Sprint-car driver Trent Pigdon said he was temporarily unable to see after his car struck the fence at Perth Motorplex on February 19, 2022. In an interview published four days later, he described the collision, his injuries as he understood them, and the help he received while waiting for his vision to return.
What happened in the crash?
Pigdon was competing in the Alf Barbagallo Mr Sprintcar 77 event on Saturday night, February 19, 2022. He told PerthNow that he was racing down the back straight alongside Callum Williamson and Jason Kendrick when Kendrick moved up. Pigdon said his car contacted Kendrick’s right rear and went into the fence.
Pigdon estimated that his car hit the fence at about 180 km/h. That was his estimate in the interview, not a measured speed or an official crash finding. His account does not establish fault, and the report does not provide an independent technical investigation of the collision.
What did Pigdon remember immediately afterward?
Pigdon said that after getting out of the car he could not see. He told Ben Smith of PerthNow: “I got out of the car and I was blind. I couldn’t see anything for about half an hour afterwards from the hit and my eyes were bloodshot, I had blood in my eyes,”

Several days later, he said his vision remained blurred. He reported that he had been told it should come back, but PerthNow’s account does not include medical records or an independent assessment of his eyesight.
What injuries did he report?
In the interview, Pigdon described bruising on his brain, a cracked scapula and a dislocated shoulder that had been put back in. He said: “I’ve got bruising on the brain, cracked scapula and dislocated my shoulder but they said they put that back in. It’s blurred my vision, but they say that should come back.” These are details from his account to PerthNow, not independently documented medical findings in the report.

Who helped him at the track?
Pigdon credited Perth Motorplex first responders and the ambulance crew with comforting him while he could not see. He recalled: “They were very comforting and trying to make it as easy as they could for me. It’s a bit of a scary deal when you can’t see, you don’t really know what to think,” The report says he was reunited with his family at hospital that night.

Pigdon said he wanted to return as soon as possible. He also said he had been told to expect a six-week recovery timeframe, while speculating that he might manage an earlier return: “They reckon six weeks, but I don’t know, I reckon we’ll see how we go. I’ll put a fair bit of effort in to make it happen a little bit earlier.” That was his expectation at the time, not confirmation of how long recovery took. The interview does not establish when he returned to racing.
