A fire-damaged vehicle blocked the northbound Tonkin Highway in Martin between Albany Highway and Mills Road East on the morning of 4 September 2024. Police diverted heavy traffic, and Main Roads WA advised motorists to take an alternate route. The vehicle had been removed by the time the report was published, but traffic was still slow on approach.
Where the Tonkin Highway fire happened
The incident was reported on the northbound Tonkin Highway in Martin, on the section between Albany Highway and Mills Road East. A fire-damaged vehicle was blocking the highway.
What happened to traffic
Police diverted heavy traffic, while Main Roads WA advised motorists to seek an alternate route. By publication time, the vehicle had been removed, but traffic remained slow on approach. The obstruction was cleared; the report did not say that traffic had returned to normal.
What is known about the vehicle and fire
The PerthNow report, published at 7:59am AWST on 4 September 2024, does not identify the vehicle’s make, model or fuel type, or establish what caused the fire. It also provides no information confirming whether anyone was injured. Those details should not be inferred from the description of the incident.

Separate crash on Kwinana Freeway
The same report also noted a separate crash on the southbound Kwinana Freeway near Manning Road in Salter Point. That crash had been cleared and traffic was flowing; the vehicles were in the left emergency lane and towing services removed them. It was distinct from the Tonkin Highway vehicle fire.
