A turbocharger uses exhaust energy to spin a turbine connected to an intake-air compressor. Compressing air lets an engine take in more air mass for a given cylinder volume, which can support more fuel and potentially more power. The result depends on the engine and the complete turbo system—not just the boost gauge or turbocharger.
How does a turbocharger work?
Exhaust leaving the engine flows through the turbine housing and turns the turbine wheel. A shaft links that wheel to the compressor on the intake side. As the turbine spins, the compressor draws in and compresses air before it reaches the engine.
Compression raises intake-air density. With more air mass entering the cylinders, the engine can burn more fuel while maintaining a suitable air-fuel ratio. That can increase power for a given engine displacement, but the turbocharger does not determine output by itself: the engine, fuel delivery, exhaust, cooling, controls, and installation all matter.
The turbine extracts energy from exhaust flow and also creates exhaust backpressure. A turbo is therefore not a free power source; it changes how the engine breathes and operates thermally.

What are the main turbocharger parts?
- Compressor: Draws in and compresses intake air.
- Turbine and turbine housing: Guide exhaust flow and convert part of its energy into shaft power.
- Shaft, bearings, and center housing: Support the rotating assembly. Garrett Motion’s basic turbocharger guide depicts oil inlet and outlet connections for the assembly.
- Charge-air cooler (intercooler): Cools compressed air in many turbo systems before it enters the engine.
- Wastegate or variable-geometry mechanism: Controls turbine-side operation through different system architectures. Neither arrangement is universally best; the right design depends on the application.
- Blow-off valve: Garrett Motion describes this as a pressure-relief device on the intake tract that prevents the compressor from going into surge.
What does an intercooler do?
Compressing air heats it. A charge-air cooler removes some of that heat, increasing the air’s density. Garrett Motion also says cooling increases resistance to detonation. The exact layout varies: turbocharged engines do not all use the same cooler arrangement, and an intercooler alone does not guarantee a particular power or reliability outcome.
What are turbo lag, surge, and choke?
Turbo lag
Turbo lag is the delay between a change in engine demand and the turbocharger building the airflow and pressure the engine needs. It reflects the response of the engine and turbo system together; it is not captured by a single boost number.

Surge
Surge is unstable compressor operation when airflow and pressure conditions fall outside the compressor’s usable range. On a compressor map, operation to the left of the surge boundary is unstable. A blow-off valve is one pressure-relief measure described by Garrett Motion, but valve choice and system design must suit the application.
Choke and turbo speed
Near or beyond the compressor’s choke boundary, efficiency falls and turbo speed can become excessive. BorgWarner advises operating within the turbo’s speed limits, typically at or below the map’s top speed line.

How do you read a compressor map?
A compressor map plots corrected air mass flow against compressor pressure ratio. It also shows efficiency regions, surge and choke boundaries, and turbo speed lines. Use it to see whether the compressor can serve the engine’s expected operating points without crossing important limits.
Pressure ratio is the compressor’s absolute outlet pressure divided by its absolute inlet pressure. It is not the same as boost gauge pressure: a boost reading alone does not account for inlet pressure. A map is a selection aid, not a complete system design. It does not settle turbine matching, exhaust manifold, fuel system, controls, installation, or vehicle fitment.

How do you choose a turbocharger for an engine?
- Define the application and target operating points. Establish the target power and the engine’s displacement and maximum speed. Account for expected ambient temperature and barometric pressure.
- Estimate airflow and required pressure ratio. BorgWarner offers a rough gasoline-engine rule of thumb: about 1 lb/min of airflow supports roughly 10 horsepower. This is an initial heuristic, not a measured guarantee; engine type and rpm range affect how it should be interpreted.
- Compare candidate compressor maps. Check expected corrected mass flow and pressure ratio, then examine efficiency, surge and choke boundaries, and turbo speed margin at the engine’s operating points.
- Match the rest of the system. Consider turbine response, wastegate or variable-geometry architecture, charge-air cooling, exhaust and intake layout, fuel delivery, controls, packaging, and engine and vehicle compatibility.
A horsepower label or generic boost target cannot establish that a turbo is right for a particular vehicle. Confirm fitment and system requirements for the exact engine and application. BorgWarner’s compressor-map sizing guide explains the map concepts and gives its airflow heuristic.
