ATV Trailers for Hauling Wood: A Specification-Based Buying Guide

A specification-based comparison of ATV trailers for hauling wood, with the payload, towing and hitch limits to verify before you buy.

The best ATV trailer for hauling wood is the one whose payload rating, bed size and hitch limits all fit your specific ATV. Trailer capacity figures alone do not settle that. This guide compares four current trailer models on their published specifications, explains how to check them against your machine, and shows where the listed numbers stop being useful.

How this shortlist was built

Every figure below comes from a manufacturer product page, a retailer listing or the manufacturer’s own ATV guidance. None of these models was tested side by side by an independent lab or reviewer, and none of the pages gives a hands-on loading trial. Treat the numbers as what the seller claims, not as measured performance. Publication years are not stated on these pages, so confirm current availability, pricing and warranty terms before you buy.

Four models make the shortlist. A fifth would need a current listing to be recommended. The one Ohio Steel firewood cart we found is marked no longer available, so it appears below only as a reference point, not as a pick.

Start with the ATV, not the trailer

Trailer specifications describe what the trailer can carry. Your ATV’s owner’s manual describes what the vehicle is allowed to pull and carry. Those are separate limits, and the smaller one governs.

#1 Best Overall
VEVOR ATV UTV Trailer Tow Behind Dump Cart
  • LARGE LOAD CAPACITY: 1500lb; 15 cu.ft of hauling capacity
  • Convenient Universal Connection: Embrace the effortless compatibility of our tow behind dump cart. No need for special tools - just connect the cart to your existing tractors, lawnmowers, ATV, UTV, and more. Turn your yard hauling work into a breeze.
  • Efficient Hauling Assistant: Unlike most dump trailers, this metal trailer can carry up to 1500 pounds of items. The thickness of the pipe wall is increased to 0.07", the trailer rod is thickened to 2" x 2", and the side rod is reinforced to 1" x 1". This improves the overall load-bearing capacity while effectively preventing deformation and pipe breakage.
  • High Capacity Trailer: Our ATV dump cart has added railings on four sides and can hold 15 cubic feet of yard waste. Collect more wood, soil, or garbage at once, reducing the need for frequent trips. Handle your yard work in one fell swoop with our high-capacity trailer.
  • Flexible Dumping: Say goodbye to the strain of manual handling. Our garden ATV trailer boasts a user-friendly dump feature, allowing you to clear debris swiftly with a simple hand-pull or foot-step and a quick opening of the rear gate. Make your yard work less work and more comfortable.
  • Total vehicle capacity. Polaris states that vehicle capacity includes riders, accessories and cargo. Every bag of split wood, and every passenger, counts against the same rating.
  • Towing rating. This is the maximum loaded trailer weight the ATV may pull. The trailer’s empty weight counts toward it, and so does the wood.
  • Vertical hitch or tongue limit. Polaris lists this as a separate rating. Check it against the tongue weight your loaded trailer will actually put on the hitch.
  • Braking. Ohio Steel’s manual tells owners hauling heavy loads to verify adequate towing and braking capacity. A loaded trailer on a downhill trail is a braking question as much as a payload question.

Do not assume one ATV’s published limits apply to another model, even within the same brand. Confirm the exact numbers in the manual for your machine and model year.

What the trailer ratings actually mean

Payload is a weight limit, not a volume limit

Cubic feet describe space in the bed. They say nothing about how heavy the load can be. Green or wet hardwood is far heavier per cubic foot than dry, split softwood, so a bed can be full long before the payload is reached. Work backward from the payload rating: estimate how much your typical load weighs, then confirm the trailer’s rating and your ATV’s towing limit both have room for it. Never treat a large bed as permission to exceed the rated payload.

Ground clearance and wheels decide where you can go

A trailer that works on a gravel road can bottom out on a rutted woods trail. Clearance, tire size and axle design determine how much rough ground the trailer can cover. Manufacturer marketing about wooded terrain is useful as a stated intention, but it is not independent evidence of performance.

  • Large Capacity Trailer: The utility trailer holds 22 cubic feet of yard waste, allowing you to collect more wood, dirt, and debris at once without frequent dumping, making yard work faster and easier.
  • Hand or Foot Control: Choose between hand-pull or foot-pedal dumping. Hand-pull is for precise tasks, while foot-pedal is ideal for quick, bulk unloading, reducing strain and improving efficiency.

Bed material and unloading affect daily use

A polyethylene bed resists rust and is easy to hose out, according to manufacturer claims. Steel frames and flatbeds trade enclosure for easier loading of long or bulky pieces, and they make it easier to add side panels. Tilt or dump mechanisms speed up unloading, but only dump when the trailer is parked on level, stable ground. Polaris specifically advises against dumping or unloading on an incline.

The four models compared

Model Stated load rating Stated volume Bed and frame Dump function Wheels and clearance Source and positioning
Polar HD 1500 1,500 lb 22 cu. ft. Polyethylene bed, steel frame Yes 12 in. ground clearance; 18 x 8.5 in. tires Retailer listing (Northern Tool) describes it for hauling wood. Manufacturer guidance says the tandem Walking Arm version is the firewood option for wooded terrain, and the single-axle version has the same stated capacity at lower weight for flat, clear routes.
Polar HD 1200 1,200 lb 15 cu. ft. Not stated Not stated Not stated Retailer listing (Northern Tool). Five-year limited warranty. A side-rail extension kit is listed for the Series 1200.
Ohio Steel FB-ATV 1,000 lb Not stated (flatbed, 34 x 48 in. expanded-metal deck) Expanded-metal flatbed Tilt-to-dump 18 in. wheels; 1 in. axle Manufacturer page (Ohio Steel Industries). Stake pockets accept user-built side panels, which are not included.
Strongway Steel ATV Trailer 1,200 lb 18 cu. ft. Steel Not stated Not stated Retailer listing (Northern Tool). Confirm current availability and hitch interface before buying.

Polar HD 1500

This is the highest-capacity model in the group, with the largest stated bed volume at 22 cubic feet. The polyethylene bed and dump function suit a wood-hauling job that ends with unloading at a pile. The 12-inch ground clearance and 18 by 8.5-inch tires are the most rugged specification here. The choice between single-axle and tandem versions matters: the manufacturer positions the tandem Walking Arm version for wooded ground, and the single-axle version for flat, clear routes.

Polar HD 1200

The HD 1200 is the lighter-duty option at 1,200 lb and 15 cubic feet. Its five-year limited warranty is the longest coverage stated in this group, and the side-rail extension kit gives you a way to add volume for lighter, bulky loads. Frame, bed and wheel details are not stated in the listing, so check those with the seller before assuming they match the HD 1500.

VEVOR Heavy Duty ATV Trailer Steel Dump Cart Tow Behind, 750 lbs 12 Cubic Feet, Garden Utility Trailer Yard Trailers with Removable Sides for Riding Lawn Mower Tractor
  • Convenient Universal Connection: Embrace the effortless compatibility of our tow behind dump cart. No need for special tools - just connect the cart to your existing tractors, lawnmowers, ATV, UTV, and more. Turn your yard hauling work into a breeze.
  • Efficient Hauling Assistant: Unlike most dump trailers, this metal trailer can carry up to 750 pounds of items. The thickness of the side plates is increased to 0.04", and the side reinforcement is doubly secured. This improves the overall load-bearing capacity while effectively preventing deformation.
  • High Capacity Trailer: Our ATV dump cart has added railings on three sides and can hold 12 cubic feet of yard waste.
  • Exceptional Comfort and Durability: The 16" x 4" pneumatic tires provide excellent shock absorption, ensuring easy maneuverability over rough terrains. The frame has been reinforced with an additional coating, making it more robust, rust-proof and durable for long-lasting outdoor use. Experience effortless hauling with our trailer - your ultimate yard work companion.

Ohio Steel FB-ATV

This is a flatbed rather than an enclosed bed, which suits long, bulky pieces and loads that would otherwise spill over a tub. The 1,000 lb rating is the lowest in this group, so it is a poor match for dense hardwood unless you keep loads light. The tilt-to-dump design and 18-inch wheels are the features to check against your terrain. Anything you add to hold a load upright will need to be bought and fitted separately.

Strongway Steel ATV Trailer

The Strongway offers 1,200 lb and 18 cubic feet in a steel build. The listing does not state a dump function, wheel size or ground clearance, so you cannot judge its suitability for rough wooded trails from the listing alone. Confirm those details, and the hitch interface, before you order.

Reference only: Ohio Steel 3460H-ATV

The Northern Tool listing for the Ohio Steel 3460H-ATV describes a steel cart rated at 1,500 lb with 20 cubic feet of bed, a removable tailgate and a dump lever, and it says the cart is suitable for firewood. The same listing states the item is no longer available. Use it to compare specifications, not as a purchase option.

Choosing the right size: a short procedure

  1. Open your ATV owner’s manual and note the total vehicle capacity, towing rating and vertical hitch limit for your exact model.
  2. Find the trailer’s empty weight on its spec sheet. If the sheet does not list it, weigh the trailer before loading.
  3. Subtract the trailer’s empty weight from the towing rating. What remains is the most wood you could pull, before counting total vehicle capacity, riders and gear.
  4. Estimate the weight of one full load of the wood you actually haul, using its species and moisture. Compare that weight with the trailer’s payload rating.
  5. Use the smaller of the two results. If the load would exceed either rating, reduce the load, not the safety margin.
  6. Check the route. Steep grades, rough ruts and long downhill runs push you toward the higher clearance, the tandem option or lighter loads.

Which model fits which job

  • Heavy, frequent wood runs on rough ground: the Polar HD 1500, in the tandem version if the trail is wooded and uneven.
  • Light runs on a gravel or flat route: the Polar HD 1200 or the single-axle HD 1500, which the manufacturer rates for flat, clear routes.
  • Long or bulky pieces and occasional loads: the Ohio Steel FB-ATV, with side panels you source separately.
  • Steel build at mid-range capacity: the Strongway, once current availability and hitch fit are confirmed.

Whichever model you choose, the ATV’s ratings set the ceiling. Stay under the lower of the trailer’s payload and your ATV’s towing and vertical hitch limits, and load with the same care you would use on any heavy-cargo job.

For wood hauling, pick the smallest trailer whose payload covers your heaviest realistic load, then confirm your ATV’s towing, hitch and braking limits. Bed size comes after that.

Before purchase, check current availability, price, warranty and the ATV hitch connection with the seller.

Safety checklist before the first load

  • Confirm total vehicle capacity, towing rating and vertical hitch limit in your ATV manual.
  • Check that the hitch, coupler and safety chain match the trailer’s connection.
  • Weigh or estimate the loaded trailer and its tongue weight before leaving.
  • Test the brakes at low speed on a clear, level surface.
  • Unload only on level, stable ground, never on an incline.
