The Tufport Overlander is a hard-sided slide-in pickup camper with three interior layouts, built by Tufport Industries with layouts developed by Wasatch Overland. Its Ultra-Light version starts at 750 lb, but the interior is only 64.5 inches high—so its compact profile comes with a real comfort tradeoff for adults who want to stand upright. Whether it fits a Toyota Tacoma or another pickup depends on the truck’s exact bed, payload and axle ratings, plus the finished camper’s equipment and cargo.
What the Tufport Overlander is—and what it isn’t
The Overlander is a fixed-roof, hard-sided camper that slides into a pickup bed. Tufport describes its shell as one-piece composite fiberglass construction without wood, and lists R22 insulation, screened and tinted windows, interior dome lights, and seating that converts to a bed. The three layouts—Ultra-Light, Sea-to-Sky and Coast-to-Coast—differ in equipment and starting weight; they are not simply three names for the same setup. Tufport’s current product page describes the configurations.
Tufport says its construction avoids seams that can leak. That is a manufacturer construction and durability claim, not independent evidence of long-term leak resistance. The company lists a one-year warranty for the fiberglass body and hardware, while excluding interior finishings installed by Wasatch Overland; request the warranty terms for the specific build in writing.

Check fit and payload on the exact truck
Tufport lists the camper for mid-size pickups with a 6-foot bed and full-size pickups with a 6.5-foot bed. The current product page gives an interior width of 72 inches and interior height of 64.5 inches; the manufacturer’s 2025 brochure lists an exterior height of 67 inches and an Ultra-Light base weight of 750 lb. These specifications do not establish compatibility with every Tacoma or every truck configuration. Cab, bed, payload rating and axle limits vary, so match the camper to the actual vehicle rather than relying on the model name alone. Tufport’s 2025 brochure contains the brochure specifications.
- Confirm the bed and truck configuration. Check the exact cab and bed length against Tufport’s fit guidance, then confirm dimensions and mounting requirements with the manufacturer or installer.
- Calculate the loaded weight. Start with the quoted weight for the finished configuration, then account for people, water, food, luggage, tools and other cargo carried by the truck.
- Compare with the truck’s ratings. Use the specific vehicle’s payload and front and rear axle limits, not a generic Tacoma or pickup figure. Consider how the camper and cargo are distributed, and ask a qualified installer or dealer if you need help validating the load.
- Get the final build documented. Ask for the installed options and final weight, along with current price, delivery, installation and warranty details, before ordering.
Weigh the compact profile against everyday comfort
The interior height of 64.5 inches is the most consequential comfort constraint. Many adults will need to crouch inside rather than stand. The brochure’s 67-inch exterior height gives a sense of the low-profile design, but does not make the interior suitable for standing. If you expect to spend extended time inside during rain or cold weather, consider whether the seating, converted bed and limited headroom work for everyone who will travel.

Tufport describes “Vortex Generating Edges” as shaping airflow to extend attached laminar flow and improve fuel efficiency. That is the manufacturer’s explanation of the design intent; the cited product materials do not provide a measured miles-per-gallon gain or a controlled comparison. Treat aerodynamic benefit as an unquantified claim, not a basis for predicting fuel savings.
Choose based on how you camp
- Favor the Ultra-Light if minimizing the starting camper weight is the priority and its basic equipment suits your needs. It starts at 750 lb before cargo and options.
- Compare Sea-to-Sky and Coast-to-Coast carefully if electrical equipment and refrigeration matter. Both start at 900 lb; the Sea-to-Sky page highlights an optional 45 L Dometic chest fridge/freezer, while the Coast-to-Coast lists an 86 L Indel B fridge.
- Test the day-and-night layout. Ask how the seating converts to a bed, what sleeping arrangement is included, and whether it suits the actual number of travelers. Confirm these details for the exact configuration rather than assuming every layout is interchangeable.
- Plan for the climate. Tufport lists R22 insulation and a Maxxair fan for the Ultra-Light, but those details alone do not establish comfort in every season. Ask what ventilation, electrical equipment and optional heating are available for the trips you have in mind.
