage 1 turbo on a 2016 Miata with a Roots-type supercharger on a 2017 Miata. Both cars are described as having optimized tunes. The vendor reports similar horsepower and torque below roughly 2,800 rpm, followed by a turbo advantage in both measurements.

Do not merge these numbers into one generic “Miata turbo” or “Miata supercharger” output. The measurements use different generations, engines and locations. Rear-wheel horsepower is not interchangeable with the crank horsepower quoted by a manufacturer.

Drivability: response, lag and everyday behavior
Low-rpm response
A supercharger’s belt drive links compressor speed directly to engine speed, which can make throttle response feel predictable in normal driving. A turbocharger’s response depends on exhaust energy, turbine sizing, wastegate control and the tune. A well-matched modern turbo can be responsive, while an oversized turbo can feel soft before boost arrives. The Flyin’ Miata comparison found little difference below approximately 2,800 rpm in its two optimized ND configurations, so the common assumption that every supercharger is always quicker at low rpm is not supported by that evidence.
Midrange and upper-rpm pull
In the same comparison, the turbo setup began producing more horsepower and torque after about 2,800 rpm. That makes a turbo attractive when your priority is passing acceleration, track straights or power near the engine’s upper operating range. It does not prove that every turbo will outperform every supercharger; older engines and different compressor, pulley and exhaust choices can change the curve.
Cruise and part-throttle behavior
The BBR ND turbo installation guide notes that some users experienced mild cruise-control power oscillation while climbing moderate-to-steep grades. The guide does not establish how often it occurs or whether it applies to other tunes and revisions. If cruise-control smoothness matters, ask the installer whether the calibration addresses this behavior and how the kit can be returned to its prior map.

Heat, noise and packaging
Both systems add heat and complexity. A turbo places hot exhaust-side hardware in the engine bay and generally needs an intercooler, charge piping and careful thermal shielding. A supercharger occupies belt-drive and intake space and may use an intercooler or other charge-cooling arrangement. The correct question is not which technology is automatically cooler; it is what cooling hardware, airflow and calibration the specific kit requires on your car.

Two BBR pages provide useful reference points, but they do not create a current generation-by-generation price table. The NC page lists £4,995 for a fully fitted conversion; the ND Stage Two page lists £6,945 fully fitted. The NC figure was associated with a page crawled approximately in 2023, while the ND page was crawled approximately in September 2026. Confirm current pricing, VAT or other tax, shipping, installation scope and availability directly with the supplier.

When requesting quotes, make every supplier price the same scope. Ask for an itemized total covering:
- Forced-induction hardware, brackets, belts, exhaust and intake parts.
- ECU calibration, licensing, dyno time and any supplied maps.
- Injectors, fuel pump, fuel-pressure control and required sensors.
- Intercooler or charge-cooling system, radiator or oil-cooling upgrades and heat shielding.
- Clutch, flywheel or automatic-transmission constraints.
- Installation labor, fluids, shipping, taxes and post-install inspection.
- Emissions equipment, documentation and any jurisdiction-specific testing.
- Warranty terms, replacement parts and software support.
A low kit price can become expensive if it excludes tuning, fuel-system work or cooling. Conversely, a higher fitted quote may include those items. Compare the final installed configuration and target output, not the hardware-only headline.
Supporting systems and limits to check before ordering
Engine condition
Compression, leak-down results, oil pressure, cooling-system condition and service history matter more after cylinder pressure and heat increase. Resolve misfires, oil consumption, cooling faults and timing issues before adding boost. A forced-induction kit is not a repair for a tired engine.

Fuel and engine management
Confirm injector capacity, pump flow, fuel-pressure control, intake-air and wideband sensing, ECU access and the exact calibration process. The tune must match the fuel available in your region and the boost level actually delivered. Do not assume that a map for one model year or compression ratio is safe on another.
Cooling and exhaust
Check intercooler or charge-cooler airflow, radiator capacity, oil temperature control, exhaust heat management and under-hood clearance. Track use, hot climates and repeated high-load operation can expose limits that never appear during a short street drive.
Clutch, gearbox and differential
Additional torque can reveal a worn clutch or weak mounts. Verify the torque capacity of the existing clutch and transmission, differential condition, axle health and engine-management behavior during shifts. An automatic car needs special scrutiny: the cited early Flyin’ Miata warning indicates that drivability complications can occur, and the exact kit/transmission combination must be checked.

Legality is not a generic property of “turbo” or “supercharger.” It depends on the vehicle identification, model year, engine family, kit part number, calibration, retained emissions equipment and jurisdiction. One Flyin’ Miata 1996–1997 system is advertised with CARB EO D-601-3, but verify the current California Air Resources Board record and the exact configuration before claiming it is legal for your car. Approval in one US state does not establish legality elsewhere, and a road-legal kit may still require inspection paperwork.

- Identify the exact car. Record generation, model year, engine, transmission, market, emissions equipment and any engine swaps.
- Set the use case. Decide whether immediate street response, upper-rpm power, autocross launches, track consistency, quiet cruising or emissions compliance matters most.
- Choose a realistic power target. State whether your number is wheel or crank horsepower and where it must be achieved in the rev range.
- Shortlist only documented applications. Require a manufacturer fitment statement for your exact chassis and engine; do not infer compatibility from another generation.
- Request matched quotes. Give every installer the same target, fuel, cooling expectations and labor scope, then compare itemized totals.
- Verify legality and support. Check current approval documents, warranty, replacement parts, tuning support and local inspection requirements.
- Inspect the car first. Perform compression or leak-down testing, check cooling and fuel systems, and repair existing faults.
- Plan post-install validation. Budget for calibration verification, datalogging, fluid checks and a gradual heat-cycle and load-testing process.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Comparing a crank-hp claim with a wheel-hp result
Always label the measurement location. The approximately 175-hp early Flyin’ Miata figure is rear-wheel horsepower, while Mazda’s 181-hp 2026 specification is factory-rated engine horsepower. They are not directly comparable.

Assuming a product name covers every Miata
NA, NB, NC and ND applications use different hardware and controls. A 1990–1993 listing, a 1996–1997 listing, an NC conversion and an ND system should be treated as separate products until the supplier confirms otherwise.
Using an old web price as a present quote
The £4,995 and £6,945 figures are historical vendor-page references with uncertain scope and availability. Get a dated written quote that states tax, labor, shipping and included supporting parts.
Ignoring the transmission
Manual and automatic cars can require different calibration and hardware. The early automatic-car warning demonstrates why transmission-specific confirmation is necessary.

Expecting a universal reliability verdict
The available material does not establish independent, controlled reliability data comparing turbo and supercharger systems across Miata generations. Reliability will depend on kit design, tune, thermal control, maintenance, installation quality and use.
Bottom line
Choose a turbocharger when a documented kit for your generation delivers the upper-rpm power and torque curve you want, and you can support it with the required fuel, cooling, exhaust and calibration work. Choose a supercharger when its exact application, response characteristics and legal status better match your street or track priorities. For either route, compare complete installed configurations on the same chassis, with the same measurement standard and a verified emissions position. The evidence available today supports a turbo advantage in the cited post-2,800-rpm ND comparison, not a universal rule that makes every Miata turbo superior.
