It does document one clear U.S.-market 2025 example—the Honda Civic Type R—and useful technology from Mercedes-AMG’s M139 family, although the cited Mercedes announcements do not verify 2025 model-year specifications. Toyota’s 2025 GR Corolla is a notable near-miss: its turbocharged engine has three cylinders, not four.
What qualifies—and what the evidence supports
A strict 2025 list needs distinct four-cylinder engines with specifications tied to that model year and market. The manufacturer sources available here establish only one such entry. Mercedes-AMG’s M139 and M139l material is valuable for understanding turbocharger and fuel-system technology, but it comes from an engine introduction and vehicle announcements rather than 2025 model-year specification sheets. The M139l applications are related uses of an engine family, not separate designs to count toward a five-engine ranking.
All figures below are manufacturer-published ratings or descriptions, not results from independent comparative testing. Peak output alone also cannot establish an engine’s responsiveness, durability, efficiency, or overall vehicle performance.
The documented 2025 U.S. entry: Honda Civic Type R
Specifications
Honda’s October 30, 2024 U.S. specifications identify the 2025 Civic Type R’s engine as a 1,996 cc turbocharged inline-four. It is rated at 315 SAE net hp at 6,500 rpm and 310 lb-ft of torque from 2,600 to 4,000 rpm. Honda lists 25.2 psi of boost, a 7,000-rpm redline, and a 9.8:1 compression ratio. Honda’s specification sheet also lists DOHC VTEC, direct injection, and a water-cooled oil cooler.

- TURBOCHARGED FOUR-CYLINDER DESIGN: The DM111 represents the layout of a turbocharged four-cylinder automotive engine. The turbocharger assembly and exposed engine structure show how forced-induction hardware is arranged with the main engine components.
- METAL CONSTRUCTION AND FINISHING: Made from aluminum alloy and stainless steel components, the model uses precision casting and CNC machining in its manufacturing process. Anodized surfaces provide a consistent finish for assembly and display.
- MOTORIZED MECHANICAL OPERATION: After assembly, the motor drives the engine mechanism to demonstrate coordinated mechanical movement. The exposed structure allows the transmission process and relationships between moving components to be observed during operation.
- 360+ PART ASSEMBLY PROJECT: Build the engine step by step from more than 360 components. The manufacturer estimates approximately four hours of assembly time. The multi-step construction is intended for model builders who are comfortable working with small mechanical components.
- DIMENSIONS AND DISPLAY USE: The completed DM111 measures approximately 7.68 × 5.12 × 7.32 inches and weighs about 5.80 pounds. It can be displayed in a home, office, studio, workshop, classroom, or automotive-themed collection.
What is technically distinctive
Honda’s feature description combines variable cam timing on both camshafts with VTEC on the exhaust cam, alongside turbocharging, intercooling, and direct injection. Honda also describes a small-diameter turbine wheel as a measure intended to reduce turbo lag. Those are design features and manufacturer-described aims; they should not be mistaken for independently measured response data.
The engine is paired with a six-speed manual transmission with rev-match control and a helical limited-slip differential. Honda specifies 22/28/24 mpg city/highway/combined and regular unleaded fuel, with premium recommended. These are U.S.-market specifications for the Civic Type R, not figures to generalize to other markets or trims.

Mercedes-AMG M139: notable technology, but not a verified 2025 entry
M139 engine family
Mercedes-AMG’s engine introduction describes a 1,991 cc M139 four-cylinder with variants rated up to 310 kW (421 metric hp) and 500 Nm. Listed features include a twin-scroll turbocharger, roller-bearing compressor and turbine wheels, maximum boost of 2.1 bar, combined direct and port injection, and hand assembly. These are figures from the engine introduction, not confirmed 2025 model-year ratings. The source’s historical “world’s most powerful” framing should not be treated as a current ranking. Mercedes-AMG’s M139 announcement
M139l with electrically assisted turbocharging
The longitudinal M139l illustrates a different approach. In its C 43 announcement, Mercedes-Benz USA describes an electric motor integrated on the turbocharger shaft that helps accelerate the compressor before exhaust flow takes over. The company calls this the first series-production engine with an electrically assisted exhaust-gas turbocharger and reports 402 hp and 369 lb-ft for that C 43 application. The announcement does not establish those as 2025 model-year specifications. Mercedes-Benz USA’s C 43 announcement

For the C 63 S E Performance, Mercedes-Benz USA reports 469 hp and 402 lb-ft from the M139l combustion engine and says the electric turbo can reach up to 175,000 rpm. Those are combustion-engine figures, not the output of the complete hybrid system, and the announcement does not verify them as 2025 specifications. Why the 2025 Toyota GR Corolla does not qualify
The GR Corolla is relevant to a performance-engine comparison, but it fails the cylinder-count requirement. Toyota identifies the 2025 car’s G16E-GTS as a turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder, rated at 300 hp at 6,500 rpm and 295 lb-ft. It is therefore not a four-cylinder candidate, regardless of its output. Toyota’s 2025 GR Corolla announcement

Why a “top five” ranking would be misleading
The documented examples cannot be turned into five distinct, verified 2025 engines without changing the criteria or counting related applications as separate designs. Nor do the sources provide a common test, scoring method, or independent performance measurements that could support an objective ranking. A sound comparison would need consistent evidence for each candidate: model year and market, cylinder count and displacement, rated output and torque rpm range, turbo layout and boost, fueling system, hybrid contribution versus combustion-only output, and whether the numbers are manufacturer ratings or test results.
