The recall concerns whether the side-curtain airbag system provides enough protection against ejection for third-row occupants; it does not mean every vehicle had an airbag deployment failure. Certain 2020–2025 Palisades are included, so owners should check their VIN and follow any safety instructions in their notice.
What the Hyundai Palisade recall covers
The U.S. recall is NHTSA campaign 26V034 and Hyundai manufacturer recall 292. Hyundai Motor America’s amended report, submitted May 4, 2026, lists 568,576 potentially involved vehicles. The 568,676 figure in the original headline is 100 higher than the official count. Hyundai estimated a 100% defect rate for the potentially involved population in its filing; that estimate is not evidence that every vehicle experienced an airbag failure or deployment problem.
The recall covers certain 2020–2025 Hyundai Palisades produced from April 10, 2019, through June 16, 2025, for sale in the United States. Model year alone cannot confirm whether a specific vehicle is included. The U.S. recall should not be assumed to apply identically in other countries.
What the airbag safety issue is
The issue concerns third-row ejection mitigation under Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 226. The standard sets a 100 mm limit for headform displacement in the relevant test. NHTSA testing of a 2025 Palisade found third-row headform displacement above that limit, and a November 5, 2025 retest was consistent with the initial result. Hyundai’s testing across multiple trim levels also exceeded the limit in certain instances.

Hyundai’s filing describes the potential cause as characteristics of the interior cabin design around the third-row outboard seating positions, including the quarter-panel window and adjacent headliner, that may not provide sufficient overall ejection-mitigation performance. This is a system-performance concern; the report does not say that the airbag failed to inflate or identify one component as the sole cause. It identifies Autoliv as the curtain-airbag supplier, which does not by itself establish sole responsibility.
The report says there is no warning that can occur. Hyundai’s stated risk is that a vehicle failing the standard might increase the chance of injury to third-row occupants in certain crashes, including a rollover.

How to check whether your Palisade is affected or repaired
- Find the full VIN. It is visible at the lower-left corner of the windshield and on vehicle registration documents; it may also appear on insurance documents.
- Check NHTSA’s VIN lookup. Enter the full VIN at NHTSA’s recall lookup to see whether the vehicle has an unrepaired recall.
- Contact a Hyundai dealer if the recall is open. Ask the dealer to confirm the vehicle’s status and arrange the recall repair.
- Follow instructions in any notice for your vehicle. The amended filing lists “Do Not Drive” and “Park Outside” advisories. Follow any interim safety instructions that apply to your vehicle.
NHTSA notes that newly announced recalls may not yet have all affected VINs identified in its lookup, and that recalls already repaired do not appear as open. If the lookup does not show an open recall but you have a notice or remain unsure, contact Hyundai or a dealer to confirm the vehicle-specific status.
What the official repair involves
Hyundai’s amended filing says technicians will install protective film on the rear quarter-panel window glass. On affected vehicles equipped with dual sunroofs, technicians will also remove certain foam padding from the headliner above the quarter-panel window. The repair is free, whether or not the vehicle remains under Hyundai’s new-vehicle warranty.

Use the manufacturer-specified dealer repair rather than generic aftermarket window film, a DIY installation, or a replacement airbag purchase. These are not substitutes for the recall remedy.

The initial U.S. filing said the remedy was still under development. Hyundai amended its report on May 1, 2026, with the final repair plan after remedy evaluation testing. The report gives May 29, 2026, as the planned date for phased owner notifications; that planned date does not establish that an individual owner received a letter or that a vehicle has been repaired.

Transport Canada recall 2026023 also lists 2020–2025 Hyundai Palisades and describes the third-row side-curtain airbag concern. Its page, last updated January 29, 2026, said corrective actions were under development at that time. Canadian owners should check current Transport Canada recall information and Hyundai Canada instructions rather than assuming the U.S. repair details apply.

How the U.S. recall developed
- April–November 2025: NHTSA informed Hyundai of the compliance-test result; the parties conducted inspections, assessments, engineering review, and a retest.
- December 2025–January 2026: Hyundai tested multiple trims and shared results and supplier analysis with NHTSA.
- January 14, 2026: Hyundai’s North America Safety Decision Authority concluded that the condition warranted a U.S. noncompliance recall.
- May 1, 2026: Hyundai amended the report with repair details.
