For most buyers comparing the 2026 U.S.-market bikes, the Triumph Trident 800 is the value and equipment winner; the Yamaha XSR900 is the choice for riders who specifically want Yamaha’s CP3 triple character, racing-heritage design and larger connected display. Triumph lists the Trident 800 from $9,995, or $604 below Yamaha’s $10,599 starting MSRP before destination, tax and dealer charges. The Trident also brings adjustable Showa suspension, cruise control, lean-sensitive cornering aids and a quickshifter. The XSR counters with an 890cc engine, Yamaha Ride Control, a 5-inch navigation-capable TFT and its own distinctive chassis and styling.

Published seat heights are effectively identical, so inseam alone will not decide this comparison. Bar reach, seat shape, knee bend, low-speed balance, local dealer support and the way each triple delivers power should determine your final choice.

At a glance: Trident 800 or XSR900?

Both motorcycles occupy the middleweight retro-roadster space: upright ergonomics, 17-inch wheels, liquid-cooled three-cylinder engines and contemporary electronic safety systems wrapped in designs that reference earlier sporting motorcycles. Their priorities are different. Triumph emphasizes accessible pricing, suspension adjustability and a compact roadster package. Yamaha emphasizes the character of its CP3 engine, racing-inspired styling and a larger, more modern interface.

Price and value: is the XSR900 worth the extra $604?

Triumph’s lower entry price

Triumph lists the Trident 800 from $9,995 in the United States. Yamaha lists the XSR900 from $10,599 MSRP. The arithmetic difference is $604 in Yamaha’s favor before destination charges, freight, setup, sales tax, registration, accessories or dealer-installed items. Those charges are not standardized, so the out-the-door gap can be smaller or larger at a particular dealership.

The Trident’s lower price is not paired with a bare-bones equipment list. Its published specification includes adjustable front and rear damping, three riding modes, cornering-aware ABS and traction control, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity and a shift-assist system. If those features would otherwise require accessories or an upgrade, the Triumph’s value case becomes stronger.

What the Yamaha premium buys

The XSR900 asks for the higher starting price in exchange for a larger 890cc CP3-based package, Yamaha Ride Control and a 5-inch TFT that can provide navigation with the required applications. Yamaha also revised the rear suspension, handlebar shape, seat, switches and clutch lever for the current model year. Whether those changes justify $604 depends on how much you value the Yamaha engine’s delivery, the connected display and the XSR’s design rather than on displacement alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat either MSRP as a delivered price. Ask each local dealer for a written quote showing freight, preparation, documentation, tax, registration and any installed accessories. Insurance premiums and service labor can also outweigh a $604 purchase-price difference over several years.

Engine character and performance

Trident 800: a high-revving 798cc triple

Triumph’s media specification lists a 798cc liquid-cooled three-cylinder engine with a 13.2:1 compression ratio, a redline of 11,500 rpm, 115 PS at 10,750 rpm and 84 Nm of torque at 8,500 rpm. Those figures describe the engine’s published peak output, not a guarantee of acceleration in every gear or riding condition.

The inline-three layout is intended to sit between the immediacy of a twin and the smooth, top-end willingness associated with a four-cylinder engine. In the Trident, the stated peak torque arrives high in the rev range, so riders who enjoy building revs through a corner or using the upper half of the tachometer may find the specification appealing. The standard Triumph Shift Assist system is designed to reduce clutch use during acceleration and gear changes; its exact operation and any downshift behavior should be confirmed during a demonstration ride.

XSR900: Yamaha’s 890cc CP3 platform

The 2026 U.S. XSR900 uses an 890cc liquid-cooled DOHC inline-three with an 11.5:1 compression ratio and a six-speed transmission. Yamaha’s product material identifies the engine as its CP3 powerplant and emphasizes its character. The current U.S. specification information supplied for this comparison does not publish a horsepower or torque number, so it would be misleading to insert an older or different-market figure into a current U.S. comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For historical context only, Yamaha’s official 2022 release described an 888cc version at 120 PS and 93 Nm. That is not a current 2026 U.S. output claim: displacement, calibration, emissions equipment and market specifications can change. Use the current motorcycle’s published information or a dealer’s market-specific documentation when comparing dyno-level performance.

How to choose between the triples

  • Choose the Trident if you want a clearly documented 115-PS output, a compact roadster brief and electronic features that support commuting as well as spirited riding.
  • Choose the XSR if the CP3 name and feel, the larger displacement and Yamaha’s racing-heritage presentation are central to the purchase rather than secondary details.
  • Do not decide from peak numbers alone. Ride both at low rpm, in the middle of the rev range and near the upper part of the tachometer, then compare throttle response, vibration, shift effort and how easy each bike is to place on a winding road.

Weight, seat height and everyday ergonomics

Published dimension Trident 800 XSR900
Wet weight 198 kg 425 lb
Seat height 810 mm 31.9 in
Wheelbase 1,402 mm 58.9 in
Fuel tank 14 litres 3.7 U.S. gallons
Published fuel economy Not stated in the supplied Trident specifications 49 mpg estimated

The seat-height figures are effectively the same when converted into a common unit. A rider who can manage one should not assume the other will feel identical, however: seat width, suspension sag, tank shape and the distance to the bars change how far your feet reach and how your knees bend.

Triumph publishes a 1,402mm wheelbase, while Yamaha publishes 58.9 inches. The different units and chassis layouts mean the number should be treated as a reference rather than a complete prediction of steering response. A shorter-feeling motorcycle can result from bar position, steering geometry and weight distribution as much as from wheelbase.

What to check before buying

  1. Put both bikes on their side stands and then lift them upright yourself. Note how high the center of mass feels and whether either bike pulls away from you at the end of the lift.
  2. Sit in your normal riding position with both hands on the bars. Check whether your wrists are bent, whether your elbows retain a slight bend and whether your knees contact the tank naturally.
  3. With the motorcycle stationary, move from the balls of your feet to one-foot support. This is more realistic than insisting on a flat-foot stance and reveals whether the seat edges interfere with reach.
  4. At walking pace, make several tight turns and U-turns. Compare steering effort, clutch feel, throttle smoothness and your confidence catching the bike if it leans farther than expected.
  5. Repeat the ride after at least 20 minutes. Initial impressions often hide pressure points in the seat or an awkward reach to the bars.

Suspension, brakes and tires

Adjustability

The Trident 800 uses a 41mm Showa SFF-BP fork with compression and rebound adjustment. Its Showa rear shock adds preload and rebound adjustment. This gives an owner more scope to set the bike for rider weight, luggage or a faster pace than a non-adjustable package would provide, provided the settings are changed methodically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The XSR900’s 41mm inverted fork is adjustable for preload, compression and rebound, and its rear shock offers preload and rebound adjustment. On paper, both motorcycles therefore provide meaningful chassis tuning at both ends. Adjustment ranges, spring rates, recommended baseline clicks and the work needed to access each adjuster are not stated in the supplied specifications; ask the dealer to demonstrate the standard settings before taking delivery.

Brake hardware

Triumph lists twin 310mm front discs with four-piston radial calipers. Yamaha lists dual 298mm front discs, a 245mm rear disc and ABS. Disc diameter and caliper layout are useful hardware descriptions, but they do not predict stopping distance by themselves. Tire compound, pad material, fork setup, rider input and the intervention strategy of the ABS all matter.

During a test ride, perform several progressively harder stops in a safe, clean area. Pay attention to initial bite, lever effort, feedback as the fork compresses and how naturally the rear brake can be used at low speed. Never disable or defeat a safety system on public roads to make a comparison.

Standard tire fitment and replacement

Triumph specifies Michelin Road 6 tires in 120/70 R17 front and 180/55 R17 rear sizes. Yamaha specifies Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport S22 tires in 120/70ZR17 front and 180/55ZR17 rear sizes. The nominal dimensions are the same, but the construction and speed-rating notation differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When replacing either tire, match the motorcycle’s required load and speed ratings, not just the width and rim diameter. Confirm the exact model-year fitment, rotation direction and approved pressure in the owner’s manual. A tire with the same numerical size can still be unsuitable if its rating or construction is wrong. Replacement prices, local availability and tread life vary by supplier and riding conditions, so they should be treated as ownership variables rather than fixed costs in this comparison.

Electronics and connected features

Trident 800 rider aids

Triumph lists lean-sensitive Optimised Cornering ABS and traction control, which use the motorcycle’s attitude to tailor intervention while the bike is cornering. The Trident also offers three rider modes: Rain, Road and Sport. The modes alter the motorcycle’s response and electronic behavior, although the exact parameter changes should be confirmed in the owner’s manual.

Triumph Shift Assist, Bluetooth connectivity and cruise control are included in the published equipment. Cruise control is especially relevant to riders who combine weekend roads with long highway links. Bluetooth can reduce the need for a separate accessory display or headset controller, but compatibility with a particular phone, headset or navigation application should be checked before purchase.

The instrument arrangement is a round 3.5-inch color TFT/LCD unit. It is smaller than Yamaha’s display but preserves the compact, traditional roadster presentation. Riders who prefer a simple circular cluster may find it less visually dominant; riders who want a broad map view may prefer Yamaha’s larger screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

XSR900 connected equipment

Yamaha’s current model-year equipment includes Yamaha Ride Control and a 5-inch TFT capable of navigation when used with the required applications. The display gives Yamaha more physical screen area for menus and mapping than the Trident’s 3.5-inch arrangement. “Capable of navigation” does not mean every navigation function works without a phone, app setup or compatible headset, so establish the required installation and subscription conditions before relying on it for touring.

The 13 March 2025 Yamaha release also identifies a revised rear suspension, optimized handlebar shape, revised seat, new switches and an adjustable clutch lever. These are touch points you can evaluate directly: check whether the switchgear is reachable without releasing your grip, whether the clutch lever can be set for your hand size and whether the revised seat supports your pelvis without forcing you toward the tank.

Styling and riding position

Why the Triumph suits a compact roadster brief

Triumph positions the Trident 800 as a compact middleweight roadster. Its 810mm seat, 17-inch wheels and round instrument arrangement support a conventional upright motorcycle profile. The equipment list is unusually broad for a bike at the lower listed price, so it suits a rider who wants modern assistance without moving to a large, touring-oriented machine.

Compact does not automatically mean cramped. Check the actual relationship between the seat, footpegs and handlebar with your riding gear on. A rider with a long torso may care more about bar reach than seat height, while a shorter rider may be affected by the seat’s width at the front edge.

Why the Yamaha suits a heritage-focused buyer

Yamaha describes the XSR900’s design as racing-heritage inspired. Its 890cc engine, 5-inch TFT and Yamaha Ride Control combine a modern electronic core with styling intended to recall Yamaha’s sporting history. The result is a motorcycle for buyers who want the visual identity to be part of the purchase decision, not merely a neutral wrapper around the engine.

Styling is subjective, so compare the details that affect use rather than judging photographs alone. Sit on each bike in the jacket and boots you normally wear, check mirror coverage, operate the indicators and horn, and inspect whether the seat lets you move fore and aft. A beautiful motorcycle that leaves you tense after half an hour is a poor match.

Fuel range and practical ownership

Tank capacity and economy

The Trident’s listed tank capacity is 14 litres. The XSR900’s U.S. specification lists a 3.7-gallon tank and an estimated 49 mpg. Yamaha’s estimate is a test-cycle figure, not a promise for every rider; speed, temperature, payload, tire pressure and throttle use change actual range. The supplied Trident data does not state an equivalent fuel-economy estimate, so a direct range calculation would be speculative.

For commuting, compare how often you can refuel on your normal route rather than relying only on tank volume. For touring, plan stops around the lower expected range of either motorcycle until you have established your own consumption over several tanks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dealer and service support

Dealer coverage, technician experience, labor rates, appointment delays and parts availability are local variables. Neither model should be selected on a generalized assumption that one manufacturer is better supported everywhere. Call the dealers you would actually use and ask about the nearest authorized workshop, routine-service pricing, lead time for common parts and whether a demonstrator is available.

Ask for the maintenance schedule and warranty terms for your country before signing. Service intervals and consumable prices were not provided for this comparison, so they should not be guessed from another model year or market.

Which motorcycle should you buy?

Your priority Better fit Reason
Lowest listed U.S. entry price Trident 800 $9,995 versus Yamaha’s $10,599 starting MSRP
Adjustable suspension at both ends Either, with a setup check Both list adjustable front and rear suspension; the Triumph specifies Showa SFF-BP hardware
Cruise control and cornering-aware aids Trident 800 Both cruise control and lean-sensitive cornering ABS and traction control are listed
Largest connected display XSR900 5-inch TFT with navigation capability using the required apps
Distinctive CP3 identity and racing-heritage design XSR900 Yamaha explicitly centers the CP3 engine and racing-inspired styling
Published seat-height advantage Neither 810mm and 31.9in are effectively the same
Simple tire replacement planning Neither Both use common 17-inch sport-roadster sizes, but brands, constructions and ratings differ

Choose the Triumph Trident 800 when…

  • You want the lower listed U.S. price and would rather spend the difference on protective equipment, luggage or setup work.
  • Cruise control, cornering-sensitive ABS and traction control are important to your commute or touring plans.
  • You intend to tune suspension for your weight, passengers or changing road conditions.
  • You prefer a compact roadster presentation and do not need a 5-inch navigation display.

Choose the Yamaha XSR900 when…

  • The CP3 engine’s character and Yamaha’s racing-heritage styling are the main reasons you are shopping this class.
  • You value Yamaha Ride Control and a larger TFT with navigation capability.
  • The revised seat, handlebar, switchgear and clutch-lever adjustment fit your hands and posture better in person.
  • You are comfortable paying the $604 higher listed starting price before local fees for those priorities.

A test-ride checklist for the final decision

  1. Confirm the exact motorcycles. Make sure the dealer is showing the same model year and market specification discussed here. Equipment, prices and availability can change by country.
  2. Set the controls. Adjust the clutch lever, mirrors and any available suspension settings to a documented baseline. Do not compare one motorcycle in a dealer’s custom setup with the other in its factory setting.
  3. Test low-speed control. Ride through a parking area, make tight turns and stop with one foot. Note throttle smoothness, clutch engagement, steering lock and perceived weight.
  4. Test the engine in stages. Use gentle throttle in a high gear, then accelerate through the middle and upper rev range. Compare response and vibration without treating one short burst as a complete performance test.
  5. Test the brakes progressively. Use repeated moderate stops, then one firm stop where conditions permit. Evaluate feel and control rather than trying to trigger ABS.
  6. Check the electronics. Cycle the Trident’s Rain, Road and Sport modes and inspect its Bluetooth and cruise-control controls. On the Yamaha, review Yamaha Ride Control menus and determine exactly what phone, application and headset setup the navigation function requires.
  7. Repeat with your equipment. Wear your normal helmet, jacket and boots if possible. Check wind pressure, knee contact, seat comfort and the ability to move around on the motorcycle.
  8. Get local written numbers. Obtain an out-the-door quote, insurance estimate, expected service labor rate and tire replacement price from the dealer you would use.

Bottom line

The Triumph Trident 800 is the stronger all-round value: it costs $604 less at the listed U.S. starting prices, publishes 115 PS and 84 Nm from its 798cc triple, and includes adjustable Showa suspension, cruise control, lean-sensitive ABS and traction control, three ride modes, Bluetooth and shift assist. The Yamaha XSR900 earns its higher price when its 890cc CP3 character, racing-heritage styling, Yamaha Ride Control and 5-inch connected TFT matter more than the savings.

Because the published seat heights are essentially equal, do not choose between them by inseam alone. Ride both, verify dealer support and fees in your area, and select the motorcycle whose controls, engine response and riding position still feel right after the novelty of the styling has worn off.
