The clearest factory-backed option is Subaru accessory SOA567C100, a Thule tent that Subaru’s 2025 U.S. accessories brochure designates for the Outback Wilderness only and requires the Thule Crossbar Set – Aero Extended. For other Outbacks, tent, rack, and vehicle ratings must all work together before you buy.
These five tents form a manufacturer-documented shortlist, not a hands-on test or a universal “best” ranking. Start with your Outback’s model year and trim, then confirm the roof-load limit, crossbar compatibility and spacing, and hatch, moonroof, and overhang clearance.
What rooftop tent fits a Subaru Outback?
Fit depends on the exact Outback year and trim, the crossbars or platform, and the tent’s mounting requirements. Subaru’s 2025 U.S. accessories brochure lists its Thule Roof Top Tent as accessory SOA567C100, marks it “Outback Wilderness only,” and requires the Thule Crossbar Set – Aero Extended. That restriction applies to this accessory in that brochure; it does not establish that every other Outback trim can or cannot carry a different tent. Subaru’s 2025 accessories brochure is the reference for that specific accessory and model year.
Before choosing a tent, check the ratings and fit instructions for your own vehicle and rack. Subaru’s 2025 Outback owner’s manual excerpt gives a moving roof-rail limit of 220 lb (100 kg), or the crossbar’s lower rating, for the edition it covers. Other years and trims may differ. The tent plus crossbars count toward the moving load, and the lowest applicable dynamic limit controls. Check the applicable Outback owner’s manual, along with the rack and tent instructions.

Five rooftop tents to compare for an Outback
The figures below are manufacturer-listed specifications, not comparative test results. A product appearing in a manufacturer’s Outback collection is a starting point for verification—not proof of fit on every year, trim, rack, or roof configuration.

Can I put a rooftop tent on my Outback?
Possibly, but the tent’s occupant capacity or product listing does not show that your moving vehicle roof and rack can carry it. Add the tent and crossbar or platform weights, then compare the total with the lowest applicable dynamic rating for the vehicle and rack. A tent’s own capacity is a separate constraint; it does not raise the vehicle or rack limit.

For the 2025 Outback manual edition cited here, Subaru sets a 220 lb (100 kg) maximum total roof-rail load while driving, or the crossbar’s lower rating. Subaru also gives a 700 lb (317 kg) stationary roof-rail figure, but only when the vehicle is parked on level ground, the load is evenly distributed, and crossbars and tent are tightly secured. What crossbars do I need for a rooftop tent on a Subaru Outback?
Use bars or a platform that the tent manufacturer approves, that fit your Outback, and whose ratings and installation meet the tent’s instructions. Bar spacing matters as well as load rating: iKamper lists a 22–39 in spacing range for the Skycamp 3.0 Mini, for example. That range is specific to that tent and should not be applied to other models.

iKamper’s July 15, 2026 Outback guide says factory fold-out crossbars are typically rated at 100 lb or less, depending on model year, and are not suitable for its tents; it recommends adequately rated aftermarket crossbars or a platform. This is iKamper’s guidance for its tents, not a blanket Subaru prohibition or approval for every tent brand. Read iKamper’s Outback rack guidance.
How to choose among the five
- Start with documented fit: If you have an Outback Wilderness and want the Subaru-listed Thule accessory, check the brochure’s required Aero Extended crossbars and installation directions. For any other setup, obtain confirmation for the exact year, trim, tent, and rack rather than relying on a broad “Outback compatible” label.
- Compare the complete moving load: Include both tent and rack weights, and use the lowest vehicle or rack dynamic rating. The published tent weights alone do not establish that a complete setup is within limits.
- Match sleeping area to your use: Compare the actual sleeping footprint, capacity claims, and packed dimensions. The Thule and Skycamp Mini have published sleeping-area figures above; for the others, consult the current product specifications before deciding whether the space suits your party.
- Check mounting geometry and clearance: Confirm crossbar spacing and hardware compatibility, then assess hatch operation, tent overhang, and moonroof clearance. iKamper notes that a moonroof may tilt but may not fully open with a rack and tent installed, and that full-size tents can overhang the Outback. Its guidance emphasizes rack strength and bar spacing over appearance.
- Compare practical features not established by the figures here: Check current setup and pack-down instructions, weather protection and season rating, price, warranty, and exact fitment with the manufacturer. The listed weights and capacities do not settle those trade-offs.
What if your Outback or rack does not meet the requirements?
Use a conventional ground tent rather than carrying a rooftop tent on a roof system that does not meet the applicable limits or fit instructions. It avoids adding a tent to the roof while driving. If you want a roof-mounted setup, first identify compatible crossbars or a platform and tent-specific hardware for your exact Outback; do not assume a rack upgrade alone resolves every vehicle or fit constraint.
