The Kawasaki Z650RS is the only lower-priced alternative in this comparison with a currently verified US manufacturer price and specification. Kawasaki lists the 2026 Z650RS ABS at a base MSRP of $8,999, while Triumph lists the Speed Twin 900 from $11,495 on its US product page. That is a $2,496 difference before destination charges, options, taxes, title, registration or dealer fees. Yamaha XSR700 and Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 are sensible names to investigate, but their current prices and specifications are not verified here, so they should not be treated as confirmed like-for-like choices.
This guide separates published MSRP from out-the-door cost, explains what each verified bike offers, and gives you a process for checking fit, equipment and ownership support in your market. The specifications and prices below are manufacturer-published figures, not independent test results.

At a glance: the verified choices
Both motorcycles are middleweight, retro-styled roadsters with parallel-twin engines, but they occupy different price positions. The Triumph is the more expensive starting point and publishes more detailed chassis, braking and ownership information on its US page. The Kawasaki is the lower-cost entry and has a smaller-displacement engine, three-mode traction control and a deliberately compact retro format.

What makes the Speed Twin 900 the baseline?
Triumph’s Speed Twin 900 combines a 900 cc liquid-cooled parallel twin with a 270-degree crank layout. Triumph publishes 64 bhp at 7,500 rpm and 59 lb-ft of torque at 3,800 rpm. The torque peak arriving well below the horsepower peak is relevant to everyday riding: it tells you where Triumph measures maximum twisting force, not how the motorcycle will feel in every gear or at every speed. No independent acceleration, braking or fuel-economy results are established by the available product information.
Chassis and dimensions
The listed 780 mm seat height is a useful starting point for fit, but it cannot predict whether both feet will reach the ground. Seat width, suspension sag, rider inseam and the distance to the handlebar all change the effective reach. The Speed Twin 900 carries 12 L of fuel and has a published wet weight of 476.2 lb. Wet weight normally includes operating fluids and fuel according to a manufacturer’s stated method; compare weighing conventions before drawing conclusions against another brand.
Suspension hardware consists of a 43 mm Marzocchi inverted fork and twin rear units with preload adjustment. Preload adjustment can help compensate for a passenger or luggage load, but it is not the same as separate compression and rebound damping adjusters. Ask the dealer which adjustments are available on the exact motorcycle you are considering.

Braking, tires and electronics
Triumph lists a single 320 mm front disc paired with a radial four-piston caliper. The motorcycle also has cornering ABS and traction control, systems designed to account for lean angle rather than functioning only as basic straight-line interventions. Triumph specifies Michelin Road 5 tires on the product page. Tire sizes, compound options and original-equipment fitment can change by market or model year, so verify the sidewall specification on the delivered motorcycle.
Road and Rain riding modes alter the motorcycle’s electronic response for the conditions Triumph describes. Treat those labels as manufacturer positioning, not a promise that one mode makes a particular road safe. Traction control and ABS cannot overcome poor tires, excessive speed, standing water or limited visibility.
Ownership information and factory accessories
Triumph lists a two-year, unlimited-mileage warranty and scheduled service at 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first. Warranty duration, exclusions, roadside assistance and service pricing can vary by country, so obtain the written terms for your registration market.

Kawasaki lists the 2026 Z650RS ABS at a $8,999 base MSRP in the United States. Kawasaki explicitly says that figure excludes destination, options, taxes, title, license and dealer fees and charges, and that the dealer sets the actual retail price. It is therefore a credible lower-listed-price comparison, not an out-the-door quote.
Engine concept and everyday equipment
The Z650RS uses a 649 cc parallel-twin engine. The cited Kawasaki listing does not establish a horsepower figure, torque figure, gear count or fuel capacity, so those numbers should come from the current specification sheet for the motorcycle sold in your area rather than from an older review or a marketplace listing.
Kawasaki identifies KTRC traction control with three modes, an assist-and-slipper clutch, dual-dial instruments with a multifunction LCD and a round LED headlight. The assist function can reduce clutch lever effort, while a slipper mechanism is intended to manage rear-wheel hop during aggressive downshifts; neither description is an independent performance test. Kawasaki also describes the riding position as relaxed and the motorcycle as compact and approachable. Those are manufacturer descriptions that still need to be checked against your body dimensions and preferences.
What the lower MSRP does and does not tell you
The $2,496 gap is large enough to affect a financed payment, insurance valuation or accessory budget, but it is not your final cost. A dealer may add destination, setup, documentation, freight, registration and local taxes. Options can erase part of the difference, while incentives can change it. Request an itemized quote for both motorcycles on the same day and compare the total amount due, not only the advertised number.

| Budget question | Speed Twin 900 | Z650RS |
|---|---|---|
| Published starting or base price | $11,495 US starting price | $8,999 US base MSRP for the 2026 ABS model |
| Included fees | The cited Triumph page does not establish an all-in price | Kawasaki says destination, options, taxes, title, license and dealer fees are excluded |
| Factory comfort or luggage additions | Low seat, heated-grip compatibility, flyscreen, panniers, tank bag and other listed accessories; prices not stated | Accessory prices not stated in the cited listing |
| Best use of the price difference | More room may be needed for tax, equipment or touring accessories when starting from the higher MSRP | The lower listed price may leave budget for riding gear, insurance or accessories, subject to the dealer quote |
Do not compare a discounted advertised motorcycle with a full-price competitor unless both quotes identify the same incentives, destination charge, preparation fee and tax treatment. A “from” price can also refer to a specific color, trim or stock configuration.
Engine character: how to compare without a test ride report
Peak figures are useful for context but incomplete as a buying tool. The Triumph’s published 59 lb-ft at 3,800 rpm indicates where its maximum torque is measured; its 64 bhp figure is measured at 7,500 rpm. The Kawasaki listing confirms a 649 cc twin but does not provide comparable output figures in the cited material. You should therefore avoid declaring one motorcycle faster, stronger or smoother based on displacement alone.
Ask the dealer for a permitted ride or, if a ride is unavailable, inspect the controls and service documentation. Pay attention to clutch reach, throttle rotation, neutral selection, mirror visibility and whether the footpeg position suits your hips and knees. A larger engine does not automatically make a motorcycle easier in traffic, and a smaller engine does not automatically make it cheaper to insure or maintain.

Seat height is only one dimension. Before signing:
- Wear the boots and riding clothing you will actually use.
- Stand the motorcycle upright and check whether you can place at least one foot securely without leaning excessively.
- Turn the bars fully left and right to see whether your knees, wrists or tank contact feel awkward.
- Check reach to the clutch, brake and switchgear with both elbows relaxed.
- Ask to sit with a passenger if two-up riding is part of your plan.
- Have the dealer demonstrate the low-seat option if considering the Speed Twin accessory; Triumph says it reduces seat height by 20 mm, but the resulting shape and reach still need an in-person check.
Suspension setup changes with rider weight and luggage. On the Triumph, rear preload adjustment is listed; ask the technician to record the delivered setting and explain how to change it for a passenger or bags.
Safety and equipment comparison
Both motorcycles identify electronic traction-control equipment, but the systems are not described in identical terms. Triumph lists cornering ABS, traction control and Road/Rain modes. Kawasaki lists KTRC with three modes and an ABS model designation. Ask whether the exact regional motorcycle has switchable intervention, what the modes change, and whether any feature is disabled when accessories or tire sizes change.
Hardware matters as well as electronics. Triumph publishes the 320 mm single front disc and radial four-piston caliper, 43 mm inverted fork and preload-adjustable twin shocks. The cited Kawasaki page confirms disc brakes but does not state rotor dimensions, caliper configuration or suspension adjustability. Obtain those details from Kawasaki’s current technical sheet before making a hardware-based decision.

Ownership: warranty, servicing and dealer support
The Speed Twin 900’s published service interval is 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first, with a two-year unlimited-mileage warranty. That schedule does not tell you the cost of each visit. Request the maintenance chart, labor rate, consumables list and valve-check interval from a Triumph dealer.
The cited Z650RS listing does not establish warranty duration or service intervals. Ask a Kawasaki dealer for the written warranty booklet and maintenance schedule for the 2026 US ABS model, then compare:
- Time and mileage limits for scheduled service.
- Valve-inspection and fluid-replacement intervals.
- Labor rates and whether the first service has a fixed price.
- Parts availability and typical order times in your area.
- Warranty requirements for dealer-performed maintenance and approved fluids.
- Roadside assistance, storage charges and claims procedures.
Dealer proximity can outweigh a modest MSRP difference if the motorcycle is your daily transportation. Count the round-trip distance to an authorized workshop and ask how quickly routine appointments are available during riding season.

Urban commuting
The Kawasaki’s compact positioning, assist-and-slipper clutch and three-mode traction control may appeal if you prioritize a lower entry price and frequent stop-and-go riding. Confirm the actual curb or wet weight, bar width and low-speed balance at the dealership because the cited listing does not provide all of those measurements.
Relaxed back-road riding
The Triumph supplies a published 270-degree twin layout, a low torque peak, Road and Rain modes, and a 43 mm inverted fork. Those are specification and equipment distinctions, not proof of superior cornering. Choose only after checking whether the seating position, throttle response and suspension range suit your roads.
Touring and luggage
Triumph explicitly lists panniers and a tank bag among its accessory options, along with a flyscreen and heated-grip compatibility. That makes a factory-supported luggage path clear, although prices and fitment are not stated. Kawasaki accessory luggage and wind protection are not established in the cited listing; obtain a model-specific catalog and check whether mounting hardware affects passenger comfort or warranty terms.

Passenger use
Neither cited page provides passenger payload, seat dimensions or a tested two-up assessment. Ask for the gross vehicle weight rating, maximum axle loads and accessory rack limits. Set rear preload for the combined rider, passenger and luggage mass, and verify that the passenger footpeg position is comfortable before purchase.
Yamaha XSR700 and Royal Enfield Interceptor 650: leads, not verified entries
A dealer comparison page names the Yamaha XSR700 and Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 as alternatives. Its indicative figures were not independently checked against current primary manufacturer pages for the same market and model year. Do not use those figures to rank the bikes or to calculate savings.
If either model interests you, obtain a current official specification sheet and local price first. Verify engine output, seat height, wet weight, fuel capacity, ABS configuration, warranty, service schedule and destination charges. Model-year changes and regional equipment can make an older dealer article materially different from the motorcycle on a showroom floor.
How to get an apples-to-apples dealer quote
- Choose the same market and, where possible, the same model year for both motorcycles.
- Ask each dealer for a written worksheet showing MSRP, destination or freight, setup, documentation, accessories, taxes, title, registration and every other charge.
- Identify rebates, finance incentives and expiration dates separately from the vehicle price.
- Specify the exact trim, ABS version, color and included equipment.
- Request accessory fitment and installed labor as separate line items.
- Compare the final amount due and the financed total, not only the monthly payment.
- Confirm the warranty booklet, maintenance schedule and delivery date before placing a deposit.
For the two published US prices, the arithmetic is straightforward: $11,495 minus $8,999 equals $2,496. That calculation is not a market-wide transaction statistic; local inventory and dealer pricing can make the actual difference smaller or larger.
Pre-purchase checklist
- Confirm the model year and regional specification on the VIN or build sheet.
- Check the seat height and reach while wearing riding boots.
- Inspect tire dates, pressures and the delivered tire model.
- Verify ABS and traction-control operation during the handover briefing.
- Get written warranty and service terms, including the first scheduled service.
- Price insurance using the exact trim and your address.
- Budget for helmet, protective jacket, gloves, boots and weather gear separately from the motorcycle.
- Ask whether accessories are factory-approved, dealer-installed or supplied by a third party.
- Read the cancellation, deposit and delivery clauses before signing.
Bottom line
If your priority is the lowest verified US entry price among these two, the 2026 Kawasaki Z650RS ABS starts $2,496 below the Triumph Speed Twin 900 before fees and taxes. If you value the Triumph’s published 900 cc 270-degree engine specification, cornering ABS, Road and Rain modes, adjustable rear preload and clearly listed touring accessories, its higher $11,495 starting price may fit your priorities. Neither price is an out-the-door guarantee, and the Yamaha XSR700 and Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 require fresh manufacturer verification before they can be compared responsibly.
